#14 Petrarchan Sonnet

Of all the variations of the form we know as the sonnet today, the oldest is the Italian sonnet, also known as the Petrarchan sonnet, after its most famous user, Francesco Petrarca. Originally, it had no set structure and it was only after its adoption by the English that defined the Italian sonnet to consist of an octave, or 8-line stanza, which set up a situation, followed by a sestet, or 6-line stanza, which sets up a counter statement.
It was only much later that Wyatt and Spencer formalised it by the use of Iambic Pentameter. Here is an example by John Milton. Note: even though it has been anglicized it is still presented as a 14 line poem.

When I Consider How My Light Is Spent

When I consider how my light is spent
Ere half my days, in this dark world and wide,
And that one talent which is death to hide
Lodged with me useless, though my soul more bent
To serve therewith my Maker, and present
My true account, lest he returning chide;
"Doth God exact day-labor, light denied?"
I fondly ask; but Patience to prevent
That murmur, soon replies, "God doth not need
Either man's work or his own gifts; who best
Bear his mild yoke, they serve him best. His state
Is kingly. Thousands at his bidding speed
And post o'er land and ocean without rest:
They also serve who only stand and wait."

Cloud Wishing
Wish on a star to make your dreams come true,
That is what the experts have always said,
But I prefer to wish on clouds instead,
It's something that I've always liked to do;
Nicer when I am thinking thoughts of you,
And memories of you waltz through my head;
Like lambs they go wherever they are led,
Until I it's time to bid them all 'adieu.'
Sometimes I think I see your face up there,
Imagine that you're looking down at me;
But I know that it is only a game,
And before long you vanish in thin air.
If I had my way then you would still be
Close by to answer when I call your name.

-----

Promises
Come to me when your soul is serene, stilled,
And share your peace so I am tranquil too,
You know that I'll always be there for you;
And even when your heart is sorrow filled
When dreams have been destroyed and hope is killed
I'll soothe your troubled brow and help you through
It all; you know without a doubt that's true.
These promises I make will be fulfilled.
And in return I shall ask this one thing
To honour the trust I place willingly
In you; for without trust naught will survive.
But having it 'tween us then everything
Will fall in place; and that seed of love we
Planted, thus nurtured will blossom and thrive.

-----

Shubh Diwali
I'm placing deyas in my home tonight
To celebrate the feast of Diwali,
To pray the dark that shadows my country
Will be dispelled by the display of light;
Though symbolic I'm hoping that it might
Send a message to those who choose to see
That it is time this ever lasting night
Ends, so that once more we can walk freely.
Good conquers evil and we have to try
To live this message that is very clear,
And as we watch our island's youngsters die
We're duty bound to do something; to care.
Not enough just to look towards the sky,
Or live behind locked doors, cowered by fear.

-----

Woman Power
Woman don't cry, don't waste your precious tears,
Too many things in life to make us weep;
So many commitments we have to keep.
So often we're riddled with doubts and fears,
That's how it always has been through the years;
But we stood, took action when talk was cheap,
Though sometimes without looking we would leap;
Woman arise, we have crossed all frontiers.
Know that you hold the future in your arms,
Each little one a stake in things to come,
The sweet promise of a new tomorrow;
And as you nurture them, keep them from harm's
Way, you play a great role, the one of Mum;
From strength to greater strength may we all grow!

Adoro che cosa puo mai essere mine

I worship what can never be mine,
Nor possibly ever pass for what is a dream,
But she is real, and all that love may seem,
And so we will wait and bide our time.
Love is a silly state, where two fools align,
But fools are happiest within that scheme,
And happier still with each of fates extreme,
Ever satisfied whilst their souls entwine
Souls are easy guided by their loves eyes
Those windows betray what beats inside
For that flash, that sparkle, cannot be beat.
So for a while there are just temporary ties,
An aftermath of love that cannot be denied
With that belief find themselves complete.

