2011 Poetry Form Challenge#08 Ballade |
|
The Ballade as its name suggests is a French form and along with the Rondeau was one of the first
forms to be standardised in the 14th cetury. Written in syllabic prosody of any
one line length, the original French forms were octosyllabic, but now decasyllable is more common,
and iambic tetrameter etc; are just as acceptable.
The construction is 28 lines which are divided into three octave stanzas and a four line envoi. See below where Leny Roovers gives a lovely example of this form.
Envelope BalladeThe Envelope Ballade is just as interesting a form as the basic Ballade, however, the Refrain begins and ends each stanza. The construction is similar with the rhyme pattern changing to: A, b, a, b, c, a, c A, and the envoy c, a, c A,Here is an example of this form.

Divena CollinsWhy do you sit on thy toadstool there Smoking thy pipe of illusioned weed Within your trance only you can share To take you away in a dream you need Is it your troubles within that you feed So much so that it makes you forget The present life he had failed indeed His actions he was never to regret. Why do you say that you cannot bear This loathesome existance you lead If you come along to the land full of care You shall see you have done a misdeed For theres more to your life than weed When life is still good it is not over yet And has not yet reverted to excede His actions he was never to regret. You say you do not belong anywhere There is nothing on earth to proceed But there is plenty of loving to share Then you too shall forever succeed For survival you shall do a great deed In the making of a most perfect duet Yielding such perfect loving to breed His actions he was never to regret. His life once again was so grand indeed For never again had he needed to fret Gave up the weed which he now agreed His actions he was never to regret.
-----Imperfections - Envelope Ballade Ah! Today is splendid chose to be imperfect Believing in self I can and I will do that I can leap into the greatest imperfections I elect Bounce off the walls, land into immortal combat Yep, the thought of being famous comes tomorrow I will follow the steps of A rich and famous subject At the end of the day I’ll be proud four what I show Ah! Today is splendid chose to be imperfect Ah! Today is splendid chose to be imperfect Outside winds stirred hair, look like a ding bat Flirted with water men fixin’ bursting pipes wrecked Watched gray clouds cover mountains with smoggy fat Brought in camp potty chair found it to be way too low For computer; so don’t have to leave; what the heck Opened canned soup, drunk it not heated; no time! to slow! Ah! Today is splendid chose to be imperfect Ah! Today is splendid chose to be imperfect played games online, no time to run to toilet where I sat ’cause I was winning for the first time in years, not imperfect! But, what the heck, can’t be imperfect all time, face the fact! Stood up, knocked potty over on to floor and my big toe No time to clean up crap nor piss, to busy writing ; scat rat! It’s starting to really stink in here from the spill, ah! So! Ah! Today is splendid chose to be imperfect The mortal to this screwy write; don’t be to lazy to blow, Your nose on a tissue instead of blowing it into potty; at Least you won’t sit on the snot, well time I clean big toe Ah! Today is splendid chose to be imperfect. ----- Elements Of Nature.--- Envelope Ballade There shalt be earth water wind and fire Upon this planet where humans shall live Where natural elements shalt transpire From the creator whose gifts shalt give; Man shalt nurture and work on this land Providing substainance they then require Along side nature with strength of hand There shalt be earth water wind and fire. There shalt be earth water wind and fire Nothing on this earth shalt they deprive For laws of nature are all they require Understanding rules bound to survive; There shalt be no greed or no demand No ill feelings nor threats to conspire Nature provides all the help she can There shalt be earth water wind and fire. There shalt be earth water wind and fire All that is needed for earthings to thrive And all shalt dwell with love and desire For the seeds of life shalt soon revive; And new borne shalt then be spawned Yet again humanity once more shalt sire For thus mother of nature had planned There shalt be earth water wind and fire. A new morning shalt then be dawned Along with the elements they require For all the nutrients here and beyond There shalt be earth water wind and fire. ![]() ----- I Know Not -- Envelope Ballad I know not where this road shall end Yet to end I think not why it must For once you were my only friend Until