#07 Roundelay

The Roundelay was a simple and popular English form which can be traced back to the time of Chaucer.
It consists of any number of quatrains and is comprised of two couplets. The second couplet is the common rhyme within each stanza, and the last line of that couplet is the refrain. This gives a rhyme scheme of.. z. z. a. A:.. etc
Roundelay
written for the Jubilee at Stratford-upon-Avon, 1769

Sisters of the tuneful train,
Attend your parent' s jocund strain,
'Tis Fancy calls you; follow me
To celebrate the Jubilee.

On Avon's banks, where Shakespeare's bust
Points out, and guards his sleeping dust;
The sons of scenic mirth agree,
To celebrate the Jubilee.

Come, daughters, come, and bring with you,
Th'aerial Sprites and Fairy-crew,
And the sister Graces three,
To celebrate the Jubilee.

Marvelous Mum

Marvellous Mummy you’ve turned ninety three,
You are a shining example to me,
And though your movements may be slower now
Your light shines brighter than ever somehow.

Beloved mother, how we treasure you
Your children, grandchildren and others too
To say what we feel, mere words don’t allow,
Your light shines brighter than ever somehow.

I look at you and remember the years
When you were the one to calm all my fears
You still do it Mummy so take a bow,
Your light shines brighter than ever somehow.

And whilst there’s life in me I promise this
I’ll tend your every need, ‘twould be remiss
Of me to do anything less, I vow.
Your light shines brighter than ever somehow.

False Light

My hair is grey but not with years of care.
Of mournful melancholy from despair
Swooning my soul into the darkest night
Far far from the oppression of false light.

False day leaves only the pit in Hell
On earth the tomb of ages rings it's bell
A tolling morning, noon and all the night
Far far from the oppression of false light.

Folderol

Wounded spirit seeks succor by babbling,
Oh naive troubled soul your words blathering
Over a mug of deep golden brewed ale,
Speak no more to the wind of thoughts set sail.

Find yourself a bonhomie to spill to
To rest your passionate voice from the spew queue,
Take the beaujolais cup without quail,
Speak no more to the wind of thoughts set sail.

Horses of the Heros

Arod, the steed of Legolas runs free
Given by the Riders of Rohan freely,
To run back home from Isengard, they loosed
The grey horse after the War, free from use.

Asfaloth, fleet of hoof few have known
Or has ever chance seen, sure elves that own
Faster horses than any mankind's folk
Have ever bred nor magically could yolk.

Bumpkin of the five ponies, Bombadil
Kept with favorite Fatty Lumpkin till
The hobbits had need and Merry did ride
To flee the Black Riders, then Bree to bide.

Bill the Pony, the least but not the last
Helped keep the hobbits safe on roads they passed,
Only happier and fatter from care
Well away from evil master unfair.

Spare a Touch

When a touch means more than the next sunrise
All that you are despairs in the night skies
Yet dark skies be welcomed oblivion dreams
As dreams offer escape from most true fears.

Dark horsemen offer their void as solace
Shadows being nowhere year are someplace
Lonely hearts may roam without scorn or tears
As dreams offer escape from most true fears.

Should you spare a touch to untouchables?
Their daydreams of love become agible
If nothing more than an embrace, gives cheer,
As dreams offer escape from most true fears

Together Forever

Infinite is the power of friendship
Two together can set sail in their sloop
Because one is not enough to sail now,
So in times of need mates shall always vow.

Survival is so much nicer when calm
Waters embarked upon give restful balm
Since only a chum will watch at your prow,
So in times of need mates shall always vow.

So arise with me at the break of day'
Let us fulfill equal destinies way
Together forever as fate allows
So in times of need mates shall always vow.

Unbalanced

When it happened the troubles came a pouring
From jealousy or envy, hates scoring
A touch down on innocence and its end
No friend of peace to help transcend.

So you walk along other roads wand'ring
Around life's pastures and factories, wing
Tougher now from bumps and pains that do mend,
No friend of peace to save you nor transcend.

Sometimes no roads in sight leave you wondering
What bush or tree holds secrets of living
For life ends to soon no roads left to wend,
No friend to save you nor transcend.

