2013 Poetry Form Challenge

#19 Envelope Couplets

The Envelope couplet is a far stricter variation of the Stave Stanza, here the first and last line use the same refrain which starts and completes the stanzas of that poem. The second and fifth line of each stanza rhyme with the refrain lines. This leaves only the centre couplet to change its rhyme. The pattern for a three stanza work would be:
A1. a. b. b. a. A2.... A1. a. c. c. a. A2.... A1. a. d. d. a. A2....
The Night Is Dark

The night is dark and you're alone.
In fear you hear the night beasts moan
See the shadows move on the wall
Spine chilling as the white wolves call
In fear you cringe as beasties groan
The night is dark and you're alone.

The night is dark and you're alone.
Too late now courage is overthrown
And evil wagers for your soul
His creatures waiting for his call
With slavering jaws that can crush bone
The night is dark and you're alone.

The night is dark and you're alone.
In terror you reach for the phone
The phone is dead the line is down
Isolated from any town
You are reaping what you have sown
The night is dark and you're alone.

Terry Clitheroe
As a variation to this form and still using the same stanza rule but changing the repeat line, for each stanza, the pattern for a three stanza work would be:
A1. a. b. b. a. A1.... C1. c. d. d. c. C1.... E1. e. f. f. e. E1....

Carnival Fever

Its carnival in Trinidad
The people are 'getting on bad'
Time for pan, calypso and brass,
Man, woman and child 'playing 'mas'
Party hearty, time to be glad...
It's carnival in Trinidad.

It's carnival in Trinidad,
And it seems everyone's a tad
Crazy; it's just a passing phase
That will last only a few days,
It's not that we have all gone mad
It's carnival in Trinidad.

It's carnival in Trinidad,
It's no time to be feeling sad,
The whole island is on fire,
With folks wearing chic attire,
Whilst some are outrageously clad;
It's carnival in Trinidad.

It's carnival in Trinidad,
Before I forget let me add
It's a show that's beyond compare,
You'd understand if you were here,
I can guarantee that it's 'rad'!
It's carnival in Trinidad.

Cats a Fact

Like a breeze you pass by to mesmerize
With your yellow, green, blue or purple eyes,
Sometimes a wheeze is what you may give me
But I've never failed to beckon you to my knee
Because I like how fur tickles away sighs,
Like a breeze you pass by to mesmerize.

Spiritless

Apathy is like a disease of thought
It becomes its own melancholic drought
A circle without anywhere to go
But down the rabbit hole to depressions low
Low estate, as esteem crumbles a lot
Apathy is like a disease of thought.

-----

Used to Be

There used to be joy in the morning
And once every breath was sun shining,
Moon glow waiting for twilights end
To meet more of her special friend,
The Andromeda to match astral wings,
There used to be joy in the morning.

As Rain Descends

As rain descends from a sombre cloud
Hear it falling like an angry football crowd
And from the grey morning as we arise
In the drought catching us all by surprise.
Half light now lights a land once proud
As rain descends from a sombre cloud.

As rain descends from a sombre cloud
Dragging it o'er, helping suns demise
Meanwhile birds sit quietly in their nests
Mother hens clutching chicks to their breasts
A strong wind picks up the grey shroud
As rain descends from a sombre cloud.

Assumptions Makes Asses

I never meant to push you away,
I just couldn't be here every day
I never meant to ignore you
Or take a contrary point of view
I thought you didn't want me to stay.
I never meant to push you away.

I never meant to push you away,
You didn't call me and say g'day
So I assumed that we were through
Making an ass out of me and you
I now understand it wasn't that way
I never meant to push you away.

-----

Coals of Love

I am the smith and our love is the fire
Kissing stirs the coals and makes the flames higher
There are times when the heat becomes white hot
What it heats is oftimes placed in a tempering pot.
This often causes me to heavily perspire
I am the smith and our love is the fire.

I am the smith and our love is the fire
A love that always gives us all that we require
Even when tamped there is still that warm glow
That leaves a feeling others vainly seek to know.
What we have, others work hard at to aspire
I am the smith and our love is the fire.

