#21 Tennyson's Sonnet

The Kraken has been described as one of Tennyson's few "good" sonnets, in spite of it possessing fifteen lines. With a rhyme scheme of, a1. b. a2. b. c. d. d. c. e. f. e. a2. a1. f. e. it would appear to follow the Italian pattern rather than the English which concludes with a couplet. It's argued the sestet was changed to a septet to emphasise the enormity of the beast.
The Kraken

Below the thunders of the upper deep;
Far, far beneath in the abysmal sea,
His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep
The Kraken sleepeth: faintest sunlights
About his shadowy sides: above him swell
Huge sponges of millennial growth and height;
And far away into the sickly light,
From many a wondrous grot and secret cell
Unnumbered and enormous polypi
Winnow with giant arms the slumbering green.
There hath he lain for ages and will lie
Battening upon huge sea-worms in his sleep,
Until the latter fire shall heat the deep;
Then once by man and angels to be seen,
In roaring he shall rise and on the surface die.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson

Kraken ref
It's argued the sestet was changed to a septet to emphasise the enormity of the beast. If this is the case then to keep to the standard 14 lines the e has to go leaving a rhyme scheme of:
a1. b. a2. b. c. d. d. c. e. f. e. a2. a1. f.
it could be further argued that the e. could remain and the f. go and as it is a new tercet anything is possble.
Journeys

Dreams are kept in bidons of water
Satisfying a riders need then thrown away
Picked up by a friend and returned later
Or a passing stranger who feels it passé.
A breath away to where you where
Yet a life and world away from you
The past has gone, the future I despair
Shared moments past, a promised view
Now in later life we've a dream we share
It is something we felt before we met
And on meeting we find we deeply care
We must do something sooner not later
Feelings of love are not like bidons of water
We are no longer a solo life we are a duet.

Teagan De Danaan

In this example Teagan has the ideal setting a2. a1. and used f, as the last line.
Just Your Look

Welcome the Sun, smile and say "Hello!"
Just be thankful knowing somewhere
You never need be afraid to watch it go
When there's someone for whom you care.
Her eyes light up with the sight of you
Sounds of silence when naught needs said
Looking forwards to all those times ahead
With hopes of a day making dreams true;
Her touch, tells you, you'll never part
The look, on her face when you groan
Her lips curve, are smiles from her heart.
Welcome the Sun, smile and say "Hello!"
You never need be afraid to watch it go
Like a clock as it stops time, and space.

Teagan De Danaan

In this example Teagan has kept to a1, a2 and used x, as the last line.

Awake at last

Wouldst take thee in my arms for a while
Eternity would be much too short a time
Thou know'st my heart thou hast easily beguiled
To leave too soon would be a grievous crime.
I feel one kiss is not enough for thee
Rather a thousand I would plant each day
Thy smile lighting up heavens given way
And my reward simply would be to see.
Someday soon I hope, at least not too long
I'll see thy arms held out to welcome me
Then as we kiss we will hear the Angels song
Wouldst take thee in my arms for a while
Thou know'st my heart thou hast easily beguiled
To hear thee agree to this would make me be.

Courtly Feelings

I want to grow old with you, make a pact,
Because a long life can never be my destiny
Doubtless we both know this to be fact
And when you die I pray it will be me
As spirits, in love again we will ignite
The flame of love, once more together
Ever bound, ever will I be your knight
Devoted to you my sweet Queen forever
Waiting at the gate, to meet and guide you
Together we'll turn as one towards eternity
Two souls Kissing as they are want to do.
Doubtless we both know this to be fact
I want to grow old with you, make a pact,
The Holy Grail of love will forever be true.

Dolorosa

If it is sorrow and pain you crave
I once had a bottle full of tears
Each time you said goodbye, I'd save,
A tear, until I had a sea of salty spheres.
But each dead heart drop that fell for you
It had a life within of such intensity
And created a surf upon a tideless sea
Multiplied, and colonized, and grew.
I took the bottle to the beach to pour
The life born of my sorrow in the bay.
The life in my tears will swim to you on shore.
Each time you said goodbye, I'd save,
If it is sorrow and pain you crave.
I sat and watched and prayed you'd stay.

-----

Foggy Paths

The air is still, with no sound to tell the way,
Like a poor mortal stumbles in the mist
Of self survival that in time can only betray
Wondering why, and the worth to exist.
There is no beginning or end to this mist
And the only escape is by way of dreams
So the mind conceives various schemes
That shows of an idyllic way to exist.
Is it wrong to believe in these dreams
And cut away the past with a surgeons knife
Trying to alter those damaging schemes
Of self survival that only time can betray.
The air is still, with no sound to tell the way,
And just survive and live mindless themes!

