2017 Poetry Form Challenge#10 Sonnetina Due |
This form is using the most basic form of poetry, the couplet. Many versions come to mind, the Mathnawi,
Ghazal, Cyhydedd Fer, Rhupunt, and Toddaid, it is possible to construct a Sonnetina Due using these existing
couplet forms. The emphasis is that it is a ten line poetry form that is constructed using any couplet form, and must be presented as a ten line poetry form. There is no set meter or rhyme sceme, but if Iambic Pentameter were used, the form could be called an "Heroic Sonnetina".

Maryse AchongI sit alone and let my thoughts run wild, I am a girl again, a happy child; I am a teen, convinced I know it all, A young woman caught up in love's first thrall. Life's ups and downs assail me still I stand, Though there are times I am on shifting sand. The years have flown, that girl has gone away, The woman I became is here today. I know not what the future holds for me But in His hands I place it willingly. ----- My Good Shepherd The Shepherd tends each member of his fold, He warms them if they become lost, are cold. He calls to each and every one by name The old, infirm, the young, the strong, the lame. He leads them to green pastures, there to feed, And gives them rest and comfort when in need. With crook and staff he keeps danger away, And searches for each lamb that's gone astray. My Good Shepherd is real, no fantasy... I know, for He's been taking care of me. |
Kathy AndersonThe skies are full of bovines Black and white or brown so fine, Owls found the wind is greener The land shining redder Since cows passed by in a herd Of dark black Angus that stirred A storm of coal raining down To mix upon this owl town Who were want to tar-feather Any trespassers in leather. ![]() ----- A Beautiful Life Into its warren dark and soft Cotton tail down no need to keep aloft Brown eyed doe nests safely with young, Green glade door no predator has yet sprung Under canopy of beautiful leaves Each animal may there sigh with no heaves, Quietly dozing or preening its hair None could find better a niche from despair Below the moon fair and fully glowing True loveliness reflected from suns shining. ![]() A Beautiful Life - Vladimir Kush ----- Blue Visions Through blue color glasses worlds implode What was sunny bright becomes a black road Into violet dusk of night and grey clouds Covering up the means, sunlight enshrouds. All that's gay and cheery swallowed by gloom Midnight's come a calling to seek your doom, Instead of hearts home you play to dead beats Following the storms sky drips bloody sheets, Torn apart lovers never discover Peaceful dawns rosy merely blew over. ----- Bright Blue It was no accident I saw right blue stars Somewhere in southern skies, Homeward bound a heart you'd hold Could claim the same dreams Dare to hope that hope will stay. It was no accident bright blue stars I saw within clouds in your bright gaze, These days would pass from grey To bright blue azure above green waves Great swells washing away fears instead. ![]() Bright Blue - Vladimir Kush ----- Claustrophobic I cannot breath in the cleanest of air For every one is measured lest we dare Take more than our share of opiate dreams Or perhaps it's that they're governed by reams, The stacks that have all gone cyber storage On data discs and who knows how much wage Those nerds in D.C. receive to make it All up and pass the next law to befit This bogus land of freedom is no more Than a new hell, religion may count score. ----- Maid of Poetry And it was at that age ~ poetry arrived To sit upon my shoulders, bare of words Whose letters became like gods own third eye With an eye never to forget stressed chi, Syllable for syllable music made Into wine mulled a thousand years prevade Era after era in pure decades thoughts, My thoughts the reflection of Goddess Born for the first time into Zeus's arms, His strength being the gift to souls charms. ![]() ----- Stages Paint me a field of poppies in the hour Of my awakening to deaths power, The power of life clinging memories A token of the past, preserved fresco's Taken down with time whose colors I lost The lost reconstructed in thoughts embossed Like the fabric of a thousand more lives Relived in imagination that gives Credence to old ages yellow'd pages; Even roses live on in new stages. ![]() Daisey Games - Vladimir Kush back to list |