-----

Essence of Correctness

Am I wrong, wanting my idyllic dream,
Of times when things were as they seem,
When no one needed to deny their eyes
And nothing they felt was really a surprise
When water was what filled any stream
Am I wrong wanting my idyllic dream?

Am I wrong wanting my idyllic dream
When our only fear was a movies scream.
Manners ruled and men opened doors
And comedians never used swearwords,
So learn to enjoy the day, "Carpe Diem"
Am I wrong wanting my idyllic dream?

Am I wrong wanting my idyllic dream
I can assure you there's no other scheme
When children played more simple games
And again there were more simple aims
Let's go out and together enjoy an ice cream
Am I wrong wanting my idyllic dream?

It's So Easy

It's so easy to be in love with you
With each second my love grew
Now destiny has made you mine
Even for so very short a time
Loving, with a love oh so true
It's so easy to be in love with you.

It's so easy to be in love with you'
The love of you I will never rue
Now our love has grown so fine
The Gods gift to us a love divine.
This eternal gift of love so true
It's so easy to be in love with you.

-----

Just Memories

The magic is growing as spring draws to a close,
What will happen then only heaven knows?
Remembering beach walks along virgin sands.
Smiling, walking with my love holding hands.
Feeling warm sand sneak in between my toes
The magic is growing as spring draws to a close.

The magic is growing as spring draws to a close,
Soon I will have to change to warmer clothes.
With evening return to a summer memory
As darkening skies looked on in testimony
It'll be the same again next year I suppose
The magic is growing as spring draws to a close.

The magic is growing as spring draws to a close,
It is not leaving merely having a short repose.
I believe the magic will never leave this place
It is simply Mother Nature showing her grace,
And allowing us to see some alternative shows.
The magic is growing as spring draws to a close.

Lady and Knight

Who were we, when we danced last night,
Dancing and romancing well unto dawns light
It was not the first time, nor will it be the last
It will be our future, as it has been our past
You are my Queen, my lady, I am your knight
Who were we, when we danced last night?

Monday Bloody Monday

I hate Mondays; do you want to know why?
Well, I was hoping you knew that already.
Sunday is when you really hate Monday
Question is, do I hate Monday or Sunday,
Just a thought perhaps I'll give that a try.
I hate Mondays; do you want to know why?

But Monday is after Sunday you may recall,
And what if it were Tuesday that would fall?
Then you might hate it, not Monday instead
Then Monday would not be the day of dread
That day called Tuesday would now appal,
But Monday is after Sunday you may recall.

And Wednesday might not be so innocent
No longer the middle of the week we bent.
If t'were switched and became the day of rest
Wednesday would become the day you like best.
Then Thursday would be your hatreds intent,
And Wednesday might not be so innocent.

Should we leave Friday and Saturday alone
If we do some bloody whingers bound to moan.
So there we have it keep it or change the week
The present one is dated from times antique.
Whatever we do is bound to raise a moan,
So we should leave Friday and Saturday alone?

Only in Death

Only in death can a body be perfect
No more wrinkles do we need detect?
No earthly body can live forever
Zombies, mummies shall envy ever
There's no need of mirrors to inspect
Only in death can a body be perfect.

Only in death can a body be perfect
Death is death no matter how its checked
Instead there's corruption of the flesh
And with the sod the corpse will mesh.
Each day, each change, each mood, affect.
Only in death can a body be perfect.

Only in death can a body be perfect
When the tomb will become the creche
See how sod and body blend well together
Was created from sod in Deitic fervour
And each night rise corrupt and fresh.
For only in death can a body be perfect.

Pan's Magic

The piper plays, then to each a part allots
In staying back we're tied in tender knots.
He lingers awhile but not reluctantly so
It is free to you and I, to come or go
It's just one of his more tender plots
The piper plays, then to each a part allots.

The piper plays, then to each a part allots
He's the director the one who calls the shots.
Feeling trembles when we kiss this way
With looks that bid each other to stay.
Music has stirred the feeling in our roots
The piper plays, then to each a part allots.

Rain (Fat Chance)

It's spring once the time of the stretch of grey
Where broken farmers hire special men to pray.
A time of tears for Heaven, and wet thoughts
Belie another week more of rainfall naughts
The cooler night replaced by a hot sunny day
It's spring once the time of the stretch of grey.