-----

Black Widow

Have a drink my dear, nodding his head
She was so young and he so much older
So smooth, she loved the lies he told her
Lost in his smile, believing each line he fed
Feeling victory, he touched her bare shoulder
So confident as he led her slowly to the bed
Let me help you take off your clothes he said.
Grinning more as each touch became bolder.
She cried and cried and let him have his way
Her cries changed as she cried and cried again
Each climax each time the end justified the sin
Smiling knowing that in the end he would pay
With the dawn and last release he felt the pain
From her bite as her venom took life from him.

-----

Ecologies Bootprint

Once again we must weep for the Earth
Weep for the trees that no longer exist
Few really appreciate what they are worth
Too late will man realise what he has missed.
And no way restricting humanities birth.
Greedily thinking of the wealth of his fist
Not considering that he's creating a dearth
And despite strong objections still persists
Removing homes and food for those unlike he:
And whilst the Earth rebels in her way
In his ignorance he still fails to see
That sometime there will come a day
When the Earth will remove the debris
Then man will not be welcome to stay.

-----

Frustration

I worship what can never be mine,
Nor possibly ever pass for what is a dream,
But she is real, and all that love may seem,
And so we will wait and bide our time.
Love is a silly state, that could ne'r be a crime,
But loving fools are happiest in that state,
And are happier still when led by fate,
Ever satisfied whilst they hear souls chime.
Souls are easy guided by their lover's eyes,
Those windows betray what beats inside.
For that flash, that sparkle, cannot disguise,
An aftermath of love that cannot be denied.
So for a while there are just temporary ties,
And in that belief, other things are laid aside.

-----

Love Lingered

-----

Lust

My lover, why do you press yourself against me
Why do you tremble when I touch you so?
Your eyes wet and shine with an inner glow.
Such sighs and movements make my senses flee.
Too easy now I lose myself and become as thee
Consumed, aflame, as wit and reason quickly go
In their stead see a flame doth quickly grow
And I must taste thy nectar, for I am thy bee.
Whilst abed in congress will be such pleasure
Each night taken with licentious sport and plays
And with your body an altar on which to worship
We shall create memories on which to treasure
I promise our travails will include the days
From whence honeyed dew from you I'll sip.

-----

The Mists of Time

Somewhere in the mists of time I met you
We shared wine and bread together you and I
And the songs sang will echo through eternity
And now each life I wait until our rendezvous.
Each blessed meeting this life the days are few
Sharing wine and bread and song, being happy
Confident of a love that is more than certainty
But planned by fate, getting stronger as it grew
Once again somewhere in time we shall meet
We will break bread, and from the wineglass sup
And sing our songs and speak our love in rhyme.
We will move in time and feet will tap the beat
And life's wine shared, more tasty with each cup
Knowing we will meet again somewhere in time.

-----

Nature

All life and more is in Natures plan
It grows and forms and adapts to strife
This is the challenge Nature puts on life
The least of which should humble man.
Each plant mutates and has since it began
It lies dormant in sand, sleeping its life
Then when rain floods new shoot are rife
With the help of sun, see plant life's span
At last new life will emerge and show
After desert rains see life grow again.
Now is its time as the young shoots dart
In the worst conditions life will grow
The missing ingredient there is rain
Given every chance new life will start.

-----

No Mas De Amor

I believed you loved me for a while
But now I realise it was a stupid thought
Because I realise now, it was all for naught
And my thoughts now will not raise a smile.
When first we met my heart you did beguile.
But in reality, it was against all I'd been taught.
In retrospect, I deserved the pain I brought
Please excuse me whist I pause for awhile.
Too many times you were not interested
In what I said, or told you of my dreams,
Instead your mind seemed on another tack
Treating mine as junk, and as if I were dead.
I realised I was never party to your schemes
Now I have left realising there is no going back.

-----

Out of the Void

Out of the void my love has grown
A cosmic speck, the minutest grain
Finitely creating this heavenly domain
Truly out of nothing a seed was sown.
Not of wood, nor steel, nor brick or stone
No roof of tile that will shelter from maim
Made of love, that will protect we twain
And a pulsing heart, inside flesh and bone.
A celestial being that has won my soul
From timeless space you stole my heart
Now wishing to be with you all eternity
Two separate beings that have made a whole
That time or distance could never part
And my love, my life I dedicate to thee.