Ancient Warriors

Where feet of ancient times once trod
A damp and musty stench of peat bog
The very air they breathed we inhaled
Which the ancient warriors impaled

We knew not of whence they had been
Could it be of Romans or a Viking scene
Or from whatever ocean they had sailed
Which the ancient warriors impaled

Had they conquered us in ancient days
But change took place in different ways
With stronger defence had they failed
Which the ancient warriors impaled.

Their ghostly figures still haunt the land
Of dark musty tombs they had manned
The very air we breathe they inhaled
Which the ancient warriors impaled.

Celtic Nightmare

Bleak was my outlook within castle walls
But heard voices that echo`s ghostly calls
So dark was the dungeon I could not see
I ran to the entrance but found no key

A violent storm blew through the dark night
Dank was the dungeon devoid of all light
Alone and frightened I was destined to be
I ran to the entrance but found no key.

I in my destiny felt a presence so near
Why in my dreams should I suffer fear
But Oh in my heart I wished I was free
I ran to the entrance but found no key.

A putrid stench of death breathed within
Entombed in a dungeon how could I win
Who did it belong to mayhap it was me
I ran to the entrance but found no key.

Dark was the night of the ravens loud call
Death he sang shall but come to us all
Perched upon the bough of a willow tree
I ran to the entrance but found no key.

Gone was the fear of that night of sorrow
Haunt our dreams like theres no tomorrow
When spirits of the darkness so violently
For a fantasy entrance beheld no key.

Come by the Hills

Greener are the valleys of the celtic land
Softer the hills touched by natures hand
That wade thro` waters cascading below
Come by the hills where soft waters flow.

Dawn within valleys where sheep do graze
Beneath the mountain sides morning haze
Wild thyme therein green meadows grow
Come by the hills where soft waters flow.

High on a cloud you can hear angels sing
Or songs of birds flying home on the wing
For peace of mind that is pleasing to show
Come by the hills where soft waters flow.

Dreams in Fantasy

A wind blew high upon the mountains
Beyond the rivers of crystal fountains
Now this was her chance to ride away
She was titled a lady only for a day

She groomed and saddled her steed
Held his head high a valiant breed
The finest stallion of dappled grey
She was titled a lady only for a day.

Off she sped thro'a land of laughter
In a land of lollipops now and after
Over mountains and a fine sea spray
She was titled a lady only for a day.

Oh how she sped the vast universe
Words of angels could not converse
Thro` shooting stars to the milky way
She was titled a lady only for a day.

For dreams in fantasy is another tale
But wider awake shall no longer stay
For it`s only in dreams visions prevail
She was titled a lady only for a day.

Earth, Water, Wind, and Fire

The balance of nature all may thrive
On natural elements to keep us alive
Mother of earths instincts transpire
Of the Earth, Water, Wind and Fire.

Mind over matter in all things we do.
Changing our minds to a better view
To meditate within on all we require
Of the Earth, Water, Wind and Fire.

To have visions upon earth that flows
Beauty within the universe then grows
The balance of our needs we acquire
Of the Earth, Water, Wind, And Fire.

Such is the balance of natures law
The four elements we seek in awe
For mother of nature shall never tire
Of the Earth, Water, Wind And Fire.

Eye of Horus

Within Egypt's ancient script of historic lore
God of the sky Horus was the name he bore
Of all the Gods within Egypt's tombs of old
When a magical eye of mystery did unfold.

He mastered the lunar phases of the moon
A sun within a vast solar system within tune
Of waxing and waning and mysteries untold
When a magical eye of mystery did unfold.

He who bore wisdom from his magical eye
That induced the solar energy from the sky
Saw all and cured all within this eye behold
When a magical eye of mystery did unfold.

An almighty battle occurred in the universe
Such was it so they could never converse
Between Horus and Set who fought so bold
When a magical eye of mystery did unfold.

Horus had his eye torn clean out of his head
So much the battle then filled with dread
While Set lost all testicles his pride to hold
When a magical eye of mystery did unfold.

But all was not lost and the battle was won
Alas for poor Set's fate can not be undone
For Horus recovered his eye from the fold
When a magical eye of mystery did unfold.

And so the waxing and waning of the moon
But restored itself every lunar month soon
To be torn out from the heavens threshold
When a magical eye of mystery did unfold.