It's spring once the time of the stretch of grey
Once careful strides avoided where puddles lay
Autumn greens not seen, still remaining brown.
Broken farmers forced to move to town
Because sunburnt crops cannot pay their way
It's spring once the time of the stretch of grey.

It's spring once the time of the stretch of grey
See northern cities flood causing much dismay
Now a day of rain has become a time of praise
Occasional splattered window on grey days
Soil too dry, starting to look like Saharan decay
It's spring once the time of the stretch of grey.

-----

Tomorrow

Tomorrow is just another day
Do not think that you can lay
In ease and wait the sun's caress
Whilst it heralds morn and dress
The dawn with hued colour play
Tomorrow is just another day

Tomorrow is just another day
The gentle winds of morn makes sway
And autumn breezes scent the air
Playing with the walkers hair
If time froze would we wish to stay,
Tomorrow is just another day

Tomorrow is just another day
And with evening its time for play
And talk of love and better things
Then to sleep see what morning brings
The lights go out and shadows stay
Tomorrow is just another day

Value of Love

Love alters not by time in months or years,
Through eternity, there's no longer fears.
In time love becomes a melding of souls,
Able to abandon all worldly controls.
Time only mellows gentleness appears.
Love alters not by time in months or years.

Love alters not by time in months or years,
Trusting in each other, all doubt disappears.
Lies no better than wormed or rotting wood,
Nothing could ever be honest or good
Every loving couple become pioneers
Love alters not by time in months or years.

Wind Thoughts

First Thought

Kiss flavoured winds are my thoughts
Over mounds of passion wisely bought
Flesh draped so subtle yet so easy I find
Lips brushing skin, naked in my mind
And giving flesh a form in pastel strokes
Kiss flavoured winds are my thoughts.

Second Thought

Winds off an ocean that whispers and calls
Guitar strum sounds echoes from walls
Matching heartbeats with sensing ends
Embracing thighs whilst making friends
Movements touches and sounds enthralls
Winds off an ocean that whispers and calls.

XXXXXXX

How many kisses tell you I love you
Please tell me or give me some clues
I pray my eyes may also betray me
I feel them light up when I see thee
Falling for you was a complete coup
How many kisses tell you I love you?

How many kisses tell you I love you
When close together your never a shrew
Your eyes light up when e'r close to me
Snuggling closer where you should be
I now know we've created one from two.
How many kisses tell you I love you?

Yesterdays Dreams

As I watch a leaf whilst sat under a tree
The wind is causing it to dance with glee
Pirouetting in the air like a ballet dancer
Possessed by the wind who's a necromancer
Imagination given reign to an un-mystery
As I watch a leaf whilst sat under a tree.

As I watch a leaf whilst sat under a tree
Yesterdays dreams seem to blow from me
Tomorrows like the leaf are still up in the air
And yet now I'm free, no longer do I care
No longer do I worry about uncertainty
As I watch a leaf whilst sat under a tree.

Zen Conversation

The dark abyss of a soul is not vacant
Just undiscovered waiting and patient
For the hidden secrets waiting therein
That are to be found by searching within
Nor is there a need for you to be silent
The dark abyss of a soul is not vacant.

Within your soul, karma leaves its mark
Looking with eyes that see in the dark
Listening with ears that hear in the silence
Using senses that were created by patience.
Awareness comes with the gentlest spark
Within your soul, karma leaves its mark.

Angels Of Life

There is a time to laugh a time to weep
A time to rejoice or a moment to sleep
When the angels of life pledge the mood
Love maybe only what misgiving should
When love and heartaches forever keep
There is a time to laugh a time to weep.

There is a time to laugh a time to weep
Memories sweet both hearts may reap
Sunshine may follow where ever they go
Before the frost and bitterness of snow
Still the angels of life may forecast deep
There is a time to laugh a time to weep.

Cardinals Daughter

When a lady is a lady genteel and so demure
No lord could dissuade her from being pure
But he being wordly of loves endearing charm
Thought maybe a gentle kiss may do no harm
He dare not master in any away pride to cure
When a lady is a lady genteel and so demure.