-----

Self Delusion

One fine day my dreams will come true
As my lover walks to me out of the mist,
And heaven will resound once we have kissed.
From that moment I will never again be blue
No heaven nor Earth just that one view
Shared ever, triggered by one sweet kiss.
And forevermore will be a time of bliss
Each night our vows of love we'll renew
Just two mature lovers wanting more
Yet what we seek is nothing really new
Reaching each fork along this new way
Each room with a window has a door
Sharing life seeing a different point of view
For even black is a lighter shade of grey.

-----

Submissive Souls

Behind your eyes I can see your soul,
And feel your suffering from the past.
I can see the shadows fading fast.
I will do my best to make you whole,
No longer am I here just to console,
But to build on something that will last.
Building a love that is unsurpassed.
Learning from each other as we stroll
To walk with you I see forever more
We'll take our time and enjoy our love
Building a love that will last eternally
A love that is better than any before
Two lovers united on our star above
And on that star will be just you and me.

-----

Unknowing

Rising up from sleep to greet another day
First thoughts of him, love swells like a tide
Starting morning wishing he was by her side
And wonders if he thought of her, in his way.
For just a brief few moments, her dreams array
Looking at her sad eyes, catching her lonely side
But thoughts of love, lift her they can't be denied
She also knows he loves and would not go astray.
Thoughts of how he held her, sharing the same bed
Then sadness, a brave goodbye, as he flew away
Pulling herself together she whispers out his name
Memories, so bitter sweet rush through her head
Music, wine, candlelight, making love at break of day
Unknowing many miles away he's feeling the same.

Values

I watch the white wispy clouds slowly appear
There is no promise of even one damp drop.
Give me one reason why I would wish to stop
Of the promised thunderstorm, there is no fear
The miracle happens, that would bring such cheer
But once again the forecasters have made a flop
And the promised storm brought nary a plop
Exactly as all the cynics thought another dry year.
Too little, too often we are promised some rains
Using committees instead of expert advice
With dams that are low and rivers gone dry
But never the right places only down city drains
Watching good farmlands die can never be nice
Then politicians play cover-up and spin another lie.

-----

Water Over Pebbles

Our love is easy like water over pebbles
The sound of love is like music to my ears
One word of love from you removes my cares
And yet your touch, so easy causes trembles.
That feeling does not cause anything that rebels,
Rather builds warm glowing feelings that years
Expand and store and much later happy tears
Result from remembering what each story tells.
The water flows over the pebbles slower now,
But still it flows and my feelings are no less
The music, "adagio moderato" not "presto allegro"
But nonetheless be assured my love still flows
And that in spite of time it is no less
Indeed with each passing day you can see it grow.

-----

Xtremes

Oh Love, doest thou know thy brother Hate?
Nay! Please realise that he remembers thee;
For no matter how ignorant thou dost be,
His knowledge of thee could never dissipate.
And shouldst thou seek, perchance, to expiate,
Or wish to make amends for past inclemency
Whilst thou art modest, forgiving in thy decency
He was never ever known to mitigate.
For in thy answer "Learn to turn the other cheek"
How can you love someone who has hurt again?
Sometimes it is that action that the cruellest seek out
Not to hate would seem by some to be weak
And so why then is it wrong to hide the pain
When to walk away would give them a clout.

-----

Zero Tolerance

On some days the moon doesn't rise where I live,
As earlier the sun refused to light up my skies.
In life's more tender and more gentle disguise
Dark offers much more than bright day can give.
But, darkness has always known I am alive
And what is love to some but a game of lies.
I walk with a black cloud covering my cries
Because in this darkness alone I survive.
Once again the sun has forgotten my needs
And at night the stars have run off somewhere
Perhaps playing with someone else's thought
And as if ashamed of their intolerant deeds.
Knowing that in the end it gets them nowhere
Childishly running off before they are caught.