High Esteem

Sweet gifts of love thy didst bestow
Deep within memoirs of love that flow
Emotions that brought much treasure
To the highest esteem with pleasure.

I shalt ever hold so dear to my heart
And shall pray that we may never part
When I recall our moments of leisure
To the highest esteem with pleasure.

If I should ever falter from grace
I shalt e-er recall the time and place
And do not come up to thy measure
To the highest esteem with pleasure.

Insect Aside

Pretty as flowers with wings that fly
Pretty as a buttercup soft as a sigh
Cute little flutter by thee are to be
That displays all charms enticing he.

Where do you come from one so rare
To relieve thy thirst with none to share
That sips the dew drops from the tree
That displays all charms enticing he.

If he was never to be a common ant
Thy teased so much of what thy want
He maybe stand a chance with thee
That displays all charms enticing he.

Wasps in a honey pot bees still alive
Flights of butterflys for ever thrive
Earwigs in ants nest cannot foresee
What displays all charms enticing he.

Lovers Lament

There is no love left within this heart
What we had once has broken apart
Thro` winter nights we sang our song
Whatever within this love went wrong.

Lovers apart shall never be the same
All we once knew was never a game
What we once had was then so strong
Whatever within this love went wrong.

I had prayed that we would always be
Bound by devotion passionately free
But promises forsaken all nightlong
Whatever within this love went wrong

Spring has sprung but the sky is bare
Without you there is nothing to share
In a previous life time we did belong
Whatever within this love went wrong.

Mamma

Within the past before I ever knew you
Until you fell so in love that feelings grew
Never a thought was I within your mind
With maternal instincts of a mothers kind.

How I wish I had known you back then
To be held close in you arms once again
In the way that affections would find
With maternal instincts of a mothers kind.

But as I grew up and left your cosy nest
I knew when I saw it how I was blessed
An old photograph of you lovingly signed
With maternal instincts of a mothers kind.

Now you have gone to the angels above
I know in my heart I still share your love
In a beautiful garden to rest and unwind
With maternal instincts of a mothers kind.

Mother Natures Answer

Nigh upon the night of the fullest moon
A song of natures most saddened tune
She sensed the magic that she compiled
She who answers the call from the wild.

What mystical notes played on this night
'Twas she who had the gifts of insight
That only the wild life had sang beguiled
She who answers the call from the wild.

A balanced nature is there for us all
Within existence they make a final call
Whither winters snow or summer mild
She who answers the call from the wild.

Old Codgers Yarn

It was on a Saturday night they both met
Just like the old days they shall not forget
In the old bulls head for a tankard or two
Old yarns of the past that everyone knew.

Every Saturday it was the same old story
So they argued away to the point of glory
But they both had a different point of view
Old yarns of the past that everyone knew.

One Saturday night it near came to blows
But since that day they repented to show
Of tankards they had no more than a few
Old yarns of the past that everyone knew

But they were friends to the bitter end
To this day they shall toast and defend
And that was what the old codgers do
Old yarns of the past that everyone knew.

-----

Old Vagrant

The complete solitude of a lonely man
No companions it were never his plan
That lives his life behind a locked door
He always managed on his own before.

He who fought battles during the war
But where were his rights he fought for
Lost his comrades beneath earths floor
He always managed on his own before.

Staunch and stubborn to the bitter end
This he had vowed his privacy to defend
Choosing his company while others ignore
He always managed on his own before.

A much older man but so set in his way
But thought of then as he does today
Pinned to his jacket the medals he wore
He always managed on his own before.

A Quiet Corner

To sit and peruse until hearts content
When not disturbed without consent
Where sunlight shines thro'a window
Silence in thoughts shall evenly flow.

Lost in a haze of imaginative glory
Poetics converting dreams to story
Emotional words of fantasies show
Silence in thoughts shall evenly flow.

A world apart from a future unknown
Within active minds of memory shown
Caught in whirlwinds images that grow
Silence in thoughts shall evenly flow.

A quiet corner is where they shall seek
Where perfect rhythm share no critique
For then they shall reach a high plateau
Silence in thoughts shall evenly flow.

Silent Words

With my quill ink and parchment at hand
I ask not my muse of words nor demand
Of words I shall compose tho' ready not
Of prose that came so nearly but forgot.

