2012 Poetry Theme Challenges#14 Eyes Wide Open![]() |
|
As writers we tend to be that little more observant of the world around us. This challenge is going
to take advantage of that and test those observational skills. To keep a sense of focus (yeah dreadful
play on words I know) I am going to suggest keeping with the natural world. For example, watch an animal
- how it moves and behaves - or a flower in the garden - how the petals vary in shape and colour - then
write about it! Happy Quilling! Jemmy XXXX |
Eyes Wide Open

Kathy AndersonI've seen a lot of places Been down a thousand roads black, Along the littered highways there abode Amongst the weeds wings slack, Were the butterflies wrapped in spaces Cocooned, awaiting freedoms they lack. I've been a lot of places to rue Got lost many a time to confusion Seen nightmare faces in grassy meadows Known darkness turned grey fusion In the lightest cathedral steeple view Evil eyes amongst the butterflies unison. ![]() back to list |
Divena CollinsSo quiet is this day of perfect silence No birds are singing in the trees Something must be wrong; Even the breeze dare not whisper It breathes of death. There is not even a murmur to be heard Of open mouths that cannot speak Something has happened; Waves of the sea are without sound And ebbs in silence. There is but a haunting calm in the sky Throwing shadows of deep discontent That seems so strange; They say it`s the lull before the storm Perhaps that is why. ![]() ----- Miracle Worker There are no tears in saddened eyes Nor happiness when there are fears How feint the heart that never cries There are no tears. Nor can she hear thro' deafened ears No silent voice canst speak of lies Yet she has feelings that re-appears. Tho' deaf and muteness equals unwise She shall never speak of what she hears Tho' frustration she suffers misapplies There are no tears. ![]() ----- Truth Amidst Fantasy She wept an ocean of salty tears From the depth of clouds above What was once dry land for years Parched the dessert unworthy of A land that suddenly disappears. Brought back to life through love Tears bore floods that hid the land So they named her tears an ocean And all that was left was one island That she nurtured within devotion Twas infringed with desert sand. That all came about with emotion. Time passed the island had grown Some which had parted the waves So many islands then were shown And had all seen the light of days Winds from the ocean had blown Seedlings upon islands of maize. Survival of beasts and humans too That nurture and cares for this land An ocean of fishes more than a few From mother of natures caring hand Her laws that follow for me and you Shall never be hard to understand. All that is taken must be returned For the land and ocean to flourish No acts of greed shall be spurned Let everything survive and nourish All within life shall be transformed To end mother of natures anquish. ![]() back to list |
Jem FarmerWhere shards of light entwine with flowing streams, The magic sings with breezy willow trees While lovers hide beneath the rustling green Their wedding bed an old moss-covered stone A secret place behind a weeping veil And love whispers with the water's laughter Where shards of light entwine with flowing streams, The magic sings with breezy willow trees We shared the dreams in our mystical home With falling blossom setting off to sea And we slumbered upon the mossy rock Until the dawn again revealed the day Where shards of light entwine with flowing streams, The magic sings with breezy willow trees. ----- YYYYYYYYYY ZZZZZZZZZZ ![]() back to list |
Ryter RoethicleYour wings cover the night my butterfly As you stretch them out in front of me A delicate miracle so frail, so fragile Yet they have carried you from the moon For where else can such a creature live. I hold you in my hands and see you tremble Your frail body shaking inwardly crying Your fists clenched in frustration Beat your fist on my chest Cry on my shoulder release your pain But like the butterfly I cannot hold you long I must set you free and watch you fly away Hoping that you will fly back to me And once again I can hold you ![]() ----- Just Goodnight It is now that special time of night There is no time or need to think at all The mood is softened by wine and light I've seen the afternoon's colours fall Driving home against the sun so bright My muse has me now, taken o'er control. She reminds me of the past and loves lost And at last a love that makes me whole Knowing thus, gladly will I meet the cost One I know too well has touched my soul Looking out I see the moon smiling over all The aura round her means morning frost. The music is softer now, thinking of you Even more the wine has softened the mood My eyes are ready to close it's the end of day There is just one final act I have to do Enough of life today I have viewed My last thought "I love you" I have to say. ![]() ----- Returno Last month we witnessed winters first scenes For a while we saw the splendours of farewell. The leaves had fallen and made messes on roads Which were swept up, or washed away by rain Leaving naked skeletons of trees reaching up As if praying to heaven to clothe them once again. Last month we witnessed winters first scenes For a while we saw the splendours of farewell. Even though its still midwinter, I saw an offer of spring, Bees still diligently at their task helping plants pollinate Following their flight pattern flower to flower. Is that not a sign of spring, a sign of rebirth, when Last month we witnessed winters first scenes For a while we saw the splendours of farewell. ![]() ----- Sonnet to a Sparrow How quiet your chirping now my little friend Autumn daylight keeps you longer anest Now you have no company, no love to send Were you an Eagle she'd be by your breast 'Stead come spring you must court like the rest What a pity I say that finality happened. How quiet your chirping now my little friend Autumn daylight keeps you longer anest You both were very well fed, why did it end In two months you will again build a nest Each time you build, you do your best What a pity you have to build 'stead of mend How quiet your chirping now my little friend Autumn daylight keeps you longer anest. ![]() back to list |