-----

Love Lingers

The piper plays, then each part allots
He lingers but not reluctantly so
In staying back we're tied in tender knots.
Still it's free to you and I, to come and go
Feeling trembles when we kiss this way
Music has stirred the feeling in our breast
And tender touching does all the rest
With looks that bid each other to stay.
Now time and tide has done its worst
And youth and looks are left behind
The piper on occasion gives a burst.
Still we are tied in those tender knots
As he plays each dawn and parts allots
Still seeing us love as will all our kind.

-----

Of Deeper Thought

I still remember all my days with you
But most of all I remember the nights.
Looking down from our starry view
Nights together spent on fancied flights
We had known each other for so long
Now we're apart there's only cloud
To whom do I cry to, or cry out loud?
When we met feelings were so strong
I would rather a different tale be told
Realised long ago when we used to be.
My bed at night lacking you is so cold.
Looking down from our starry view
I still remember all my days with you
Nights of warmth and passion's quay.

-----

Pesadilla

Sleep gives wings to all hidden dreams
And causes my fantasies to take flight.
In my sleep I dare to imagine schemes
Welcoming my deep desires each night.
Yet swift as rain from thunderous beams
Pours sorrow into my somnambulistic sight
Into a painful, and acrimonious plight
Changing the tempo of passioned screams
Tearing at my soul leaving me reeling,
What causes lesser harm than fancies kiss?
'Stead sends imagination away, stealing,
In my sleep I dare to imagine schemes
Sleep gives wings to all hidden dreams
Less virtuous lovers live on, unfeeling.

-----

Questions Lunar

The moon no longer rises full in the sky
With dignity that comes from being a queen
Instead each night we will see her slowly die
All the waxing and waning's there has been.t
For a little while she sleeps needing a rest
What love in her life has she encountered,
I wonder how much love she has spread?
Emptying all of the sadness from her breast
Then we see her, feel her take shape again
Leading we see what she has surmounted
And see her Queenly rightful place attain.
Soon each night we will see her slowly die
And the moon no longer visible in the sky
Lovers still attest their love, she is counted.

-----

Rain Descending

Rain descending from sombre cloud
From the grey morning as we arise
Hearing rain fall like an angry crowd
In the drought catching all by surprise.
A strong wind picks up the shroud
Dragging it o'er, helping suns demise
Half light now lights a land once proud
To most Aussies it is a great surprise.
The birds sit quietly in their nests
For once listening to nature's cries
But they are blase about natures tests.
Hearing rain fall like an angry crowd
Rain descending from sombre cloud
We are victims and El Nino's prize
Realising we are only Natures guests.

-----

Vampire Moon 15 line sonnet

Mine is not to pursue, nor is it to entice,
But realise a realm exists not of man
Where drinking human blood will suffice.
And life is not measured in your span
Hear the subtle beat of leathered wings
And see the silhouette against the light.
For up here I can see what misery it brings.
Too late, you have ventured in the night
Looking down after I see an empty shell
That will awake and curse then bless us
One more soul is added to the ranks of Hell.
Realising human blood alone will suffice
There's no need to pursue, or is it to entice,
instead your new existence will all be plus
And all you'll need will be red blood cells.

Wraith - 15 lines

A wraith clad in the semblance of humanity
Slithered in through the doors souls left ajar.
A slimy silver trail marking its personality,
Further has he to go, yet he has still come far.
A fate unworthy one might well resound.
And question the gods not how things should be,
Freedom!! 'Tis is but a rumour sweet in sound
To this un-dead damned to roam for Eternity.
Unsaid and muttered prayers to heaven are spoken
And do naught, for this ghost is cursed to life
A crucifix or holy water, he still remains unbroken.
Leaving a slimy silver trail that is its personality,
This wraith clad in the semblance of humanity
Have pity on him, he will not cause any strife
Unfulfilled remains its lot, so remains gods forsaken.

-----

X, The Unknowing

How many dreams has there to be
Until we finally hear of one death?
A dream has died, tis hardly a spree,
We might as well give up each breath.
Why give up dreaming because of one?
When it starts, the journey that is life
Hopefully with that love there is no strife.
Why give up, the adventure has begun?
We learn of love at our mother's breasts
Sometimes love fails and we are hurt
But this is only another of life's tests
How many dreams has there to be
A dream has died, tis hardly a spree,
For nothing in life is what it suggests.