Terry ClitheroeSilent tears fall down my face There is no one to understand my place. It's a place of solitude with so much around. Yet no-one would know just by the sound? The beings there all lie sentient now Uncared for, ignored, yet alive somehow. Yes! Aware and alive and still with form For what is memory but a previous norm? Opening my toybox after all this time I see memories covered in dust and grime. Those within saw my look and my shame, They knew of my life, I was not to blame. I spoke with, Kanga, Wambi and Owly again, Sat down with my friends, there was no strain. So we sat and talked all through the night By the following morn everything was right ![]() ----- As Rain Descends As rain descends from a sombre cloud Hear it falling like an angry crowd And from the grey morning as we arise In a shower that caught us by surprise. Half light now lights a land once proud As rain descends from a sombre cloud. Meanwhile birds sit quietly in their nests Mother hens clutching chicks to their breasts A strong wind picks up the grey shroud As rain descends from a sombre cloud. ----- Autobahn Thoughts Shaded trails of asphalt filled promise And I saw how those promises diminish Like the red cars that pass, I am in the way And my marvellous thoughts easily decay. Flashing bands of what has mattered By impatient, ill bred cretins in well catered Four wheeled drives impressed by might, With little though for others, or what is right. Ignoring they tried to push me out of the way But I pushed time in one end of today. Patiently I spur my horseless carriage on Wondering if this time, I will see the dawn Before I have to turn round and head on back Or attempt to get off, and take another tack. Suddenly I'm free and can move at my pace Brooding cameras prevent the thought of race. What heat there was is now a flowing breeze And the clear road ahead only serves to tease. None too soon, a leafy street comes into sight Then I am home finally for a quiet night. ![]() ----- Darkness Eyes open wide seeing nought but darkness Arms extend, grope out feeling emptiness. Feel safe, taste its power, savour what's black Harness what most people fear; nights attack. Gloom's often shunned; it's a creation to be used It is a place for loving, not for those confused Where all senses are heightened, but all are blind. Smell the air, gently touching, and you'll find There is a new quality to love as you ascend, As gradually the darkness becomes your friend. ![]() ----- Earthy Thoughts A falling star streaks above the Earth The trail behind it heralding its death. The scent so strong speaks of its decay And smells of all that winter takes away. The ending that started the beginning Is merely Fate sat at a wheel spinning A rising star awakes across the Earth A sight of wonder as the day gives birth. The scent of freshness and new born life Gives man hope for freedom from strife. ![]() Catch a Falling Star - Josephine Wall ----- Fairground The fairground that is life has many choices, And equally speaking out, so many voices. Do not laugh, do not sing, do not enjoy, Those miserable bastards are not Gods envoy. He says "Love thy neighbour, but not his wife" That's a sure way he recons of causing strife He says "Love thy neighbour, but not his Ass" I could say something, but I won't be crass. So on the fairground that is life, enjoy all you can. And equally avoid criticism by a religious man. ![]() ----- Fire of Love I am the smith and our love is the fire Kissing stirs the coals and makes the flames higher There are times when the heat becomes white hot What it heats is oft times placed in a tempering pot This often causes me to heavily perspire A love that always gives us all that we require Even when tamped there is still that warm glow That leaves a feeling others vainly seek to know What we have, others work hard at to aspire I am the smith and our love is the fire. ![]() Fiery Dance - Vladimir Kush ----- First Moon When she said "Love" the first time There was trembling in her words. I wished, "If only time came and went Spent forever with her in my arms. Looking at the beauty of the moon, Kissing for always those tasty lips. This peace and wonderment attained I feel connected through space and time. It is made all the more wondrous Because I'm sharing it with her. ![]() Astronomer - Vladimir Kush ----- Futility My insomniac dreams are hollow Like the unhappy winds that follow, And the day is spent in a morass, Of muddy minded students that pass Not on merit, but on exercise And reluctant drills on hardly wise. Where is that glimmer and lively spark That takes a student out of the dark Placing the engineering gal or gent Into the ranks of practical and intelligent. ![]() ----- I am the Wind I am the wind that whispers in the still of night, Changing to the winter gale that hastens flight. Making the rain dance softly against the window, Freezing the earth and turning rain into snow. Inducing horizontal ice arrows to nip and bite That in the shelter of home causes skin to shine. Gazing out you see the entity that is part of me, Know that his conceit is only what I permit to be. Living proof that man is subject to my will, And that in time, he will have to pay the bill. ![]() Spirit Flight - Josephine Wall ----- In Brimbank Park In Brimbank Park with its hues of green Its hills and trees are a perfect scene. On meeting we did not know that first time That love would