#16 Sicilian Sonnet
This sonnet is the first sonnet poetry form and was created by Giacomo da Lentini. It was originally written in Sicilian and mainly concerned courtly, chivalrous love. Should you desire anymore information you will find it at The Poets Garret.
I have set my heart in serving God
I have a place in my heart for God reserved,
so that I may go to Heaven,
to the Holy Place where, I have heard,
people are always happy and joyous and merry.
I wouldn't want to go there without my lady
the one with fair hair and pale complexion,
because without her I could never be happy,
being separated from my lady.
But I do not say that with blasphemous intent,
as if I wanted to sin with her:
if I did not see her shapely figure
and her beautiful face and tender look:
since it would greatly comfort me
to see my woman shine in glory.
Giacomo da Lentini (pre 1250)
Breathe not so deep my love to sound like a sigh
Rather each breath shall be a tribute to passion
That take thee to heights above where angels fly
Each kiss given in pleasure rather than ration.
Touch not wary my love, let togetherness apply
Waiting and wanting that union be it of hand
Or lip or more there is no need at all to be shy
Eyes conquered me wishing we should band
My heart responds in kind, likewise agreeing
And pounds in tempo like a marching drum.
Thy passionate lips are all that I am now seeing
Calling me, come to me, come to me, come!
You have won me, you control my whole being
I am yours forever, or until Eternity is done.
The Days Will Come
The days will come the days will go
The hands of time move on and on
The years will pass not fast nor slow
Counting weeks as they pass anon
And in due time our love will grow
Eternity's silver torch has shone
The days will come the days will go
The hands of time move on and on.
When suns have died and after snow
At the end of time when all is gone
Our love outlasted the world below
Our souls will smile having lived on
The days will come the days will go
The hands of time move on and on
You came into my dreams with your smile
Waking me up from the lethargy of life.
That look would eternally beguile
Any man, and destine him to an afterlife.
In search of that one look, that time again.
I would beg you to repeat for me alone,
Would repeat that smile and win your swain
Who knows full well your heart is not of stone.
Having won your prize, think nothing less of this
You know I will not be your abject slave, no way!
Instead I will be won over, with a simple kiss
You now possess my heart and soul and stay
Willfully ignoring that fate has in store pure bliss
And knowing finally what that look had to say.
Hold My Hand
Hold my hand for a little while longer
My love for you makes me bid you stay.
They say absence makes love grow stronger
But lovers shouldn't have to go away?
Have they ever felt they were torn by anger
And watched the best part carried away,
Rain clouds replace a sky of easy languor
As the sunshine turned to the dullest day.
No hope or prayer can ever ease that pain
Until then only patience is your saving grace
Or speed up time should they return again.
Awaiting the time that you'll see the face
That will tear the gloom from leaden plain
Then living once again can take place.
Just a feeling
The feeling never leaves when you love someone
It's with you for eternity when your soul is shared
The parting of a lifetime when your love is gone
That you'll never meet again is nothing to be feared.
Sob gently over her, your tears constantly flow on
Her spirit looking at you, knowing that you cared
Her spirit touches, a spirits kiss, even after dawn
Keeps her by your side you have wisely declared.
You feel her guiding you, helping meet your fears
Knowing deeply in her heart that you love her so
You felt her touch and kiss, now feel her tears
Smiling softly, knowing you'll never let her go
She's with you now an' will be through the years
And with each passing day love will only grow.
We are bound together as close as two people can be
Wrapped tightly together, breathing the same air
This type of love comes once and lasts for eternity
Treat delicately this fragile love we are both aware.
What we've shared would vanish if it was separately
I would forever carry you within my souls care.
In your hands my love, you hold a loving key
Should I lose you, then I would forever despair.
The certainty of love only comes once in a lifetime
Our two souls are destined to be always together
That Forever I'm yours and you'll be ever mine
Our Endless love would be withstanding forever
Every star in the sky for us, will Eternally shine
This is my declaration to you, my word whatsoever.
Language of Souls
My love, I want to grow old with you,
For a long life can never be my destiny
But we both know this can't be true.
And when you die I pray it will it be me
My very soul I now offer up to you.