Zet Machis, (Stupid) 15 lines

I tried to capture a feeling today,
It fluttered away on butterfly wings.
I was not surprised by it flying away
See on a nearby flower watch as it clings,
Tantalising, but something I learned
Never disturb these things of beauty.
Its freedom's deserved and truly earned.
To release it is only my honourable duty.
To keep it would be against its will
But I still resented it running away
Gliding off to some deep dark chill.
I was not surprised by it flying away
I tried to capture a feeling today,
But obviously I didn't have that skill
I managed to capture some feeling today.

-----

Nen Zet Nachis (Not Stupid) 15 lines

I tried to capture someone's soul today,
She evaded my words, loudly laughing
Then hid not willing to hurt me this way
I thought someone else had made her sing.
She then looked back as if checking me out
Quickly fuelling the imagination in my mind
Is she all alone and wishing to be without?
I'm too ambitious my thoughts now confined.
There's a mixture of frustration and hope
Should I corral this herd of emotions,
Is a women so attractive within my scope?
She hid not willing to hurt me this way
I tried to capture someone's soul today,
Once again putting my pen in motion
This time I know I'm sure I will cope.

After Tennyson

I dare not speak of things I have heard
For seeing only shall be within belief
To quote unwisely may only be absurd
It shall only cause the bearer more grief
For two minds may not ever think anew
Nor see all within deep thoughts alone
What displays in images are never gone
What all shall see may only mean a few
But hearsay cannot be classed as right
Then with insight shall be the way to go
To quote the reference of a poets plight
To quote unwisely may only be absurd
I dare not speak of things I have heard
But to witness all with a keen eyesight.

-----

Astraphobia

It looks very much like summer has gone
Clouds takes the place of the sun lit skies
This is the time that storms shall be prone
For thunderous clouds may forever gather
Causing darkness within dark skies of grey
That brings fear to meek with feeble heart
Too soon did the warmth from summer part
We earthlings may never have a thing to say
For nature takes over upon each new season
And we within weakness shall know no less
For seasons shall ever be there for a reason
It looks very much like summer has gone
This is the time that storms shall be prone
We as earthlings have no say in the matter.

-----

Betrothed as One

Hold fast this love that fortune`s be
Cast not aside thoughts of temptation
That may touch both hearts ever free
Nothing may halt desirous dreams
That may linger within a lovers heart
look to the sky, stars shall ever shine
Upon the ecstasies of passion divine
This is the moment love shall not part
Never shall this love ever be forsaken
Two hearts that shall be united as one
Tis then that both lovers shall awaken
Hold fast this love that fortune`s be
That may touch both hearts ever free
Within time and space may prove as true.

-----

A Deserted Fantasy

When I go I shall not come back as me
But be scantily robed within satin and silk
A queen of Egypt like Cleopatra I may be
Of suitors who may be the one to please
It may all just rely upon a future destiny
Dreams of the eastern sands shall blow
Nigh upon riplets of the winds may flow
May I be with my Prince for all eternity
If I was his Queen and he was my lover
Then history may all be composed again
My fantasy closes but may start all over
When I am gone I shall never be just me
A queen of egypt like Cleopatra I shall be
Which thus remains untrue as a fantasy.

Dragons Den 15 line Sonnet

To unlock the cabin you must lie and wait
For fear of wakening the fearless dragon
As fiery flames may ever be his evil bait
Never hope that fate can be relied upon
He is ever the beast that expels his fire
Tho' some say this beast does not exist
That he is stricken from a primeaval list
For he was never a one for folk to desire
Belief has it that he was not to be shown
To fear humanity nor to hide in disgrace
For fearless was he though forever alone
As fiery flames may ever be his evil bait
To unlock the cabin you must lie and wait
Be aware he may lose his time and space
For past unto his future was never known.

-----

Earthly Creatures

Creatures of the earth we cannot ignore
They who hold a place upon the planet
Either above or below the earthen floor
Yet butterflies are caught up in the net
Why should this happen to one so pretty
Human instincts are oft' cruel and petty
Yet what about the humble bumble bees
That may provide honey to all who please
There is a reason within the season of gold
The riches from the earth so much ignored
And often have within the harvests of old
Either above or below this earthen floor
Creatures of earth we should not ignore
Given time`tis they who inherit the earth.