grow to be so sublime. But as our love grew we did not mean To cause others pain, or to demean. We sat and talked on a bank of green Sadly knowing what should have been I touched your face, now no longer mine And then we parted that final time. ![]() ----- Kinaesthesia See how rivers dance as starlight twinkles Eve's wind gently waves the ranunculales And clouds like dreams fly across the sky Almost as if wishing the dying day goodbye. Nights creatures emerge smiling at the night And mother moon arises and spreads her light. Then is the time when creatures stop and stare They rule the heavens for all those who care. Seeing the moon and stars for what they do There lovers gaze and wish as one, not two. ![]() ----- Kisses Sweeter Than Wine She comes deliciously after wine See her in peace, see her divine. Laying there smiling in love I know And all her beauty in that afterglow I watch her sleep, see her content Knowing that to me she's meant. How brave to say that she is mine I know she is tastier than any wine. I am content to be part of her serenity And of the afterglow created by she. ![]() ----- Lei Viene Deliziosamente She comes deliciously after wine See her in peace, see her so divine. Laying there smiling in love I know And all her beauty in that afterglow I watch her sleep, see her content Knowing that to me she's meant. How brave to say that she is mine I know she is tastier than any wine. I am content to be part of her serenity And of the afterglow created by she. ![]() ----- New Mates If I tell you a secret will you tell me one, Two secrets shared alone under the sun? I promise not to tell, if you confide in me, Whisper in my ear, let it drift out to sea. Bare your heart and I'll bare my soul, Let me love you from within, make us whole. I'll sing you a song, I'll write you a sonnet We'll lie on my bed and make love upon it. Your head on my shoulder, true love will cling My lips on your lips as our bodies now sing. ![]() Centaur - Boris Vallejo ----- Nae One Believes A lad and a lassie fell in love at the fair Strangers at first, but in time, sae much maire. Och aye, and she was bonny and fair of face And he was handsome and his pulse did race. So they wed and bided in their house together She blossomed maire than flowers wi the heather. In time bore bairns blue of eye and red of hair But fate had controlled how they had met unaware. Misery was never a thing that they knew With the years all they touched happiness grew. No-one believes good things can happen Take time out, believe, leave your minds open. Happily, Jock and Jess would strongly deny And state strongly, misery is a corporate lie. He would lift his kilt and show his arse To think that such stupid beliefs could pass. But Jess, a lady with much more aplomb Would call gently over to her nearest son. With a smile designed to light up humanity You realise good things are what should be. ![]() ----- Olfactory Presence The dog's been walked as the evening draws nigh And I smell the sweet roses as I pass close by. I've stopped for a while to sniff in the view, There's Roses, Jacarandas and Lavender to. The front of the house is where the day began It was the first place to see and feel the sun. Long shadows now cover the front of my place As if it was now some kind of evening race. Darker and darker and now my garden's hid, But of the scent the night will never be rid. ![]() ----- Palestinian Truth The tears she sheds are more than any tide This new widow, who was a brand new bride. For what fate gives she sometimes takes away This young widowed lass, was a bride today. But some people do not think as free as we With some faiths believe mixing cannot be. So the innocent pledge to lover forever Made evil men state, "this can't happen EVER" So she sits there weeping on the beach Realising true love for now is out of reach. ----- Providence I wonder was man not created in the womb? See him emerging from the Stygian gloom. That is his birthplace here on Earth each time And the body is washed to remove the slime. In time the eyes open and the vision clears Beginning the time to rise and face all fears. What happened to lessons previously learned Why cannot they after the birth return? Is this the plan of what life is meant to be, I wonder is this what's meant by Destiny? ![]() ----- Quest for Truth Cover your eyes and really see things Become aware what else it brings. The wind blows rain across the window Looking with the eyes your ears endow. How empty a room without love there, Feeling of touching someone who cares. The silence of a warm summer night Warmth of darkness, no need of light. The fullness and warmth is what is meant Mother Earth breathing, warm and content. ![]() ----- Silent Woods I cannot cry to release my sorrow Instead I shrug and wait the morrow. There is nought left now but memory And what is that, but what used to be. Death is no