Astralogical Fantasy

I shall be with you within my dreams
Upon a star within the vast universe
It is there that lovers shall converse
For eternal love may be all it seems
'Tis what togetherness really means
On a world of our own within reverse
Love may be relaxed but never terse
As of gentle rays of astral moon beams
Shall lead us on to fantasies unknown
A far away cry from planet Earth below
That may be a memory from the past
There is ever fear of a new dawn shown
A fear of the future that shall ever grow
For wars of the worlds may forever blast.

-----

Blessed Rebirth

Thou may bid farewell to thy maiden
For death shall cast a sacred bower
Within thy bounteous fading flower
Thy kiss goodbye is never forbidden
Upon autumns leaf of red and golden
Lain within a casket earth may devour
May this not be so upon her final hour
Within depths of earth down trodden
No love or embrace shall be returned
Within the depth of a cold dark tomb
She awaits for eternal life as bidden
The cold dark earth to be unchurned
Released from mother natures womb.

-----

Chemistry Of Love

The chemistry of love lies deep inside
There shall be no telling when or why
For affection shall not turn a blind eye
To those who walk together side by side
Their affection may not ever be denied
Shadows fade as temperatures run high
That loving look within a heart felt sigh
With a gentle touch so lovingly applied
Just a word of passion may ever release
Past before the future was only of lore
Time ahead shall be ours for the future
When a calm of hearts shall be of peace
Within gentle waves from shore to shore
It is then we know this love is for sure.

-----

Future Memories

I remember well when we had first met
I saw warmth of love within your eyes
And eyes within love shall tell no lies
Yet this I know I shall not ever forget
Upon a tender glow when stars had set
Ignorance may be bliss but also unwise
As it may only take two to compromise
For the joys of love may ever be preset
Unto a speedy beginning to a slow lane
It may be of harmony lovers like most
Whilst both may give as good as they get
Just one more fond kiss shall ever sustain
As limb and muscle grows stiff as a post
There remains life within the aged as yet.

-----

Jewels Of The Attic

Past history of old that shall ever cast
Shadow's of ancient books to behold
Scrolled on faded parchment untold
Of aged jewels composed from past
Which braved the light of day at last
Though print faded from new to old
May this be worth the weight in gold
Even if the time has passed by so fast
This may still be as much a treasure
As it was when 'twas first composed
But time shall change within the attic
As new and old shall never measure
For the old and new may be exposed
When Jewels of the attic remain static.

-----

Mamma Di Mi

A heart that is broken and cannot mend
Shall not ever beat to the rhythm of love
She who danced through a rainbow above
Shall only now have storm winds to fend
Which hurts so deeply she cannot pretend
When heartaches and sorrow interwove
Tears had flowed where her pain did rove
For her whose heart had been so forsaken
She shall never yearn to love yet another
Lessons taught shall be broken o`er again
For within the past she had been mistaken
Mishaps of before had been her defender
Within future too soon I forgot her pain.

-----

Muse From The Heart

Like ancient Greeks I pray to seek my muse
Hidden within veils of transparent thought
Yet within the present I oftimes forgot
For past words of fantasy I may not abuse
I only had my self that I should accuse
Within the power of dreams I sought
Love within my heart I forget nought
Within future I have much more to lose
Words off rhyme shall ever be transpired
Upon the blessed heart of an ancient poet
That within years ahead this shall ever be
Therein the power to be loved and desired
It shall only take hearts of love to know it
'Tis the muse of love that shall set all free.

-----

Rabbit Hutch Des Res

How shall this ever be a land of the free
When the cost of living amounts to much
Of gifts so beyond that we cannot touch
Where is the brains that shall never see
Life itself come's with no gaurantee
Of what ever chance may we have as such
May work out if we lived in a rabbit hutch
But it's only the rich that shall hold the key
Yet we may be free just to do as we please
No ties within that imprisons our freedom
There shall be no restrictions there within
For country charms are what we may seize
Tho' it be our very own practical Kingdom
Where there shall be no laws or discipline.