Waiting there, to guide you to eternity
Together we'll stay within Eden's view
Please do not deny me this simple plea.
Our two souls will kiss and again unite
The flame of love once more together
As spirits, in love again we will ignite
Forever bound, forever, loving ever
There is no time and no day nor night,
I only know I love you and will forever!
No more will I feel your body pressed against mine
No soft, gentle touch that always aroused my fire
Nor kisses to make my mind spin, like port wine
Your pleasure, your love, I always tried to aspire.
The bed is empty now, with no comfort nor sign
Memories that lie there are just simply a mire
The doona laid back, the sheets so cold, frozen
And gone is the loving, now the sun will expire.
Consider only this; that we were both there
Two lovers who were together for one short while
We shared everything and laid our souls out bare
Where our love and honesty was the only style
Making lasting promises that were made to care
And although now apart it is all still worthwhile.
One time our bodies will unite again
We will share things as we did before
Inevitably we will part still but as one
Then once again, we meet and explore
Bound in the heart on some new terrain
Our lives may be perfect circle we adore
In others take shapes we cannot explain.
This time we meet for such a little time
Loving and sharing so many things.
Your dreams are they of me sometimes
In a time and place where our love sings
Where love's perfect and bells chime
And that love gives us Eternal wings.
Can we know the truth in black and white?
The sun shines bright regardless of event.
Some men of power lurk in lunar light,
In order to repel our protests and dissent.
It's thought majority rules, that's wrong, despite
The cries of those who now withhold consent,
Fairness, goodness, is desired if held upright,
Yet still the darkened night breaths bad intent.
It takes resolve to hold the tidal might,
Against swirling torrents of evils foment.
Thus in war and conflicts we meet and unite,
If needed, surrendering bodies unspent.
So it is that our youth dies in thought of right
Ignorant of others building their wealth and intent.
Sometimes a wanderer may see many things,
And just as often many lessons learn.
In apprehension, to the past he clings
Experience found as homeward he turns.
Yet hope still lingers and once again he rings,
Words spoken, promises made, he returns,
Will she be the one who will make his heart sing,
Then casts his lot with chance, still fearing burns.
Her smile speaks more than words could ever say,
And her eyes speak volumes of her intent.
How can there be doubts, no desire to stay,
Only his touch will say he is content.
They wine and dine, and meet love all the way
And finally fate gives her willing consent.
Oh Love, doest thou know thy brother Hate?
Nay! Please realise that he remembers thee;
His knowledge of thee could never dissipate.
For no matter how ignorant thou dost be,
And shouldst thou seek, perchance, to expiate,
Or wish to make amends for past inclemency
He was never ever known to mitigate
Whilst thou art modest, forgiving in thy decency
For in thy answer "Learn to turn the other cheek"
How can you love someone who has hurt again?
Not to hate would seem by some to be weak
And so why then is it wrong to hide the pain?
Sometimes it is that action that the weakest seek
When to walk away completely would be the gain.
Each morning together walking along the beach
Stopping awhile to skim a stone or steal a kiss
Then chase on again to run just out of reach
Such were our days and such was our bliss.
It was another sunny day, a gorgeous peach.
It was autumn, the tourists were now amiss
Slightly warmer perhaps for this kinda reach
We'd decided this was the place not to miss.
Daily drives to tourist traps and shopping malls
Through mists of time membrin odds and ends
And the nights of love where I was enthralled
Or spend a day driving visiting old friends
Driving back with a smile and mem'ry halls
Too soon time calls "Quit" and all this ends.
Zinfandel and More
Tonight let's have a drinking race
Fill the tankard with wine that's soured
Without your love no clock has a face.
Competition in jars shall be what's scored
My feet's far too leaded to stand the pace
Life's bitter brew my cup's o'erflowed
Memory still stays I cannot ever erase.
Pour down the wine let us drink to forget
Un-lived dreams litter the path I now walk
Plans made in good faith, caused only sweat
Once loving conversations are now just talk
With pleasured gifts now nought but a debt.