lonely stranger to me now Nor one with whom friendships grow. Life is now a careful measure that I allow And only rarely let my true feelings show. In my solitude I can relive lost dreams In silent woods no-one hears screams. ![]() ----- Unequalled Wisdom The fairground that is life has many choices, And equally speaking out, so many voices. On the fairground that is life, enjoy all you can. And equally avoid criticism by a religious man. ![]() ----- Under Autumn Skies - For Syria Under the early autumn half moon brought Forth many promises but results are naught. The ground is damp from assured treaty Like a politicians kiss, just wet and empty. The land's not angry with them, or their kin And only seeks to release the pain within. I want them to weep and release their pain So that the world can all try to be one again. But too much power will oppose the plan And who will suffer in the end...just man. ![]() ----- Unwanted Love What memories of spring do I recall Too few to sate my desires at all Or perhaps regret, and ignore the liars, Early spring is when love lights her fires. New found life is the same everywhere Experiment, experience, find then care And then forget or perhaps regret it all Because of pain, not tried new love at all. Now comes unhappy and a wish to forget, Next is summer and a time for regret ![]() Anticol - Vladimir Kush ----- Vernal Pledge I hear birds making nests through inner walls, Because the weather's cold with frequent squalls, They sing to me, whilst working or at play It cannot help but brighten up my day A song that birds sing, safe within their lair The music in my ears is extraordinaire. When all of earth awakens from its sleep, A kind of promise for their home to keep, And spring awaits the hatching of each brood, My solemn vow in this vernal splenditude. ![]() ----- Waders in Wellington How apt the name of the "Long White Cloud". How true the vision of Wellington That before he had heard of these "Fair Isles" He created footwear to travel thereon. Inelegant black, built for function only and Totally shunned by the fashion paragon. But need must when the Devil drives And sensible footwear helps one survive Please take me back before much longer To shorts, and sun, and open footwear. ![]() ----- Yesterdays Dreams As I watch a leaf whilst sat under a tree The wind is causing it to dance with glee Pirouetting in the air like a ballet dancer Possessed by the wind who's a necromancer Imagination given reign to a mystery Yesterdays dreams seem to blow from me Tomorrows like the leaf are still up in the air And yet now I'm free, no longer do I care No longer do I worry about uncertainty As I watch a leaf whilst sat under a tree. ![]() Construction Upstairs - Vladimir Kush ----- Zilch Tonight My words fall dead upon the floor, Bugger 'em, they were useless, a bore. Another syllable, statement, rhyme, Destroyed by an overworked mind. Another senseless act of blubberage, Wreaked upon the English language. It was lined up against a wall to kill Then we all took aim and fired at will. Another battalion of words stepped up, Prepared for the impending stuff up. ![]() back to list |

Jem FarmerThe tantalizing bloom, her beauty rare, That tempts the hummingbird to stop and stare, With glist'ning desire upon her lips blush, To bring a shady red in wanton flush. Like hungered hearts the two at last combine, In this, the place, that love and lust entwine. Dark promises of more to come and yet For now in pleasure their needs are met. Oh sweet, the pink orchid that teases me, Her hummingbird to set her passion free. ![]() ----- The Mystery I look in her eyes and feel the fires burn, Such passion is not a fleeting sojourn. I feel her heart beat tugging upon mine, As in her kiss I taste the sweetest wine. My tongue longs to linger upon her lip, While gently teasing as her senses slip, Before the lingual dance in rhythmic need, Unspoken words and our desire is freed. Just feelings speak in enigma's abyss, Then shared in the mystery of a kiss. ![]() ----- Mystical Mountains This peaceful place is where two worlds entwine, Each rocky crag a simple hallowed shrine. So high above the seas amid the clouds, With gentle misty spirals as white shrouds. Old mountain peaks from molten earth below As the sun sets begin to burn and glow, Until the lady's kiss of silver light, Reveals their beauty unto the dark of night. 