A shadow on the sundial tells me much
And mother nature gave her final touch
I have already written odes on Lancelot
Of prose that came so nearly but forgot.

Hath felt so deeply the inner glow of love
Inspiration flowed from the stars above
And spirits of the wild within my thought
Of prose that came so nearly but forgot.

Hath writ of ancient mariners revolutions
Never brought to mind for substitutions
And gave a poem of gothic another shot
Of prose that came so nearly but forgot.

Waters Run Free

Spring is the season when trees awaken
Of tiny snowdrops amidst the tall bracken
How heavenly the scents of lilacs can be
By the stream where the waters run free.

Violets that peep though tiny buds of glory.
Where Willow boughs tell a vibrant story
The wonders of nature bloom gracefully
By the stream where the waters run free.

Shades of fox gloves within various hues
Of Carmen Pinks, and deep gentian blues
Tall and majestic such perfection to see
By the stream where the waters run free.

Migrating birds fly back home on the wing
Sings to welcome the first rays of Spring
To build nests within boughs of their tree
By the stream where the waters run free.

Ascension

No breath of air to ease my heart,
No reason found to be a part,
The time has come to close my eyes
As my soul goes where the raven flies.

Outstretched I feel my fingernails
Join with dark wings on feathered trails
To touch the breath that took my sighs
As my soul goes where the raven flies.

All vision seen through eyes of black
For a moment I can't go back
My desire to reach the winter skies
As my soul goes where the raven flies.

Mantled wings lower me to ground
In darkness hearing ev'ry sound,
I've left behind the mortal ties
As my soul goes where the raven flies.

Ascending to the greater height
The truth found where darkness meets light
My doubting voice no more denies
As my soul goes where the raven flies.

In Her Kiss

The first, a soft exploration,
That asks without exploitation,
Are we ready for all of this?
My lady holds me in her kiss.

The sleeping senses slowly wake,
As nerve endings begin to ache,
Our souls unite in love’s twist
My lady holds me in her kiss.

A simple caress upon lips,
That leads to our sensual eclipse,
As love placates the heart’s abyss
My lady holds me in her kiss.

-----

Rising Spirit

Beneath the ocean wave he falls,
His duty done as night-time calls,
I raise my eyes from cauldron spoon,
My spirit lifts to greet the moon.

The darker powers reign each night,
Yet know no fear nor feel no fright,
She’s dancing light upon the dune,
My spirit lifts to greet the moon.

I ponder much while on this shore,
My Pagan heart in lunar lore,
Within her light can now commune,
My spirit lifts to greet the moon.

Unseen the path that I must walk,
In silent words I humbly talk,
By powers found in sacred rune,
My spirit lifts to greet the moon.

-----

The Tears of Dawn

The day you left my world just fell away,
No hope or will to face each brand new day,
Nor reason to linger awhile in bed
I cannot fix the heart you left for dead.

In ev’rything a memory of you,
No answers left to tell me what to do,
As nothing but pain fills my aching head
I cannot fix the heart you left for dead.

Each night I long to feel your touch again,
To ease my broken heart of its pain,
I close my eyes and see your rage instead,
I cannot fix the heart you left for dead.

In sleep my dreams relive each loving kiss,
And dawn breaks to bring tears for all I miss,
Regretting words I should never have said
I cannot fix the heart you left for dead.

If time should heal my heart to set me free,
I’ll not forget you are a part of me,
I’ll cherish the good times we shared instead,
I cannot fix the heart you left for dead.

Meditation

At times I'm lost in blinding fear
a tangled web too thick to clear
though terror gnaws along the bone,
I'm not forgotten nor alone.

In sorrow I am burried deep
beneath the tears replacing sleep
when all is dark and joy has flown,
I'm not forgotten nor alone.

When rage devours dignity
and wicked waves consume the sea
I'll let it pass as still as stone-
I'm not forgotten nor alone.

Through swaying leaves that whisper peace
I breathe the calm and find release.
Now I belong and love is known:
I'm not forgotten nor alone.

Childhoods End

We played so many simple games
Unversed as yet in complex shames
Spirited youth taught our hearts to pretend
Regretting now childhood's end.

Searching far and wide for lasting proofs
To justify our childish games and goofs
As we would learn how to offend
Regretting now childhood's end.