Her father was a Cardinal of the written word
To take advantage of his daughter was absurd
Plus his pride and honour had to be kept intact
If a lady has to be a lady she must not over act
This final act of love for now must be deterred
Her father was a Cardinal of the written word.

Country Charms

To contemplate deep by the village stream
Upon lazy hazy days engrossed in a dream
Within rippling water that gurgles and flows
O'er pebbles and reeds as a breeze blows
How peaceful natural surroundings seem
To contemplate deep by the village stream.

Such peaceful moments to relax the mind
Deeply engrossed within a meditating kind
The old village stream bears country charms
Held dearly within mother of natures arms
This haven of senses shalt be easy to find
Such peaceful moments to relax the mind.

Depth Of The Ocean

Oh come ye gentle breeze from the ocean
Touching softly with waves of warm devotion
Feeling the pulse of passion from the deep,
Where strong flowing currents doth not sleep,
And awakens thus sincere hearts emotion
Oh come ye gentle breeze from the ocean,

Oh come ye now lost spirits of the night
Shalt thou not return from dark into light,
Feel again the warmth of thy lovers arm
To adore, cherish, keep thee, from harm,
Once more the sun shall forever shine bright
Oh come ye now lost spirits of the night.

Embracing Spring

Should I embrace this morning of Spring
For it lifts up my heart this joy to bring,
The warmth of the sun to caress my face
When Spring awakes, taking winters place,
Once I have heard the sweet cuckoo sing
Should I embrace this morning of Spring.

Should I embrace this morning of Spring,
And welcome the Geese return on the wing,
Seeds shall sprout where flowers once grew,
And the cycle of life shall then start anew
Daisies, buttercups, and a round fairy ring
Should I embrace this morning of Spring.

Should I embrace this morning of Spring
To wade thro`fields and do my own thing,
Spring awakens warm thoughts for lovers
And now is the time for them to discover,
Love and affection this season can bring
Should I embrace this morning of Spring.

Festa Della Mamma

Sad was the day when mamma passed away
Twenty four hours only before mothers day
The flowers were scented honeysuckle sweet
And the greeting sent was placed at her feet
There was nothing else that I could do or say
Sad was the day when mamma passed away.

Every time I look in a mirror I see her face
There behind smiling back at me with grace
Thro' life she encouraged all that I achieved
Not knowing in the end it was I who grieved
There was nothing else that I could do or say
Except Festa Della Mamma for mothers day.

The First Refusal

No dear not now, my head aches today,
Please dont annoy, I beg you this way,
I know that,`tis not my head you want
I shall not submit, to tease nor taunt,
I dont care, what you might do or say
No dear not now, my head aches today.

No dear not now I`m baking a cake
I said not now, Oh for goodness sake,
All you think about is a bit of rough.
I bore you six sons isn`t that enough.
I know wedded life is to give and take,
No dear not now, I`m baking a cake.

No dear not now I`m changing the beds
I shant get inside with you instead,
Really my dear we should be discreet
Why would I want that in clean sheets
Why dear, oh why, did we ever get wed.
No dear not now, I`m changing the beds.

It`s time dear, all my housework is done
What? you watch soccer at half past one,
Come now darling you are not being fair,
I have my needs, do you not even care,
During the adverts, we`ll have some fun.
It`s time dear, all my housework is done.

Forest Nymphs

The sweetness of the forest flowers
Shalt blossom forth between showers
When a loving embrace remains deep
Of clinging ivy the sap shall but seep
That intertwine`s of natures bowers
The sweetness of the forest flowers.

The sweetness of the forest flowers
That fades away upon autumn powers
Within mystic spells that lovers keep
A dewdrop lingers and silently weeps
Of an inner passion instinct devours
The sweetness of the forest flowers.

Gypsy Serenata

To tease the flames of a flamenco fire
That warms a spanish gypsies desire
Who plucks the strings for a serenata
In a rhythmic emotional masquerada
Tempting the warmth of a burning pire
To tease the flames of a flamenco fire.

Enticing the rhythmic beat of flamenco
Faster the flames dance to a crescendo
Unto a hot frenzy of desirous emotion
That kindle within passionate devotion
With strength of will and lots of bianco
Enticing the rhythmic beat of flamenco.