'Tis here I sit to hear a goddess speak, In magic words of destiny's mystique. ![]() ----- Setting Sun I saw your face above me tonight, The setting sun catching your hair, just right. The curve of lips became my wondrous sky, Your breath the breeze as I whispered a sigh. My fingers teased tousled hair from your face, As your lips put mine in their rightful place. I felt you arouse me beyond my dreams Our love flowing in tempestuous streams And all I could see was your eyes, so wild, As your kiss released my heart, long exiled. ![]() ----- Soul of a Raven O Raven perched atop the willow tree, A guardian of all that he can see. His grating call to summon the twilight, And brings us safely to our rest tonight. O Raven soaring on your wings of black, Always onward and never looking back. Carrion hunter searching through the sky, He takes my soul to where're he doth fly. It is the world of Man that holds me down, Yet my soul is graced with his mantled gown. ![]() ----- Spirit of a Child She's walking the streets, alone again, Her broken heart has known nothing but pain. She cannot feel the falling rain or sun, Unwanted child, she has no place to run. A wandering soul alone in the dark, She hides in the trees of an empty park. Just watching children leave the way they came, When their mother gently calls out their name. And no one comes to take her safely home, So once again through the night she must roam. ----- War Crime Echoes of bullets and old bombs invade, So long forgotten by those on parade. Their hopes and dreams lie shattered, caked in blood, Unsung, our heroes left to die in mud. Old news repeats another love has gone, And somehow the family must carry on. His staring eyes never saw his child grow, The hell inside is all his heart can know. This, the gratitude of his homeland, And here he dies with none to hold his hand! ![]() back to list |
Bruce HendersonThe waking flower in the morning Sun forgets the shuteyed night it left behind Whatever terror crept along its stem is washed away with morning's cleansing dew It has no need for shadowed symmetry to see the world in punctual relief What aspiration need a flower crave when dreams are pollinated from the sky It merely opens up its trusting eyes and soaks up all the beauty of the light back to list |
Iris KI laced my shoes at half past 2 and scanned the cloudless arching blue I found no trace or hint of ill just calm and hot, the wind was still. The sun was bright, I battened hatches I gathered toys and checked the latches; secured the plants and wicker chairs, umbrellas, cats and shoes in pairs. I eyed the sky again in doubt but better safe and wait it out. The day marched on with little shift except the wind began to lift. The dancing leaves and swaying trees were whispers of my own unease. As sun went down, no storm arose, no hail to damage garden rows. But gathering along with night were heavy clouds- a daunting sight. A few light drops began to fall but dwindled down to none at all. So yet again, it passed us by again it waned and left us dry. We snuggled into bed at last all thoughts of rain and storm had passed. But rumbling low and far away the thunder had begun to play. It shook the ground and brought the rain that dumped on us like a broken main. It's now moved on and all is still though brief and late, it's still a thrill. back to list |
Maureen MoonchildSeasons keep changing in this corner's view, Coloring emotions that help guide one through. There's the negative that fosters from dreamless desires. And the insight that flowers as each morning transpires. There's the rose that has dried but reminds me of then When fantasy "became" and reached out once again To the warmth of soft meanings, where the want was in hold. It was there in the silence, where the message was told: That tomorrow is always and the never fades out, Leaving hope in this corner, in a world beyond doubt. back to list |

I followed the glowing white thin line in fear Here's the story of the Magical Mirrors; I finally reached the first shining glass. I took a peek and I looked quit unique I took off my red dress, looking fine and sleek I heard a voice whisper wow...fine tight Arse I was smiling and grinning I looked real great I was praying the next mirror would tell me more. Part 2 I left completely exposed, where was loving mate? I ran to the next mirror wide eyed hoping to score Seeing the image of the body of me Geesh, what a mess I didn't want to see What happened to my body, now covered in fat sagging boobs and cottage cheese legs fat, fat, fat! bowing head to the floor, I read the message. last mirror ahead, it will lift you spirits and leave you totally thankful for who you are Quickly I moved to the Last mirror for God was there to admire He sighed; Ah! your soul is the treasure and pleasure desire. ----- Well I'll Be Dammed I've grown old and thoughts are dammed My mind's a bitter stagnant jammed up dam In younger years thoughts rush and flow With laughter, joys and most of all loves glow Will I ever be free from the tugging, lingering sore And peacefully rest in the arms of love once more? Stuck and frozen in pains grasping clutch From winters painful and bitter touch Once fiercely fighting the bitter dams flurry To weak I've lost the battle, death's the only cure! back to list |