Guided partly by our innocent ideals
To which we knew not yet the deals
That such innocence would cost us friends
Regretting now childhood's end.

To love and hate we learned, passing blame
That would fuel eternally growing shame
We learned we could never defend.
Regretting now childhood's end.

Oh child now grown, remember those games
The fantasies when you would make up names
Cherish now the innocence you cannot mend.
Regretting now childhood's end.

Donde esta ese Equilibrio

Where is the balance in our life
Born in an act of pain and strife
More often than not happenstance
Where is that balance?

We reluctantly left the comfort of the womb
Now all our future leads us to the tomb
First love, family love, cast aside for romance
Where is that balance?

We love; we love well, for many years,
But in time that love finally turns to tears
In another ward there is no chance
There is that balance?

-----

Green Beast

I watched them as they plant the bush
Ignorant of the beauty laying there so lush
And all that's needed is love and feedback
Nature is green it's mans soul that's black.

In spring like man, everything is born
From winter's womb unwillingly torn
As life's mantel begins to re-track
Nature is green it's mans soul that's black.

Greenies tell so many lies, to get their way
Because of their lies firemen must pay,
And ignorant of that need to burn back
Nature is green it's mans soul that's black.

I Have No Choice - Variation

Between the day and night
You have a different voice.
There is no difference how I feel
I have no choice.

In the sparkle of your eyes
I learn all about our love.
In the shelter of your arms I learn
I have no choice.

With the feel of your touch
You mould me like potters clay
Love's taken my mind and remade it
I have no choice.

I look up at the clear night sky
And see the twinkle of the stars
Because of you, we belong there
We have no choice.

-----

Lark Ascending

The lark ascends into the blue sky
See her joy approaching heaven on high
See the lark ascend, a celestial ballet
So close to Heaven most of her day.

The lark ascends over green clad hill
Her sound, her song, is mortals thrill
All else transcends, see her fly away
So close to Heaven most of her day.

Flying straight o'er mans winding road.
Her scorn of man and how he's bestowed
She flies on contemptuous as is her way
So close to Heaven most of her day.

The lark descends as the night draws nigh
Her song now just a little subdued sigh
As the lark ascended, all else was grey
So close to Heaven most of her day.

-----

Knowing You

To you I gave just one more touch
Knowing it would mean so much;
What can say that I wouldn't do,
Now I have the pleasure of knowing you?

I'm certain nothing to you I could I deny
My feelings for you have an infinite supply
That special touch that feels so true
Now I have the pleasure of knowing you?

To feel your lips constantly upon me
What greater wonder could there be?
Each kiss brings Heaven closer to view
Now I have the pleasure of knowing you?

I realise Eternity and such I’d lose
If it were to be so easy, would I choose?
Your breath on my face, what would I do
Now I have the pleasure of knowing you?

The feeling of your body next to mine
Brings a new meaning to the word divine.
And the feelings that are about to ensue
Now I have the pleasure of knowing you.

Qiyamah

Finally there is no time left to weep
Instead a time when non may sleep
It is the last day and no skies of blue
With the dimming lights I bid “Adieu”

There’s no way that we can pretend
As darkness comes that it will not end.
One by one stars fade leaving on cue
With the dimming lights I bid “Adieu”

No sun will rise, no wondrous dawn
The moon and stars are all now gone.
Leaving a black and empty sky view
With the dimming lights I bid “Adieu”

On the stage of life no-one will play
The actors are gone, no lines to say.
The curtain falls, all of life is through
With the dimming lights I bid “Adieu”

Question of Balance

Sitting here in my office in the evening
Listening to the noisy crickets singing
The rain looks to be gone at first glance
And I wonder is there ever a balance?

Ten years of drought with hardly a drop
But now up North, when will it stop?
My gardens doing well at first glance
And I wonder is there ever a balance?

Then I look back in my country's history
Realising it's always been a great mystery.
They rarely get it right in the US or France
And I wonder is there ever a balance?

Greenpeace goes on talk of global warming
With loads and loads of bullshit they fling
Ignoring there is a tempo in Natures dance
And I wonder is there ever a balance?

-----

Unfair Love

When I touch you I see you smile at me
All plans are working as they should be.
For a short while we have a loving cue
Where can I touch you.

