#06 German Sonnet

The German Sonnet was obviously influenced by the Italian sonnet. Although Goethe normally followed the Italian Sonnet when writing his sonnets, it's believed that on his death his poetry colleagues constructed the German Sonnet as a tribute him. It has a similar octave pattern although the two quatrains have different rhyme scheme to the Italain. Similarly the sestet comprises two tercets and again a different rhyme scheme.
Here are the parameters;

Here is an example.

Meine Liebe

For you my love I compose this verse
With words within I wish you to know
'fore my quill shall halt to evenly flow
Upon rhymes of love l now converse
I see in your eyes a love that is true
Which reflects inner passion unto mine
Expressing deep within this love divine
So softly spoken for me and for you.
Both loving hearts shall ever entwine
What we both have is forever to be
Emotions within shall always be free
No sweeter fruits grown upon a vine
Than a love that grew from you to me
To display what only our eyes can see.

Drought in the Mountains

Early morning autumn clouds mist the mountains
All to soon the rising sun will burn them away
And black and brown replace the mysterious grey
Bereft now of glistening streams and fountains.
For rain and more we're all starting to pray
The Shaman calls forth the spirits of the rain
Awake from your dreamtime see your work again
Look down see the scree contrast with cracked clay.
What was lush and green is nought now save pain
Beautiful mountain flowers are all dead and gone
Lavender bushes and their like, there's nary a one.
The Shamans pleas were unheard, and all in vain
But were they wasted, were they heard by no-one,
Will sometime their wishes be finally done?

Gambler

Our lives and love are just like a card game
All hoping that fate will deal us out a hand
All hoping fervently for a love so grand
Each time a new card, each chance is not the same
You have 16 to show, do you draw or stand?
The lights are dim, the Ace of hearts your wish
Then one more ace you feel so much anguish
Four cards now you are holding in your hand
The card you want more than three will finish
Is fate being cruel? A single ace within the frame
Our lives and love are just like a card game
You buy a card, dare to look. feeling so foolish
Any card above a three and you are aflame
You can bust, but today love is your claim.

-----

Intermission

It is not the end, just because we have to part
Rather it is the intermission, merely a pause
And with parting is seen to be the close
Just like everything that concerns the heart.
"What of the seasons?" is the question I pose
And I say that love is not dead nor can it be
Again it would appear bleak for us to see
Suddenly winter has struck that is the cause.
We know what we have sown we will agree
Just as it is now and in other times now past
We have the proof that what we have will last.
There is no doubt now as we both now decree
Realising completely our love will simply outlast
Everything, our parts in love are very well cast.

-----

Kite

We were so close you and I sharing so much.
Then I made a mistake and I made you cry
You made me pay, you took away my sky
Every now and again I felt your tentative touch.
Like a kite caught in the wind, I began to fly
Telling me you love me again my spirit soared
Then you let me go and again I was floored
Crashing to the ground, wanting like mad to die.
I picked up the pieces, and like a fool I waited
For another gust of wind to take me aloft
Each time I crashed, no landing was soft
Blindly hoping that your anger had abated
This time, I prayed that you would let me off
Am I a bloody fool, yet I hear no scoff?

-----

Life's Stage

The curtain raises and our two lovers meet
In time they realize how special they are
Predestined souls who share the same star
One they have shared without any conceit.
In act two passion takes control, for a heart beat
But in time the flames have a more gentle flow
And the coals burn with a constant glow
New fuel replaces old but with a steady heat.
Now it is act three, the stage light comes low
The words are so much more familiar now
Our two actors sure of what their love allows
After lifetimes together the stage is still aglow
The curtain falls, the stage is dark somehow
The stage lights and they take their final bow.

-----

Our Dance

In time our bodies will unite the same
We will share things as we did before
And in the end, will find love is more
From the joys of love we will n'er abstain.
The wheel of the cosmos we will explore
Knowing our lives are perfect and a circle
In some lives the rings becomes a portal
We can't predict, understand or ask for.
We meet for such a short time being mortal
Always loving and sharing so many things.
Your dreams are they of me and our wings?
In a time and place where all love is central
Where love is perfect and a dream springs
No such place exists for normal beings.