friendship had turned to lust; It was then that our feelings grew When love was on an upward trend Within both eyes shone I and you I know not where this road shall end. I know not where this road shall end To end would be extemely unjust Our love is dear one cant pretend With a blessing to share and trust; Wonders of love longingly shared To share to cherish and defend Feelings that both of us have fared I know not where this road shall end. I know not where this road shall end It would now be hard to re-adjust Within this love we both depend Upon each other for love we must; Your gentle touch and loving kiss Towards passionate hearts extend All this alone I know we would miss I know not where this road shall end. Dreams like this we cannot dismiss For nearness thus we comprehend Just being together is utter bliss I know not where this road shall end. ![]() ----- Middle Earth --- Spanish Ballade Lost in this fantasy of middle Earth Where Cloven hooved goblins roam Further beneath from the upper berth Stands a hovel they call their home; Magical creatures of unknown breeds Appear from stone boulders inside A harp playing bard takes the lead Towards realms of the great divide. Hobgoblins dance to this magic harp And follow the bard towards the nook Where crystal icycles cold and sharp Drip a gentle tear towards the brook; Mystical rainbow`s through the sun Where butterflies flutter far and wide For now their flight has just begun Towards realms of the great divide. Mythical Unicorns of past folk lore Enhances dreams, for maidens fair Mermaids following to swim ashore For such is the fantasy they share; They emerge from out of the reeds Yielding towards fantasies derived To find the bard who took the lead Towards realms of the great divide. Unto the realms where emotions feed Upon the musical notations he revived Come follow the bard who took the lead Towards realms of the geat divide. ![]() ----- Old English Village That olde cart path still winds the way Thro`many of thy quaint olde roads An ancient church still stands today Amidst those thatch roof top abodes The village stream flows gently on Where little children oftimes play There just beyond their village lawn That olde cart path still winds the way. That olde cart path still winds the way Towards ye olde convenient store Where country wares are on display Amidst sawdust strewn upon a floor Of milk, eggs, and tiny pigs trotters Butter, cheeses fresh made that day Fruit and veg and new dug pertaters That olde cart path still winds the way. That olde cart path still winds the way Onwards to the olde travellers inn Where many thirsty travellers stay Many a lad drunk his first there in An ancient horse trough still remains Along side some larger bales of hay To nurture the horses and sustain That olde cart path still winds the way. This village forever remains the same Tho` time shall mellow come what may Youthful villagers once more reclaim That olde cart path still winds the way. ![]() ----- Sleepy Hollow --- Ballad Variant Green is the ring where faeries dance Today`s just the same as tomorrow Birds in treetops downward glance The cuckoo, wren, and the swallow; Comfrey caterpillar cocks his head But finds its a hard dance to follow So he concertinas back to his bed Through the glade to Sleepy Hollow. A sleepy owl complains in the tree Why ever do they cause me sorrow I sleep by day am so tired you see For tonight shall be my tomorrow; In the morning sun they flew away The Cuckoo, wren, and the swallow A perfect place for their eggs to lay Through the glade to Sleepy Hollow. Gold were the fields of harvest corn Now the earth had been left to fallow A tiny field mouse had just been born On a cradle of fern and marshmallow The stars shone bright upon this eve And the moon was the palest yellow While a silhouette of bats did weave Through the glade to Sleepy hollow. Not A sound did the wild life breathe Nor the call of the bovines bellow All was silent within green sheaves Through the glade to Sleepy Hollow ![]() Picture From Beatrice Potter ----- Spiritual Love Right there beneath the willows shroud Where the shaded air might cooler be I rest my weary head from the crowd `Tis there I cherish my love for thee; Thro` leaves thy spirits cannot sever Within this love I doth thee enshroud This blessing shalt be with us forever Right there beneath the willows shroud. Right there beneath the willows shroud Where spirits of love reign wild and free This love we have we both then vowed We would love each other both tenderly; We had but the brightest stars up above No longer were our heads in the clouds Knowing we were both so much in love Right there beneath the willows shroud. Right there beneath the willows shroud Our love was right there under the tree This fantasy of passion well endowed When love flourished for thee and me; After a time these passions then grew For dreams of love were so allowed Both now sharing the same point of view Right here beneath the willows shroud. Some day in time dreams do come true And when they do I shalt remain proud When I dream the man I loved was you Right here beneath the willows shroud. ![]() back to list |