Heartland Of Dreams

Here lies within a quaint old place
Within olden times of silk and lace
An old cottage with earthen floor
With an ever opened parlour door
Unto animal or to the human race
Here lies within a quaint old place.

The warmth within welcomed all
Ever was the old kettle upon call
Hung on a hot stove above a fire
Hot scones upon the griddle pire
Of flames that did arise and fall
The warmth within welcomed all.

Deep in the heartland of my dream
It is there that my instincts redeem
Within warmth of my country lover
I shall never need to seek no other
Closer together by a floating steam
Deep in the heartland of my dream.

Johnny Be Good

Cruel were the days teenagers should mock
When the musical rhythm was jazz and rock
Run around Sue warned 'Johnny Be Good'
To try again later when she was 'In The Mood'
Keen his eyes that scanned around the clock
Cruel were the days teenagers should mock.

She was never going back 'No More No More'
Only to elope with a 'Stranger On The Shore'
Now this down town guy is 'Singing The Blues'
When stiletto heals met his 'Blue Suede Shoes'
He was never as groovy as he was before.
She was never going back 'No More No More'.

Keats, Wordsworth and Poe

With my quill in hand I do now beseach
My muse of rhymes are so out of reach
I would so love to be of a famous bard
Shall not be easy when I find it so hard
I wish Shakespeare was around to teach
With my quill in hand I do now beseach.

I dream of Keats,Wordsworth, and Poe
But how on this earth am I ever to know
Or do I need to dream in the first place
Shall they be the ones to follow my pace
When ever my words should evenly flow
I dream of Keats,Wordsworth, and Poe.

My Italiano Nonna (EC Variation)

My Italiano Nonna held me on her knee
And told me tales of old from sunny Italy,
She lived upon a mountain in Filignano
With only a donkey to travel to and fro.
Life was pretty hard then for her family,
Knowing no different they lived happily.

Many years later she left her native land
Off to Scotland with emigration planned,
Took her sons with her to start a new life.
Where Poppa took our Momma to be his wife.
They worked very hard cash was in demand,
An ice cream shop they bought and manned.

Momma was from England`s Sussex by the sea
A contortionist on stage before having me
She met our Poppa while she was on a tour,
But she was very young then and felt insecure
They both wed in a place named Gretna Green
She was the prettiest bride they had ever seen.

Then along came my sister, two brothers, and I,
Things got bad, when Poppa made Momma cry,
He turned on Momma and broke her heart
They made up their minds they were better apart,
So then returned to Englands promised shore,
Where we settled down, Momma, and us four.

But now theres no one left here but me,
And a few old pictures of my family,
Memories are golden and remain so clear
To remember times that were oh so dear,
And in my heart will cherish and remain
As I look at their photos all over again.

My Spirit Returns

Once hath returned to this life I was lent
My form will go back from where it was sent,
Whilst spirit returns on a gentle breeze
With a whisper through the Willow leaves.
I shall be thy warmth with a heavenly scent,
Once hath returned to this life I was lent.

Once hath returned to this life I was lent,
This spirit of happiness, love, and content.
I hath loved and adored , laughed and wept.
Precious memories, I in my heart hath kept
I shalt be with you, within a natural event,
Once hath returned to this life I was lent.

Once hath returned to this life I was lent.
A haunting spectre I shalt then represent .
My love forever shalt always be cherished,
Everlasting love shalt not remain perished,
Heart and spirit from, whence I was meant
Once hath returned to this life I was lent.

No Time For Sorrow

How sweet this was the first farewell
The last kiss they had recalled so well
Such were the gentle hands that touch
Told him truly that she loved him much
Tho' lovers forever time shall but tell
How sweet this was the first farewell.

Soft was the kiss of a butterfly wing
She was his queen and he her King
Gently she snuggled within his arms
Affectionate harmonies of charms.
Loving to them was a beautiful thing
Soft was the kiss of a butterfly wing.

A time of Parting no time for sorrow
If not today there is ever tomorrow
This shalt not be a parting of the way
There shall always be yet another day
Within youth a future left to borrow
A time of Parting no time for sorrow.