Perhaps that's our lesson in this life to learn.
The final carrot offered to all mortals like us
Sitting near warm winter fires to discuss
What can we two expect of love and dicern.
Looking out on a cold white view is our plus
Is it all a feeling with nothing more to it
Where sated, we can walk away and forget
Or is it something where we can always trust?
We will follow the lives that Fate has preset
Looking for each other to love and pair
We will live a live that others dream to dare.
It cannot be a feeling for nothing, no debt
Instead it will be a dance, a pas de deux
And with each life we'll be waiting there.

-----

Questions of Us

And how must we greet this morn
I came to you because of my dreams
Are you part of my fates schemes
Will my dreams now fit the dawn?
You now walk with me on my road
Or is it just our lives have crossed?
Two boats met on life's ocean tossed
Lets join together and share our load.
Knowing this life has many loves lost
Towards Nirvana together we're drawn
We're higher in the game than pawns
I'm so confident now what e'r the cost
Lovingly smiling as we greet the morn
Realising our dreams now fit the dawn!

-----

To Learn to Love

To learn to love, you must first learn to cry
Our bodies and minds conditioned like sheep
Must show no emotion no matter how deep
Offer your heart before love says goodbye.
For too long now, my heart has been asleep
But now there is tears my heart is open again.
Not tears or sobs of a heart wrenched in pain
But slowly through joy, I'm learning to weep.
At last it's become the time for me to be sane
I have looked in your eyes and I see your tears
You have held it inside you for all these years.
Anger and frustration from inside your brain
Here beside you I kiss you as pain disappears
I hold you and kiss you, removing your fears.

-----

Unison

Our souls in many lives have joined
Even though now we are worlds apart.
We think of distance's only on a chart
And now we realise, that we're conjoined.
Our lives have been joined from the start
It was so ordained by fate in Heaven above.
You are my soul mate, and forever my love
We share our lives, our tasks, each heart.
Must I always wear this protective glove
You know I have spent my life searching
So many centuries seeing my heart burning.
Rest assured as we learn also to dispose of
Feelings that ever prevent us from knowing
In the end, bodies also will be converging.

-----

Xamples

Look there see a ragged kid with a snotty nose
Standing, clutching his life in an old black bag
Quite naturally feeling that life's always a drag
Instead we must ignore what we presuppose.
Teenage kid with challenges, too busy to brag
Feeling that life is much more certain now
Studying hard learning to handle changes somehow
brushes hair away from brow he's starting to flag.
Now the father, who's blessed with a snotty kid
Is buying his son a new black bag for show
He has changed but not forgotten to allow
In spite of poverty the fashionable things he did
In remembering he never followed follow
Like father, like son, he will never wallow.

-----

Your Wings

Your wings have touched my heart so clever
I have known you so short a time, yet I'm sure
I have known you all my life and many more
In truth I know our lives are bonded forever.
Life's circles have touched us without a cure
They continue and from time to time we part
We know now our life and love will just start
We'll meet and our wings will touch for sure.
Next time, surely we'll again be heart to heart
The wheels that control our destiny will mesh
They'll bring us ever closer together in the flesh.
I know the wheel slows down but again will start
The circle narrows more but in time will refresh
Until at last our lives will eternally enmesh.

Tales From My Toybox

Alone With My Toybox

Silent tears are falling down my face
A place of solitude with so much around.
Yet who would know just by the sound
There is no one to understand my place?
There is a sound of silence that can be found
But in my toybox there's only a sense of loss
No fancy verbiage could ever hope to gloss
Heart barely beating love's gone to ground.
The beings there all lie sentient now not cross
Still aware and alive and they still have form
For what is memory but a previous norm?
Uncared for, ignored, and never been dross
It takes but two thoughts to break this storm,
Thoughts the same where two minds conform.