Maryse AchongHe was known as the village Romeo Flirting with every female that he met The ladies still it seemed could not say no Surrounding him at every dance and fete, They just could not resist his charm, they let Him have his way with them - oh happy days! Though he swore he’d always be in their debt; The time had come for him to change his ways. And then one night after a late, late show, He was walking back to his home, upset There was no damsel on his arm, when lo! He spied a female form ahead; he bet Himself that she was lost; perhaps he’d ‘get Lucky’ still he wagered, (to use a phrase), Though it seemed he would have a good time yet; The time had come for him to change his ways. He approached her quickly and in sotto Voce he greeted her, started a tête- à-tête: and soon he was prepared to go With her, until he lit a cigarette. What he saw made him break out in a sweat- Her yes like burning coals were now ablaze, He felt that he was under serious threat. The time had come for him to change his ways. It seemed he’d become trapped in his own net Almost captured by La Diablesse’s gaze He broke into a run, now soaking wet The time had come for him to change his ways. ![]() ----- Local Characters Papa Bois is father of the forest, Caretaker of the animals and trees Be careful of how you behave there lest You incur his wrath, for that is when he’s A fearsome foe, and not one to displease. A half man and half beast he is well known To all the people of the West Indies: These legendary tales are all home grown. ![]() The Soucouyant’s an uninvited guest, An evil crone who sheds her skin with ease, And like a ball of fire starts her quest For human blood; and neither locks nor keys Can stop her, and nothing else will appease Her. She cuts through the sky when light has flown, And sucks her fill of blood, with expertise. These legendary tales are all home grown. ![]() The Douens are little spirits who weren’t blessed, Sometimes you hear their voices as they tease, Calling to others, little souls possessed; But warn your children to ignore their pleas. Far better stay inside for they will seize Them; small blank faces that whimper and moan Little back to front feet and knobbly knees. These legendary tales are all home grown. Like pollen that is carried on a breeze, These narratives like seeds have been well sown, They’ve travelled over land and over seas, These legendary tales are all home grown. ![]() ----- Perfect Friend He’s there His hand outstretched calling to you; The answers which we seek all lie in Him, He offers peace of mind, a love that’s true; Although He may not grant our every whim, He listens to us when we call His name, And even when we ignore Him and do Things as we want, which fail, He gets the blame. He’s there His hand outstretched calling to you He’s there His hand outstretched calling to you, Our guiding Light when all the world seems dim, And though we seldom give Him His just due He’s the One who fills our cup to the brim; We drink our fill, dismiss Him to our shame; And His demands on us are really few, He loves us and asks that we do the same. He’s there His hand outstretched calling to you He’s there His hand outstretched calling to you When laughter’s fled and the future looks grim, When we imagine that our life is through, And that our only option, sink or swim Is to find Him, to try and keep the flame Of love alive in us as we subdue Harsh feelings that may want to stake their claim. He’s there His hand outstretched calling to you No fickle friend is He, no passing game, He’s The Friend amongst all friends in my view; Our happiness His main focus, His aim He’s there His hand outstretched calling to you. ----- Perfect Vision We live and learn I know that refrain well, And every day presents facts that are new, That bring a smile or sound a warning bell Or lift a veil from eyes so we see through The outer skin of those we thought we knew; That may or may not be a pretty sight, But knowledge lends us power to accrue The wisdom to make choices that are right. We are never too old to learn they tell Us: we always have the chance to review Our opinions, and perhaps to dispel Doubts, or on the other hand, bid adieu To things and situations which imbue Our lives with sadness; then to our delight We’ll gain, if we to our own selves are true, The wisdom to make choices that are right. Perhaps we are at time too prone to dwell On painful events caused by people who Like books we judged by their cover, their shell, And that’s a really silly thing to do; So easy to be wrong, to misconstrue Their actions; for that can put us in quite An awful place and hard pressed to pursue The wisdom to make choices that are right. Sometimes we wonder what all the ado Was about, when at last the long-sought light Is visible and we can tap into The wisdom to make choices that are right. back to list |
