#09 Blank Verse and Free Form Sonnet

Blank Verse still possesses Iambic pentameter, although there may still be an argument to have an octave, (or 8-line stanza), followed by a sestet, (or 6-line stanza). In which the octave sets up a situation upon which the sestet comments or visa versa.
There is of course no rhyme scheme.

Riverside

Not long ago as we strolled along the river
Arms around each other in the falling rain
Moving along slowly, unhurried, in love.
Wet hair gleaming like burnished copper
Laughing, seeing how close your clothes cling.
Stopping, sheltering, aroused, pressing, hiding,
Against a tree after our first kiss I looked
Two swirling voids that make my heart sing
The mirrors of your soul, touched by mine
I looked deep, deep into your very heart
And saw your love, saw everything offered
And knew then, that from this moment in time
You were mine forever, my soul, my mate
Looking at me, I knew you felt the same.

Ryter Roethicle

With Free Verse, there is no meter nor any rhyme scheme. What else can be said except that it has 14 lines, and some great sonnets have been written in this form.

A dark red rose..

You came in the house smiling,
Clutching a dark red rose
You had found it comming home
You held out your treasure
And offered it to me to smell
I did and shared your pleasure
A lovely fragrance made more so
Simply by your gentle touching
Such simple things so easy, so grand
So long I have known you
You have taught me love
And the meaning of true friendship
Now you have taught me how to fly
Please show me where to land

Noise

Hearing the gulls squabble over crumbs
screeching or crying who wins
whats lost amongst the feathers
falling then lifting up to skies,
where bursting clouds remember
the way that currents of air oceans weave,
rustling between leaves on branches,
making breakers out of waters waves,
whistling through our eaves
and evenings brushing hair in our eyes
as we hum tunes aloft
competing with the birds,
squirrels mock like scolding old women
while children laugh to hear such noise.

Beethoven

I know he was loved by God, how else could he write?
His music transcends humanity bring peace to the soul
In silence he lived, because of his deafness
But in deafness came sounds no-one else could create
Images were created placing imagination above sound
And though he is dead his music will live on to Eternity
Perhaps his secret was in his deafness
After all, there would be no distractions to his writing,
No sounds that'd drive thoughts and ideas from his mind
In those days there was no phones or texting, to distract
I wonder, if it would work the same for a poet?
The constant sound of motorbikes, cars and trucks
Are the normal background here, but the scenery is inspiring
But how can one write about it, if noises constantly sound?

Di Melo Dolce

There was not much space on the path
As I passed, an apple fell behind me
I felt the tree as if she were talking
And was making an offering to me
Please be gentle to me as you pass
I felt a smile and another apple fell.
I touched her as I often do when I pass
Knowing she's had it hard a long while.
On the way back she gave me two more
They were perfect in shape and colour
I sensed her smile as I picked them up
And I touched and thanked her once again.
As I walked back to the house I felt that
The plants were grateful for my love.

-----

Intoxication

I am intoxicated by the love in your eyes
There is no colour unless we use a star,
But even by comparison any star is dull
Compared to what I can see in your eyes.
Your look, your smile lights up my day
Gold is dull by comparison to your smile
Then you light up every moment for me.
Even the darkest night is lighted by your aura
There is no darkness when you're around
There's no coldness, my heart will warm us both
Your touch has ignited an eternal flame
Together the world orbits the sun much faster
Our love has shorter days than when apart
And the days together seem to flash by.

-----

Kangaroo Woods

We used to walk hand in hand in those woods my lover and I
one day she put her fingers in her mouth and whistled, shrilly
why I will never truly understand
but that crazy cry will forever echo through my soul
like a hundred crystal goblets shattering at a snails pace
into shards at my feet.
I didn't even have a bag to put the pieces in
Now fast approaching autumn as I walk alone in the woods
and would like to whistle just once
I never have you see,
but I don't dare sometimes the whistle returns.
Sometimes the whistle scars the heart
like Antarctic winds on a naked face
and I would remember how much I loved you.

-----

Mini-man

I see you lying there mini-man,
what will time make of you?
Your light blue eyes stare at me,
pale pools of innocent wonder.
Then you smile, "Why?" I wonder.
You do not know who I am
yet you smiled, and offered me your light.
You kick and gurgle and slaver,
pursuits hardly worthy of a God,
yet you are held in awe by your slaves
who stand in line to worship you.
Perhaps emperors and tyrants should learn,
the simple lesson from the words of Christ,
"Unless ye become like a child"…

-----

Opal Eyes

The cold outside is no match for me
The heat I feel inside burns away
All shadows of doubt and gloom.
I see before me a Golden Bridge
And on there a vision with opal eyes
Willing me to step forward and walk
With her across the final chasms of life.
Perhaps we have walked this way before
Perhaps not, the certainty is now
For at this moment I am lost in opal eyes.
Even when the flame has dulled to a glow
What finer heat is that, when it is banked
So that it will last for all eternity
And I can spend my time lost in opal eyes.