(The) Prayer

Pray for our world to be a better place
Let not of cruel wars this earth deface
May the beauty within forever flourish
And the fruits of the land ever nourish
To enjoy all we can of beauty and grace
Pray for our world to be a better place.

Pray for the land our forefathers grace
So much past culture we now embrace
Of plentyful buffalo and deer at hand
That graced this past and present land
Let not greed pilfer no more our space
Pray for the land our forefathers grace.

Sacred Egyptian Feline

Oh thy sacred feline from Egyptian past
A spiritual symbol of the Goddess Bast,
Mythology, worshipped from ancient lore,
Enbalmed in a tomb now, and forever more
And centurys on. when this time has passed,
Thou art perfectly preserved within thy cast.

Oh thy sacred feline from Egyptian past,
Thy art much respected as time doth pass,
Times gone by thy were depicted a lynx,
Crafted on ancient statues of sphinx.
Felines Thro` the years changed in contrast.
Thou are perfectly preserved within thy cast.

Silence Was Golden

Silence was golden under a moonlit sky,
No words were spoken twixt you and I,
We just knew that we were meant to be
At one with each other, both you and me,
It was not in our minds to say goodbye.
Silence was golden under a moonlit sky.

Silence was golden under a moonlit sky.
Even the breeze breathed a gentle sigh,
Hazily dreaming we shall never forfeit
That moment that we had felt complete,
Spiritually we knew our love did comply
Silence was golden under a moonlit sky.

-----

Tears of an Angel

When an angel fell from heaven to earth
Her beautiful eyes held sad tears of mirth
That told of a destiny that was to come
Of mystic rainstorms that shortly succumb
To awaken past spirits unto a new rebirth
When an angel fell from heaven to earth.

Gold is the halo that surrounds a new dawn
Her form still aglow where a sun had shone
Sent down to earth for all the world to know
They shall return back again if ever they go
Her form was aglow where the sun had shone
Gold was the halo that surrounds a new dawn.

Whisps of Whispers

I'm all alone for my mother she has gone
To hunt for dinner, said she wont be long
When I grow I shall hunt for food instead
Then I wont have to wait long to be fed,
Hope she is safe, and she is not lifelong
I'm all alone for my mother she has gone.

I'm all alone for my mother she has gone,
With a purrfect pitch I roar my tiger song
For I do get up to mischief when she's out
I am only a cub and just learning about,
The difference between right from wrong
I'am all alone, for my mother she has gone.

I'm all alone for my mother she has gone
For I'm her cub and know that I belong
But sometimes she can be rather fussy,
For I'm really only her mischievous pussy,
One day soon. I will certainly grow strong,
I'm all alone, for my mother she has gone.

White Horses

White as the surf of the oceanic sea
Gallant breed that rode the tides free
That rose upon the waves of an ocean
Upon unison within the tidals motion
Stallions that leap the highest degree
White as the surf of the oceanic sea.

White as the surf of an oceanic wave
Bold and strong so fearless and brave
That weaves within the surfs of a tide
With their heads held high within pride
The deepest ocean they shall engrave
White as the surf of an oceanic wave.

-----

Windows Of The Soul

If only a sparkle within true loves eyes
The look of love may not be a surprise
Both have a feeling as much the same
To ignore passion shall seem a shame
The joy of love whispers sweetest sighs
If only a sparkle within true loves eyes.

The eyes are the windows of the soul
That tempts the heart of a lovers goal
Within a deep sensual hypnotic trance
Of magical spells that induces romance
It is then that lovers become as whole
The eyes are the windows of the soul.

A meal in prey the panther found
Without words he signals his move

Imagine

He said 'Imagine' and we still fight for creed
Nothing has changed to ease man's evil greed
Too busy planning life for tomorrow
We miss the truth to embrace the sorrow
Forgetting words will hurt more than a deed
Another child ignored to live in need

The armies of war on the killing field
A brother's life; a defensive shield
As one more soul dies in ungodly shame
A suicide with no love to its name
While the ruling voices refuse to yield
As they keep their own bigotry concealed

With each day we repeat the words of hate
Impatient for wants unable to wait
But each night we dare to dream a new peace
And pray for the dying to now decrease
Yet peace begins inside the garden gate
Where we begin to control our own fate.