Leny Roovers![]() Listening Slowly my mind takes to the reins and gets attuned to inner song; thy gentle touch took off old chains- I'll freely find where I belong. My inner light is beckoning, reflects thy wisdom from beyond; and in the hour of reckoning, my heart shall willingly respond. Until my soul joins in thy light, I fill my days with serene plight. ----- Love and laughter You smile your secret smile at me from eyes aglow with love fulfilled. We sigh and touch- soft, languidly, our energy in passion spilled. Your body is well-known and dear, I revel in your muscled hold; we're partners, but one thing is clear, in bed I do as I am told... Or so you like to think, my sweet... beneath warm skin I kiss love's beat. ----- My silent lake I dive into my silent lake, her waters heal, remove all ache. My body may be tired or weak, in her I rest, find all I seek. With her soft ripples she enfolds my busy mind, till peace unfolds. Her open arms will take me in, she is my home, my inner skin. Born from her substance, I'll accept her patient Love, in freedom kept. ----- Pigeons and Doves As heavens bleed their crystalled blood, the earth below turns into mud. In spreading pools upon grey stone, we're called by angels to atone. A flock of pigeons just flew down and huddle close, in pear-tree's crown. Embodied as a harmless dove, they bring a message from above- should angels stop to cry clear floods, our trees no longer could grow buds. ----- Spring Against high, azure skies, trees dance with tossing heads, they sway and prance. Their green-clad arms reach for the sun, now finally spring has begun. Above the chorus-line of trees, white gulls soar on air's upward streams; they pull my heart, extract my dreams- I raise my face to catch love's breeze. Still higher billow clouds' white sails, while in their wake, more blue unveils. ----- Spring garden White blossoms on my pear trees' arms, unfold soft petals, show off charms. Amidst dry twigs of last year's fall, the blackbirds search for worms, still small. While on the fence, my neighbour's cat thinks of her dinner, ears drawn flat. She takes a giant leap below- the birds have flown, she was too slow. High in the apple-tree they sing a serenade, to welcome spring. ----- Tenderness Your voice sends thrills along my spine, my heartstrings echo in accord; our bodies that so well combine, weave harmony on love's own chord. My fingertips travel your skin and linger on each cherished spot, I kiss the black dust on your chin, in which now specks of grey are caught. Life drew new lines into your face- they disappear, when we embrace. ----- Watching With winged out knees and heels aligned, I watch thought-clouds drift through my mind. Each breath is born above my womb, it travels upward, comes to bloom. As prãna flows through chakras' line, new strands of colour swift entwine till in my body's inner room pure cloth is woven on light's loom. Pulsating patterns grow and shine as silence deepens in my shrine. back to list |
Dinah SerritelliI must admit I had no bloody clue, About this challenge Sonnetina Due. Couplets it says Well! That seems just fine, So rambling on I write line after line. I am by nature a bit long on wind, Did not know by line count I would be pinned. A little frustrating to say the least, To try and harness this broody old beast. Five couplets equal a line count of ten, My first and my last…won't do it again. ----- The Need My man and I settled for life in the West, To become farmers we were slightly obsessed. Built a house that sat solid side of a hill Made friends, have a community if you will. We keep some pigs, chickens, horses, even goats, We grow beans, corn, potatoes, wheat and some oats. There in the back behind a wall made of stone Is the reason we never stray far from home. Two little graves for our daughter and our son, Lost to a fever in eighteen ninety one. 2 I could bring forth no more lonesome was our plight, When the children died we seemed to lose our light. In church the pastor spoke 'bout an Orphan Train Thus we went to meet it in the pouring rain. We were looking for a child to call our own We sought smiles and laughter for our childless home. My man wanted for help with chores, a strong boy, I just wanted a child to give us some joy. I saw me a boy, puny, just around ten, In his tired arms, a girl babe, his to defend. 3 'I ain't going nowhere without Hannah May, If you wants me, then, as well, she'll have to stay.' I tugged at Hugh's sleeve, my eyes just filled with tears, 'These here are our children to love through the years. I won't leave here, leaving these children behind,' He looked at me like I was mad, lost my mind. I'd made up my mind, that's all there was too it, He just sighed no noise from his lips did emit. It's been nigh on twenty years, our children grown, They made this sad house a most happy home. The best thing we ever did, my Hugh and me, Was to add these children to our family tree. back to list |