Question of Love

Is there such a thing as love
And if so, is it as eternal as we are told?
I look outside my window and see
The leaves are spent, and the year is old.
I'm not sure of the seasons anymore
Sometimes it is warm as the sun shines
Yet here the sun shines and it's cold
"Is it spring," I ask "Or is it autumn?"
Are we in Summer, or are we in Winter?
Like the leaves I see the end,
But I also know it is only a time of rest
And come the Spring we see life again.
So I realise in Winter we must nurture
Then later we will see much better things

-----

Rosellas

Noisy children dance and play in the leaves
Whilst I am locked here inside my glass jar
The life outside seems so far, far, far away
And the cool, morning air will soon turn warm
I envy the Rosellas; they always seem so alive,
As each morning their chorus greets us
And win our approval they are beautiful birds
Whilst testing the scent of the dry autumn
So we may begin our more humdrum existence
Whilst they will swoop and play in the heavens.
I believe if I were a bird I would become sane
Able to feel the pleasure of beautiful things
Taken for granted in mans impatient search
For physical release and mental gratification.

-----

She Dances

She dances in the night
Her eyes the colour of the heavens.
I can see the stars shining from them
And feel her beckoning me to enter.
I am already lost to her,
What more is there to lose?
She owns my soul, my being.
She dances in the night
I take her hand and join her
Instantly I am transported
Beyond the stars to create them.
Celestial music is at our command
Constellations celebrate our congress
And the universe is as one.

-----

Tears, gentle tears

I have seen a different side of you.
Hidden beneath all that steel,
is a fragile side, a loving side,
that is insecure and feels.
It is this side I have seen.
You reminded me of a little sparrow
that has flown in through an open door
wings flapping flying around, frightened,
lost, seeking direction, seeking love.
I tried to help you and pick you up
and although I could never be yours,
I wanted to be the one
who would guide you to the window
so that you would be free to fly again.

-----

Unquiet Heart

I used to love another,
Circumstances and places changed
I was there and so was she
Then I was no longer there
And she could not wait.
I used to love another,
She was torn from me.
The weeping has finished
And in time I moved on.
I used to love another,
But we grew apart as we changed,
Because we did not change together
And love is a relate type thing.
Should I love another?

-----

Vagrant Fragrance

There's a smell of cheap booze, and cigarettes about her,
She asks me if I'm looking for a good time
But I hear despair and deprivation in her voice.
Her huge brown eyes look at me
Trying to make promises she is incapable of keeping
Looking into her blank dilated pupils
And I can see she has already sold her soul.
She lifts her skirt and shows me her goods
There's a tattooed dragon coiled up
Dripping venom just above her shaved slit
I wonder which offers more danger.
I pretend to be foreign as I walk on
Her offers of sexual fantasy turn to verbal abuse
And even now I can taste the stain of her iniquity.

-----

Wine's Watch

Cradled in your dreaming care
I watch you from within my spirit being
Desirous of your waking presence.
Seeing you there makes me aware
Of the intemperance that we are freeing
And my need to ever taste your essence.
You are like a matured wine that I will sup
Wishing that you forever will fill my cup.
Intemperance through love no fault of mine
But my sober soul to yours I now attach.
Drunk through love there's no headier wine
For with both, they will our senses snatch
Now whilst I sleep I know all will be fine,
Whilst love's flame keeps its warmed watch.

-----

Your Wings

The breath of a silent night is broken
Unspoken mouthings of vows of love
And looks, speaking, saying everything
Promising a match created in Heaven.
I hear the echo of you my lover
As you wrap your wings around my heart
Finally my soul is allowed to touchdown
And see your spirit laced with gold
With tears falling like a rainstorm of love
Each drop with its own reflection
That feels as soft as a butterfly's kiss.
Any love can last forever this way
To never fade like moonlight on water
This way Eternity could never be enough.

Passing Ship

I sought the moment in her eyes
while denying the turmoil inside my mind
my voice coaxing her forward
daring her to reach oblivion
all for the precious freedom
locked in the glowing aftermath of sex
embraced in serenity and carnal destruction
yet still my soul felt alone
isolated from desire
rejected by love
with that inner voice mocking me
as I silently walked away
into the night
before she could ask more than my name.