-----

Back To My Toybox

It's time; the last few days have been a blur
I go to my toybox and wipe off the dust
To ignore those memories would be unjust,
When I can't put aside my memories of her.
I took her for granted, we never discussed
Only now admitting that I had been remiss.
Seriously she not to blame for any of this
I kept my feelings hidden was stupid, unjust.
Pride was the reason why I was party-pris
But pride is not for men only stupid fools
I admit to you I’ve broken all of loves rules.
I need help so I can climb out of this abyss,
And it takes a man to cast away his pride.
My heart wishing eternally with her abide.

-----

My Toybox At First

There was a time when my Toybox was all
In there was Kanga, Wambi, and Dingo, my pals,
How often before bed did we sail down canals
Whilst above us was Owli, the clock on the wall.
When I was young I'd to talk to Owli all night
With the others we’d get into a terrible maul
Then in the deepest danger we'd hear his call
He'd sit and listen and help, make things right.
Together we'd escape from each dangerous brawl
Then much later brag about what fun we'd had
But who had saved us was Owli being our dad
He just sat there, listening, saying nothing at all
But we knew who had saved us from things bad
We'd never given him any credit, and that's sad.

After A Storm

Why may a lonely child pray for affection
Cast aside as an orphan and devoid of love
Shall her prayers be answered from above
May she no longer face another rejection
Sad it may be her dreams remain thereof
An unwanted child shall forever be ignored
That was never the fault of her own accord
Love within her life had been neglectful of
Shall there be another path to be explored
Someone out there that may adopt this child
A helpless child shall be thought as reviled
Just as she was to be cherished and adored
A loveless child that is forever so beguiled
May soften the heart whenever she smiled.

Infant In Prayer - Joshua Reynolds

-----

Back From Extinction

I think that I have been here before
Far too many lives have passed me by
And my clear memories shall not defy
What I may experience of a past lore
This remains true but I don`t know why
I have seen dinosaurs roaming the land
A long time 'fore the earth was manned
When strange creatures skimmed the sky
I found it very difficult to understand
But I would never ever come in between
That great herd of beasts that I had seen
For Eons on I would return to this land
To revisit a past where I had once been
When all had perished remained serene.

-----

Bardic Love

They climb both together a mountain high
Higher than the land they had left belo
Where the winds of nature shall ever blow
Casting of spells that lovers may not deny
Mystic songs from his Lire that gently flow
Creating harmony that flows amidst words
As he plucks the strings within vocal chords
This serenade of love shall forever bestow
Such tenderness shall entice love onwards
Thus shall display within his bardic palm
For his instinct therein shall only be calm
A pledge of love that may nurture rewards
Within a lyrical bard that gently embalms
Upon mystic myths within mountain realms.

-----

Cumbrian Hills

Softly green are the contours of hills
Where the falls of the Cumbrian flows
Downwards towards the valleys below
Pastures devoid of cold winter chills.
Those who reside there shall ever know
Of the peace within the valleys serene
Captured forever in a picturesque scene
Of beauty therein the Cumbrian shows
Remains a treasure to all who hath seen
That within memory may ne-er go amiss
What nature befalls is nought but bliss
Of morning dew through a hazy screen
Contours of the hills shall forever exist
Softly green through the dawning mist.

-----

Deprived of Love

Why may a lonely child pray for affection
Cast aside as an orphan and devoid of love
Shall her prayers be answered from above
May she no longer face another rejection
Sad it may be her dreams remain thereof
An unwanted child shall forever be ignored
That was never the fault of her own accord
Love within her life had been neglectful of
Shall there be another path to be explored
Someone out there that may adopt this child
A helpless child shall be thought as reviled
Just as she was to be cherished and adored
A loveless child that is forever so beguiled
May soften the heart whenever she smiled.