Sal CoraccioIt was the latter part of fall, the sky like slate grew cold with mist, and though it promised us a squall with growing winds that doth persist to make the tavern's signpost twist, we kept our tankards filled with rum and sang of friends and maidens kissed, the day the dragon ate William. It started, as I do recall, as William slammed his meaty fist and took to wave it at us all on muscled arms and heavy wrist; was someone worthy in our midst, who would, on challenge, with him come - he was so obviously pissed, the day the dragon ate William. Yet none among us took the call, we having known or having guessed, that it involved the grisly wall and nearby cave of late possessed, and though we made a harsh protest, he gave our noses all the thumb and stormed right out without assist, the day the dragon ate William. We should have tried but he'd insist - who'd have thunk the boast would kill him; we sang him drunk on his great quest, the day the dragon ate William. |

Jem FarmerI thought I saw the sun peer through a cloud A warming breath to say goodbye to tears I could again stand tall and say I’m proud To close history on all of my fears But rays of light are just old glassy smears And words mean nothing; they leave you alone With solitude’s pain and now nothing cheers As mem’ries turn a heart of love to stone My eyes never shall see that pretty face That one brief glimpse to set the world alight For beauty’s smile that radiates with grace Cannot be mine; I return to the night I shall not taste her lips honeyed delight For such a pleasure I’m not worthy to own I have no will to stand against this plight As mem’ries turn a heart of love to stone Rekindling dreams of a different kind In the distance there burns an older flame But love I will no longer seek to find So I can never dare call out her name My heart, too wild, they have failed to tame Too many times, I’ve heard ‘I love you’ drone Those empty words but pain hurts all the same As mem’ries turn a heart of love to stone No longer shall I yearn for passion’s kiss Or yield to wantings of the pleasure zone In darkness lies no joy or loving bliss As mem’ries turn a heart of love to stone back to list |

Ryter RoethicleSo much to do so much to share True loves helps in time of pain With each love a life of care Helping each other to sustain Love as much as you would deign We lie on the bed together Our love our life forged a chain No one will separate us ever. No longer knowing I am there Constantly hearing "what’s your name?" These last months have seen so much wear We have loved and will again. Your mind died before the frame At least in death we’ll be together Our love will not have been in vain No one will separate us ever. Stroke my face in mindless care A reflex from a half dead brain I wish, but there is nothing there No conversation, just refrain. No tears left and no shirt to stain I know now love is forever What we have lost we will regain No one will separate us ever. Life in your eyes begins to wain Our ties with life we now sever. Sleep my love dream of Cockaigne No one will separate us ever. Pills we took soon closed your eyes Our breathing slows, no more sighs Feel what I’ve done is for the best And you fall asleep against my chest ----- Flight, Gods Gift God gave Angels and birds the gift of flight Leaving man to stomp and root around. To many creatures he gave this right Yet we evolved and still stayed downed. Identifying them all by call, by sound I look each day and watch the avians play These calls tell me how their life abounds Scornful of us mortals held to this clay. As the evening falls listen to their calls And bragging of the adventures found. Of sink and holes and huge thermals, With balanced wings they flew around. Flying below clouds that now abound Then a final descent into the closing day For a while to rest close to the ground Scornful of us mortals held to this clay As the evening arrives the bats come alive, You hear them call out their unique sound. Blind