#25 Winter Winds

The theme is the season of winter. The season of cosy fires burning in the hearth, hot soups and melt in the mouth stews and casseroles while flurries of snow fall outside, or strolling round the winter markets with a mug of steaming hot chocolate or even warming mulled wine. Can we capture that magic of winter in verse?

Quote - Let us love winter, for it is the spring of genius - Pietro Aretino

The Cold Earth Slept Below

The cold earth slept below;
. . . . .Above the cold sky shone;
. . . . . . ..And all around,
. . . . . . ..With a chilling sound,
From caves of ice and fields of snow
The breath of night like death did flow
. . . . . . ..Beneath the sinking moon.

The wintry hedge was black;
. . . . .The green grass was not seen;
. . . . . . ..The birds did rest
. . . . . . ..On the bare thorn's breast,
Whose roots, beside the pathway track,
Had bound their folds o'er many a crack
. . . . . . ..Which the frost had made between.

Thine eyes glow'd in the glare
. . . . .Of the moon's dying light;
. . . . . . ..As a fen-fire's beam
. . . . . . ..On a sluggish stream
Gleams dimly-so the moon shone there,
And it yellow'd the strings of thy tangled hair,
. . . . . . ..that shook in the wind of night.

The moon made thy lips pale, beloved;
. . . . . .The wined made thy bosom chill;
. . . . . . ..The night did shed
. . . . . . ..On thy dear head
Its frozen dew, and thou didst lie
Where the bitter breath of the naked sky
. . . . . . ..Might visit thee at will.

Percy Bysshe Shelley

A Time of Rest

All plants are bare not at their best
For now it is a time of rest.

Beneath the earth asleep and still
The kernals of trees lie at rest

Bulbs and seed await natures will
With other forms of life at rest

The earth’s energy needs to refill
The fields lie fallow and at rest

Work is done at the water mill
The miller too must have his rest

Foggy Windows

Let me tell you about the way I feel
About you and how I’m missing you
Looking out of the window we have misted with our love
Yet you are not there and still the windows mist up
Then I realise that the mist is in my eyes
Salty tears reminding me of days and nights
Spent laughing and happily fogging windows
I know reading this your windows will mist also
Eyes already wet will fog in absence
The time will go slowly, each minute an hour
And when we meet again the time will fly to fast
So fast that each hour will pass like a minute
As if to make up for the time lost whilst apart
And once again look out through foggy windows

Mists Of Time - Rebirth

Once I was lost in the mist of time
when ancient battles ruled sublime
I had lost you so far within my sight
within a dense confusion of reality
our globe had almost lost all gravity
though`mists of time could not see
yet I felt that you were close to me
within the universe beamed a light
that was the golden sword from afar
from an angel of mercy upon the star
pointing the way to an eternity blest
within affinity we may find this crest
an everlasting sword of middle earth
predicts future signs of loves rebirth.

Winters Diary

The autumn winds have been and gone
so much darker now the winters dawn
to herald the morning with bitter chills
that grasps all within the wintery hold
when icy fingers touch as bitter cold
deep the snow flakes shall cover earth
casting shadows of the winters rebirth
yet mystical icy pendants of finer skill
shall ever warm the heart of a maiden
warm devotion was all she had bidden
when icy fingers grasp a maidens sigh
upon bitter winds and frost ne-er go I
yet there is beauty for us all to share
but may quickly strip this forest bare.

Winter Winds

The golden hues are fading in to grey
As icy winds reveal a winter's day
No leaves remain to dance upon the air
Instead the feet feel bitter morning frost
Against the wind the woollen scarves are tossed
But inside my love has set a roaring fire
That warms my soul and with his heart's desire
I face the cold of night without a care
With wistful dreamings of his gentle kiss
And mugs of sweet mulled wine steaming with bliss
The winter winds may bring the chilly cold
And leave an empty view for all to see
Yet I know his hand is always mine to hold
As it is love that shelters him and me