-----

I Stand Alone

So sad are the tears that silenty weep
Deep within heartaches mean sorrow
For I need another lifetime to borrow
Precious memories shall not ever reap
May these moments return the morrow
Casting aside all heartache and pain
Or may I never hear sweet loves refrain
Nor feel the passion only lovers know
Shall I never dry those sad tears again
Yet those memories are forever there
It may only take one and other to share
A most precious stroll down memory lane
To remind each other we were a pair
Yet now I stand alone within prayer.

-----

Lovers Tryst

Cast within a spell of infinate ecstasy
Held in a trance within powers divine
Within our tryst of love both entwine
Inner passion of loves eternal fantasy
Instinctive touch of pleasures combine
Of sensual feelings that speak of love
An out of body experience from above
That may enter within a spiritual shrine
Together we shall make the earth move
Only to return once more within divinity
Premonitions once more of loves virility
That only spiritual lovers may ever prove
To return again with much more capability
A tryst of love shall move earths gravity.

-----

Old Jim Crow

Whatever has happened to old Jim Crow
I never have seen him four seasons long
There must be something awfully wrong
It is not like him to just fly off and go
He cannot just forget where he belongs
It shall never be the same with out him
There shall never be any other like Jim
For so proud was he but very headstrong
He would not go missing upon a whim
Not if he can ever help himself that is
For the forest was more than part of his
Why ever then should he go out on a limb
Has he found himself a mate of such bliss
Come back Jim Crow `tis you I shall miss.

-----

Poetic Embrace

Word of love composed within a scroll
Sealed passionately with a loving kiss
Of times passed when a touch was bliss
Inner feelings were much of self control
If they never loved they may never miss
The joys of love should never be spoken
A pledge of chastity may not be broken
Only within dreams they shall reminisce
For true love should be much of a token
That remains for ever within their heart
Never to be broken nor be shaken apart
When a spell of eternal love has awoken
Words upon scroll remain a work of art
That discrimination shall ne-er impart.

-----

Practical Luxury

Break of dawn she awakens from sleep
Tho' tired and weary from day's afore
Life was not easy within days of yore
This poor maiden who worked her keep
Cobbled streets she trudged and bore
A wicker basket yields the daily vitals
Thus was a young maids morning ritual
Cast aside she may slave for ever more
Upon days of yore hard times so factual
When pence may not buy a loaf of bread
Poverty of the poor was only a thread
Trudging on trying to being practical
'Tis a hard days reckoning to be said
When glory shall be the luxury of bed.

-----

Safety Pin Invention

Why an umbrella in an april shower
Torrential rain shall for ever master
March winds which may cause disaster
As a ladies vanity may soon deflower
The weather is like a roller coaster
Wild the months within a seasons spin
'Tis why they invented the safety pin
Which had saved the day's thereafter
When winds blow high winds blow free
Cast thine eyes to the old weather vane
For old ways shall not addle the brain
There is no warning what man shall see
To drive his unsuspected mind insane
For his lady being a lady may refrain.

-----

Spirits Return

Spirits shall flow from the stars above
A presence of warmth shall lovers feel
Harmonious pleasures hearts may seal
Shall only be within the divinity of love.
When inward passions shall then reveal
All that there may be within loving eyes
It may be then that feelings compromise
For together they value the same appeal
Spirits of the past shall return from skies
Reunion of infinity that lovers shall bless
Never again shall this love e-er suppress
When loving spirits shall once again arise
Back from affinity within heavenly caress
Where eternal lovers shall never transgress.

-----

To Be, Or Not To Be

I am not exactly the pick of the crop
When it comes to Byron and Keats
I hide my head beneath the sheets
Of Poetic stance I shall gladly swap
Shakespeare I would love to meet
If I could only go back within time
Casting a spell to inherit his rhyme
Or may it be Poe I pledge to greet
This upward hill I struggle and strive
But if I ever could reach my vocation
That may lend me so much inovation
But God only knows if I only survive
To be a poet shall be much salvation
Amidst the masters of fine creations.