they are, yet they feed and survive And in nights darkness they fly around. Aids flight for which they are renowned. Whilst mortals sleep, they go their sonic-way With morn’s creep they to, return to the ground, Scornful of us mortals held to this clay Many creatures that belong to the ground Have learned to fly by some other way. But only an Avian deserves to be crowned Scornful of us mortals held to this clay ![]() ----- Gippsland Floods The hard beating rain came with the wind, Roaring and slashing through the trees And the winter scene was harshly skinned As if to bring arboreal life to its knees And its death was all that would please Nature in what was thought her rage. Instead she had listened to our pleas Be careful what you wish for in this age. The oaks and pines, knowing their place, Had bowed down to her as she passed, Those that had ignored had been erased The wise have survived her mighty blast. The storm has eased and is now the past Now is the time to start with a clean page Will man take advantage of his wish at last? Be careful what you wish for in this age. A once parched land has broke it’s drought With dried up beds now o’rflown banks And flooded plains from east winds route But the filling dams we must give thanks Streets awash now show a river scene Rubber life-boats are now all the rage There’s a gap where the bridge had been Be careful what you wish for in this age. El Nino’s gone and La Nina’s in her place There is now a reading in rain’s gauge How long I wonder will we see this face Be careful what you wish for in this age. ----- Il percorso sotto le stelle When there is nothing above us but stars Below us is the path we choose to walk Let me walk with you and it will be ours Do not rush your thoughts, let us just talk. If perhaps in time we should choose to kiss And linger in some spot for untold hours For what is love but time spent just in bliss When there is nothing above us but stars When there is nothing above us but stars Then heaven is open for us to touch What are clouds but blankets, never bars So that each time we reach out to clutch They will have warmed each of our dreams We will watch as the icy mist disappears In the freshness of morn plan our schemes When there is nothing above us but stars When there is nothing above us but stars The moon lights up our path along our way Must we treat the shadows like our fears That in time might just betray? Consider them once part of something whole Now ethereal gifts from light years afar Time has blessed us and took away control When there is nothing above us but stars. Time can’t be controlled in spite of power The path we take is carved by life’s scars Ignore them love, let’s find a fragrant bower When there is nothing above us but stars. ![]() ----- Loss of a Mate Why is it only with death we realise, That it’s too late, we’ve lost a friend? Why is it only when someone dies, Why must there have to be an end? The more you have, the more you spend. And the worse that is for your health, You should never wait until the end. Friendship is still the greatest wealth, All things have not been said have they? Say it now, drop your pride and bend, Before it’s too late, say it all today, Why must you wait until the end? Love is riches you cannot spend, For in spending, can you not lose all? Forget pride, and let friendship mend, Friendship is still the greatest wealth. I wish I’d spoken instead of just hotmail I wish I could have been a better friend. We had moved miles apart, and there’s a tale And now there’s a funeral I cannot attend But we spoke so there’s nothing to mend. So take care mate and save a beer for me I know that still on you I can depend, Friendship is still the greatest wealth. Declare your love or regret forever There is no pride when love is gone For the dead possess nothing ever Friendship is still the greatest wealth. RIP A.G. 9 Sept 1941 - 8 April 2011 ----- Part Moon Only part a moon rises in the sky Still it lightens the Jacaranda leaves The darkness is no longer an ally In removing the thoughts my mind perceives I know the truth is what my heart believes That chill half-hearted light now brings remorse And welcomes now the more delightful eves Into a soul more wanting to stay its course. New moon tonight has ridden up on high It's brightened rays send forth silver sheaves And make the shadowy side ignore the lie Until dawn turns blue, finally darkness leaves To disappear until night again achieves And creates a memory of this growing force Created by two lovers who conceive Into a soul more wanting to stay its course. But now old moon that is drawn so fine Your sleepless face can barely bless the wreaths On the ground