-----

Reclaimed Love

A chilly wind blew stronger my true love .
As I waited in vain upon the open moors
The mists upon the hillside view obscures
Wilder winds I shall not be tolerant of
Nor may I withstand the rains from above
Such catastrophy a poor maid endures
Now you shall know I am completely yours
I shall abide by you ever as hand in glove
Lest my love those winds may grow stronger
I shall ne-er be able to withstand the rain
This endurance I brave shall be no game
I beg of you this shall be for no longer
For my trust within thee I shall reclaim
Thy love for I may be much the fonder.

-----

A Sad Refrain

I feel the pain from strings of a violin
For sadness within cannot be spoken
Flowing tears were never of a token
Of a broken heart that festers within
Yet sadness reflects on a violin string
As the depth of love may ever be woken
For vows within shall never be broken
Never to hear the song which lovers sing
Nor even the slightest breeze shall sigh
For there is no comfort within to find
Only fates disillusion of the unknown
There shall be naught to do in the skies
Only what remains upon a restless wind
Where instincts are never to be shown.

-----

Softly Serene

If she should but lose her way of life
She may search the path of seclusion
That shall bar the road from intrusion
She the vagabond that seeks no strife
For an eye for an eye cuts like a knife
Singular thoughts became her illusion
Being alone with her final conclusion
She never wished to be a miners wife
May be why she walks the lanes alone
A vagabond who roams the county road
Seeking solace `midst meadows green
Contented peace she had never known
This was to be her newly found abode
She haunts the meadow`s softly serene.

The Vagabond

-----

Stranger Than Strange

An unusual cloud had covered the sky
Threatening all humanity`s existance
Abnoxious fumes from gases advance
The Gods may be angry the earth is dry
All humanity, wildlife, and plants shall die
Nothing upon the earth may stand a chance
Through thick clouds not a one shall glance
For the ending of the World may be nigh
Gases from outer space that are unbeknown
May take over the vast universe for evermore
All that may be left shall be blood and bone
Unless this was just a cloud ridden cyclone
That burned itself out within the sea shore
But whatever it was it may never be alone.

Unusual Clouds

-----

Tapestry Of Rhyme

Dreams come true as love shall not tether
Just one gentle touch may spark off a fuse
What the heck have they both got to lose
When they both shall agree to endeavour
That may only result within much pleasure
With not many moments to pick or to chose
This being a chance they dare not refuse
What they feel inside may be there forever
The clock within shall but speedily chime
Time within itself shall await for no man
And all shall be lost before love is found
All because minutes had run out of time
Which takes us back to number one plan
When love was ever a tapestry of rhyme.

-----

Weep Not For Love

I weep for love that has been forsaken
The sadness of tears shall be ever near
For the love in my heart I held so dear
When all the time I had been mistaken
Since woeful tears had left me shaken
Love shall not ever be mine I shall fear
For me the song of love shall be severe
My very heart, soul, of maideness taken
I shall never be as pure as I forever was
Woeful is me when my heart may break
Trust was not to be upon a losers mind
For I had broken all of the chastity laws
Not knowing that true love may be a fake
Uncertainty of a future may never bind.

Life
Italian Octave and Sestet

Traveled over the worlds greatest mountains
Marveled at many countless flowered fields
Amazed when the decisions were revealed,
For surviving immoral human strains
Suffered from painful wars raging insane
Blamed and damned by critics words unsealed
Released from foolish lustful visual fields
Where lusting spread infectious vast filled pain
Sitting bare naked on stone to the bones
Useless I be on earth; death becomes me
Stilled within humans blood-spattered waters
Farewell to Earths lashing, roaring cyclones
Free I'll be from distractive rotting sprees
Heaven bound where peaceful loving concurs.

Changing Seasons

Spring took her leave last month, she said goodbye
As Summer made her entrance on the stage,
Cajoling trees to form a green leaved cage;
While brilliant Sun played spotlight in the sky.
Within trees' branches shade, heat passed me by,
I watched my garden turn last season's page;
Each day new flowers, freed from buds, assuaged.
Spring's rainy tears once gone, bore Summer's cry.
As days grew long and evening light stayed late,
We took our meals outside, enjoyed the birds.
They were not scared by our being there,
Just kept on feeding as we filled our plates.
In friendly coexistence without words
We ate; and men and birds all got their share.