He tilled the land from morning to dusk
as his father had done long before him
reaped the earth of a corn fields crust
within short stubbled stalks kept trim
the earth was hard and the going grim
a long earned life is more than a whim
never retired though he thought he must
his hard earned days were looking slim
but he would miss the old blackbird cry
as he awakened him up within song
a mellow daybreak with sun in the sky
if he gave up his heart would belong
nigh unto the dawning of a gentle sigh
knowing then decisions shall be wrong.
Hurt But Unbroken
I have suffered much loss in the past
ventured much but nothing I gained
life was for me just a plaster cast
over a broken heart that had pained
not a thing was meant for me to last
within a confidence so restrained
sad the tears that flowed from within
the depths of a grieving heart therein
why oh why was this destined to be
memories are all there is left to keep
loving hearts shall once more nurture
when past is cast let blessed joys free
then loving hearts shall once again reap
much the same as it may for the future.
I cast away deep thoughts of hesitation
for instincts tell me I shall miss the plot
just one calming session of relaxation
when an active mind shall speak of not
for a silent dream may reveal nought
yet dreams within are all we have got
alone within the trance of meditation
instinct reveals as wonders are sought
so shall the inner soul awaken to light
fresh within natures inward precision
there may be no hesitation unto insight
for eyes within sight shall be of a vision
especially so within the darkest night
where natural instincts fear no evasion.
Prophecy Of Earth
Dense the mists that gather all winter long
shall let no light show thro`a shrouded sky
nor shall the robins sing their winters song
and earth lies dormant within hill tops high
not an image nor scent of autumns gone by
winds are silent not a sound I wonder why
when all is as still then something is wrong
yet moods of nature not a soul shall defy
we are mere mortals surviving on earth
the air we breathe is part of existance
if all the season should suffer dearth
our life on earth may have no resistance
unless perhaps this planet plans rebirth.
when life once again regains persistance.
Lots of periwinkles clinging to a rock
so vulnerable are they within shells hide
it may just be they shall end up as stock
and lose all their juicy bits deep inside
a winkle is a shell fish that has his pride
marooned on land from the ocean wide
eaten by a sea gull or cooked in a crock
or consumed by humans from high tide
fishermen may use them as bait you see
the fated winkle though shant disguise
what he was meant at the start to be
he shall never see for he has no eyes
so vulnerable a shell fish from the sea
boiled to a turn yet still we hear cries.

As thought-ships drift across the sea of mind,
I watch white clouds stretch out like curling waves.
Row after row of heaven's surf that crave
their peaceful shore, leave heaving storms behind.
Strong winds have blown most tall-ships far apart-
celestial fleet dispersed in thin white lines,
now drawing light and graceful, floating signs
on sky's blue canvas, always changing chart.
I see how gulls are soaring on air's streams,
my heart flies with them, rising to far spheres;
it travels ever higher on sun's beams-
light's stairway to your shrine that I revere.
My soul traverses oceans in my dreams,
with birds and thought-ships, clouds that volunteer.
When silence reigns once more within my mind,
I lay down chaos' burdens at your feet
and lift my head as souls prepare to meet-
our hearts are reaching out, in song entwined.
A bridge of hope spans continents of time,
it shows a choice of not yet traveled ways-
some are still dark, while others are ablaze
and beckoning to take the upward climb.
I take your offered hand as we proceed,
my footsteps fall in rhythm with heart's song;
vibrations harmonize in bodies keyed,
enfolded in your love, I can't go wrong.
We walk the path of life with steady speed,
enjoying each new view that comes along.
Still hidden in the womb of time to be,
our future grows from seed, sown in the past;
received in fertile soil, it might set free
two souls that have been bound by love to last.
Within my cells I feel my heart's strong plea
to bear the fruits of waiting, long amassed.
Life after life we met in Fate's own play,
can we consume this time our love's cache?
Inside, soft voices whisper to have trust,
preparing stretching tissues to give birth,
so once again hearts feel the upward thrust
and souls grow wings, escaping from the earth.
They leave behind old bonds of stifling dust,
while being filled with harmony and mirth.
You are my rainbow when the skies are gray,
the smile in people's eyes on each new meet;
you're in the song of birds at dawn's first tweet
and in my every prayer throughout each day.
I feel your touch in autumn sun's sweet kiss,
your taste still lingers in my favourite wine-
in strong black coffee I cannot decline.