-----

Epic Scribe

Here lies within a scribe written in vain
Let there be seeds grown known to all
Man shall be nourished by natures grain
Let pastures be tilled for a future harvest
'Fore the frost may gather upon rich soil
Thus be plentiful for thee winter ahead
Stored to be kept within an old corn shed
Let there not be black spot that shall spoil
Thus shall be disastrous unto all as prone
What was once just a seed shall be again
Within a scribe writ upon flint and stone
Here shows blood and bone penned in vain
Man shall be nourished by natures grain
The good Lord know`s shall be of plenty.

-----

Feather Concerto

Soft as a feather he plays his violin
Though only within an inner fantasy
His dreams drift on but never to win
Living only for what his life employs
Yet sadly mistaken as an old vagrant
Living only upon a World of his own
Yet within fantasy he is never alone
What he craves for shall not be scant
His images may be often within pride
Within music he shall never be alone
Even if it was within a rhythm inside
Softly as a feather he plays his violin
His dreams drift on but never to win
For an inner rhythm cannot be heard.

The First Time

I stood before you for the very first time
Not knowing why we never met before
Yet I sensed we were on an upward climb
And that we shall forever yearn for more
I saw within your eyes a love I never knew
I knew then we were meant for each other
Love shall bind both hearts closer together
I knew then that this love we had was true
Feeling our way towards a sensitive touch
That our inner feelings shall not deprive of
Which may ever free inner passion as such
Yet I sensed we were on an upward climb
I stood before you for the very first time
Eyes reveal love within a depth of feeling.

-----

From Dusk To Dawn

One evening star shone brighter that normal
There was no others within the darkened sky
Except the moon within appearance as formal
There were bats upon a sky line fluttering by
Very often seen within a dark summers night
So attracted to insects that satisfies within
Beneath the moon, creatures shall forever win
When darkness falls and all may be lost in sight
Within emptiness of space that bears no wall
The creation of light where darkness had been
Within dawns pale light only then may see all
Except the moon within appearance as formal
One evening star shone brighter that normal
All shall fade away with dawns first light.

-----

His Words Live On

Within an ancient chapel in his tomb he rests
Why had life come to this when bliss was nigh
'Twas within prose that great literature invests
But cut down within his prime we wonder why
Does it have to be one within such significance
To compose words of love that melt the heart
This was never meant to be his time to depart
Though we knew then he may lose his stance
There shall never be such a poet as he had been
Blessed within deep emotional words he kissed
All the pretty maidens that beguiled him serene
Twas within prose that great literature invests
Within an ancient chapel in his tomb he rests
Midst his tomb he rests in peace ever missed.

Love Has No End (15 Lines)

If this world should crumble beneath us
May we pick ourselves up and start again
It may be the wiser never to make a fuss
Why should this world bring upon us pain
May it be us that inflicts this hurt within
Love shall never be cast as an eternal sin
Nor may malice prey upon the living dead
Life itself should become devoid of dread
Hence inflicted pain shall never be to win
Life itself was made to outlast all sorrow
Yet why does pain inflict us time after time
The answer may be there as ever tomorrow
It may be the wiser never to make a fuss
If this world should crumble beneath us.
Love is what makes this earth go around.

-----

Passing Of Seasons

The song of summer has passed us by
Whilst the orchestra of autumn lingers
Displaying the shades as all seasons sigh
Before the winters frost, bites the fingers
As it shall within winter we shall all feal
What we felt before was of winters glow
So silently falling as white flakes of snow
Yet some say it is wrong this cannot be real
For Spring time had only sprung yesterday
How the seasons enter and so swiftly go
Tis only a quarter past within natures way
Displaying the shades as all seasons sigh
The songs of summer have passed us by
Melting winters frosty snow to finalize.

-----

See. Speak. Nor Listen

I dare not speak of things unheard
For seeing only may be within belief
To quote likeways shall sound absurd
So much so it may only bring on grief
For time itself shall be within chance
When all things past may be forgotten
Love shall glow within those besotten
Believing then of a cherished romance
Which only both eyes of love shall see
Nothing shall hide nor mar their veiw
For what they have shall be ever free
To quote likeways shall sound absurd
I dare not speak of things unheard
Unless prying eyes shall see all too.

The Bird Flies

We stand in line, waiting our turn as one
By one we reach the ticket office door
And the rain pours down where there once was sun
The brollies open like never before
For the show will go on no matter what
They all want to see a diva perform
For the last time she will take them by storm
Her voice once more giving all she has got
For tonight is it; her very last show
After all her years of taking the stage
She is moving on; it is time to go
As the rain pours down where there once was sun
We stand in line, waiting our turn as one
She breaks free from fame that has been her cage