Just for a while I don't have to scheme.
Instead things are certainly as they seem
Where you and I can share one view
Where I can touch you.

A few hours apart would seem extreme
Yet we spend so long apart, I scream
That fate has placed our lives askew
When I can I touch you.

Values of a Poetry Lesson

As I sat quietly among the eucalyptus trees
Sitting and savouring the evening breeze.
Like a lover the breeze moved the leaves gently
As I sat there thoughtfully.

I was in time joined by some special friends
I ask naught of them, or even seek amends.
We were there wrapped in thought pleasantly
As we sat there thoughtfully.

I told them how with some, childhood ends,
And nodded when told how poetry transcends.
We made notes in books and wrote eloquently
As we sat there thoughtfully.

Then we drank wine and I ate some cheese
And we will become closer now by degrees,
Then I went back to writing more poignantly
As we sat there thoughtfully.

Walk of Liberty

Walking in streets I've never roamed
Besides houses that were never homes
Eyes look out still, and at the source
Remember, you still have force.

There's not a house with unlocked doors
Grouped people inside, are there in scores
Their voice is low and much too hoarse
Remember, you still have force.

The sun never passes through the glass
Or is ignored like all other promises cast
Only by protest, can you change the course
Remember, you still have force.

Why sit around when work must be done
Or stand there wondering can I pass it on?
It's time to do, and act without remorse
Remember, you still have force.

Relevance in the way we do our things
It's the only way that democracy brings
All that is happening, can you endorse
Remember, you still have force.

Yearning For The Night

With the poignancy of my memory
My lover's spirit returns to me.
Coming more acute as the night begins
As soon as darkness closes in.

I miss you walking through the door.
And my loneliness is felt more
A cold wind teases against my skin
As soon as darkness closes in.

The little things that said, your mine,
Like certain music, or a glass of wine
They have gone away to my chagrin
As soon as darkness closes in.

Seeing faces and events from the past
Making promises that love would last
Just like a balloon pricked with a pin
As soon as darkness closes in.

Sometimes with confusing imagery
Thoughts invade my mind randomly
And I willingly wish them to begin
As soon as darkness closes in.

Recourse to dreams in a surreal setting
And with dawn my sanity getting
I don't want that I want was has been
As soon as darkness closes in.

Zen Conversation

The dark abyss of a soul is never empty
It's the part of your soul no one should be
Your private thoughts echo there
And afraid that there may be sharks

Just undiscovered thoughts through ages
Hidden secrets waiting there avoiding sages
Thoughts, feelings and precious moments
And afraid that there may be sharks.

Looking with eyes that see in the dark
Listening with ears that hear in the silence
That may betray, revealing what you're not
And afraid that there may be sharks.

Using sense, realising everything is nothing.
That can be found by searching the mind
Except temporary wafts of a good idea
And afraid that there may be sharks.

As though we stood at the edge of the ocean
Questioning whether to wade into the water
Its ok as long as you stay between the signs
But still afraid that there may be sharks.

Eating wild fruit, learning how to fly, what more is there to live for?

Unfair Love

Roadside attractions, some grimy, most gone.
once carried the beauty of a swan.
families driving to see these sights
to be blinded by the neon lights.

and cityscapes felt the winds of change,
as financial fortunes were rearranged:
swing of economy: city benights;
people blinded by the neon lights.

good-bye milk bottle-shaped ice cream stands
giant moose which gazes across the land
tight-packed commerce gives humans delight
and they're blinded by the neon lights

But steer yourself down an older street
stainless steel diner, sign only says, "EAT"
perhaps a giant cactus glowing bright
is beckoning you with its neon lights

One Part Angel and One Part Danger

You're walking the street and keeping yourself righteous;
holding it all down by being abstentious;
but the smell of the beer coming out of that bar
is making it happen that you're not getting far.

You're living one part angel then one part danger,
trying to keep pace with the man from the manger.
but wandering on by some hedonist bazaar
is making it happen that you're not getting far.

eschewing tawdry trappings, modesty your cue,
without sackcloth and ashes, yet no ballyhoo;
gleaming successes showing you're a superstar,
are making it happen that you're not getting far.

stepping out of the light, staring into the dark,
becoming aware of every blazing star;
the cosmos demanding that you enter its sphere
and with help from an angel, you're getting quite far!