You're in my quickened heartbeat as you call,
I feel your lips brush mine before I sleep;
and when the sky turns red at evening's fall,
I see your face among the stars' bright sweep.
At night you draw me close, keep me enthralled,
I listen to your heartbeat, strong and deep.
I watch my mind shift thought-ships into sheep,
in countless flocks they crowd green mental hills.
An ever-moving body, never still,
prevents my soul to come to you in sleep.
Imprisoned by soft woolly shapes, I stand,
unable to step forward in my dreams;
in this world in-between, silence redeems,
but I can't reach your peaceful, promised land.
I hear dogs bark as sheep start to disperse-
the shepherd of my mind has come to aid;
his whistle turns the herd into reverse
while shelties gather strays into the glade.
In this recaptured freedom I traverse
the meadows of my mind- now tranquil, staid.
Four bright-eyed pointed faces look at me
with eyes that range from blue to yellow, green;
their message is one I have often seen:
it's after six and dinner-time, agree?
I can't refuse this plea, delay my tea,
obeying their twice-daily meal routine-
each gets its preferred plate, the elder three
have fish or soft food, while the youngest queen
eats biscuits, with some cat-milk on the side.
When after dinner, each has washed its face,
they join me on the lounge to watch the news,
three left and right, one near my head, astride.
Inside, a purring concert's taking place,
outside, the evening sky wears crimson hues.

Brian Paul Sullivan
Blankly we stare up at the changing skies,
As stars bearing our dreams sail out of sight,
Something inside rebelliously cries,
Against the cold loneliness of the night,
Even the wind issues despairing sighs,
In total sympathy with our sad plight,
I've not forgotten the look in your eyes,
When you said you must leave on the next flight,
Faithfully watching from opposite shores,
For some happy sign that will ease our pain,
My breath starts to quicken as my hope soars,
Because out of the dark comes a small plane,
No one will follow, you barred all the doors,
Your country's loss has become our hearts' gain.
Our stars are not out nor is the moon lit,
Blinded are we within our own shadows,
Together but not in this blackened pit,
No longer can we find our green meadows,
Harsh pains of the heart when unity's split,
Cannot be soothed by applying aloes,
They say that a crime we two did commit,
Sharing the gift of a fragrant red rose,
Our answer my love is now coming nigh,
Gather your things for we're leaving tonight,
Far from their biased shall both of us fly,
Quickly we'll ride far away from their sight,
No tragic play's end is for you and I,
Defiance is ours to do what is right.
Hear a heart pounding somewhere in the mist,
Blindly start searching for what has been lost,
Frustrated fingers clench into a fist,
Too many times has this same path been crossed,
Nerves are on edge as they writhlingy twist,
Sanity failing as reason gets tossed,
All grains of reason are turned into grist,
Spirit gets buried beneath a chilled frost,
A single warm flame comes forth without fear,
Demons of madness all flee from the light,
Positive feelings shine hope crystal clear,
What had been broken will soon be set right,
Frost fast retreats from a sweet salty tear,
All is restored from the gift of love's might.
Heart fighting mind in tormented battle,
Sometimes what is right can also be wrong,
Never accept that souls are just chattel,
Nor settle for somewhere you don't belong,
If flying thoughts continue to rattle,
Be not a lemming who follows the throng,
Just to discover there's naught but attle*,
Leaving a whimper as your final song,
Quiet the storms you have raging inside,
Expanding each eye until you have calm,
Taming will come with reversal of tide,
Allowing you to think outside the rhomb,
Clarity will become your true guide,
Fading to vapour every last qualm.
The sound of her name can make my breath catch,
Often I've failed to find words to speak,
It seems that my tongue gets caught in a latch,
When she draws near as my legs become weak,
Bad trick of my brain to simply detach,
Wonder she doesn't believe I'm a freak,
Surely I don't come across as a catch,
What do you do when your nerve is too weak?
Today's the day to take matters in hand,
Nothing is gained when you hide in a shell,
Allowing my fears to leave me unmanned,
Set me to burn in my own private hell,
Determined to let chances freely land,
I'll speak from the heart while holding my Belle.