with one grey kiss as you die Put sharpened blades of light into their sheaths In a night of darkness sanity grieves But a love once held strong needs no recourse Knowing now that darkness helps lovers weave Into a soul more wanting to stay its course. Unseen in darkness your lover receives Your words a gentle murmur to endorse Knowing that eternity is all and recedes Into a soul that thought to stay its course. ![]() ----- Somewhere In Time III When there is nothing above us but stars Below us is the path we choose to walk Let me walk with you and it will be ours Do not rush your thoughts, let us just talk. The moon smiles as we do so See her smile and eyes open wide As you touch me there softly And my eyes are your guide. Touch me there softly Let your eyes be my guide As I hold you so closely Your heart opens wide. Love has joined us so easily And our souls together abide As you touch me there softly And my eyes are your guide. Touch me there softly As my will slowly subsides Our lips kiss so tenderly Then later passions applied It all becomes so Heavenly Now that love’s been applied As you touch me there softly And my eyes are your guide. For a while we’re heaven Where as lovers we’ll abide As you touch me there softly And my eyes are your guide. ![]() ----- Under Attack As I sit here quietly in my garden Typing out my poem as images come to mind, I see the leaves shiver from a wind hidden. Looking harder no source at all can I find Looking up I see the clouds moving closer Their bottoms low and black and sullen; An army of storm clouds in a warlike square As I sit here quietly in my garden. As I sit here quietly in my garden The first flash I see and I become resigned. The cold or the rain don’t worry me in my den This hideaway has been thoughtfully designed. I put my computer in its bag under the chair I can still write with my special pad n pen And I hear the thunder boom way over there As I sit here quietly in my garden. As I sit here quietly in my garden The first heavy splats hit by the wind inclined At an angle now set by a wild comedian Booming with each flash, madness unconfined Egg sized droplets crashing down without care Suddenly it stops everything is fresh again Nature’s shown herself as still worthy of prayer As I sit here quietly in my garden. The sky’s still black and still booming over there But above is clear and blue showing once again I begin to type once more, without a care As I sit here quietly in the garden ![]() ----- Verfallsdatum (Expiry Date) - (Variation) So dark is the night and I am alone. I do not fear the dark, why should I? Listen carefully to the night wind moan I am the mote in your fearful eye. A wisp of smoke or the smell of fear See a shadow and I hear you cry. You begin to panic and I see a tear It's now too late, it's time to die. Look back on life that should have been Instead you hide your life with a lie. So pure outside, you appear so clean I am the mote in your fearful eye. Ghosts of the Past you brushed away "There are no Ghosts of now", you cry. Mind crimes count for naught you say It's now too late, it's time to die. Innocents, all victims of your crime Leave their graves to deny your lie. For evil only exists a finite time Justice removes her blindfold with a sigh. All you have sown it's time to be paying. Ashen faced you give in finally. You grab your chest and feel the pain It's now too late, it's time to die. Your prayers I’m told are all ignored I am the mote in your fearful eye. Hypocrisy has thrown truth overboard It's now too late, it's time to die. ----- Vouchsafe Thy Dreams Dare I dream and thus dream of thee, Lesser loves died happily for nought When a fool knows to wake is not to see? Lending power and strength to thought, Shall I ever close my eyes and peek How bought so cheap is mortality, For that precious love I blindly seek? Dare I dream and thus dream of thee? Dare I dream and thus dream of thee, And yet I am sick from want and desire? Within beats my breast tormented by thee As passions are summoned by the hour. Know well within your heart this fire. Dare you share for a while my mortality? Such apparent calm yet inside mad desire Dare I dream and thus dream of thee? Dare I dream and thus dream of thee, Meaning a sleepless night, and alone. Dreams are oftimes would be reality, In the fields of dreams wishes are sown. Beguiling thoughts are created this way I wonder if it’s only in sleep we truly see. And in seeing truth what would I say, Dare I dream and thus dream of thee? In procrastination I feel that I am safe Yet I fight my soul it does not agree. I know in time my mind will vouchsafe Dare I dream and thus dream of thee? ----- Xenobiotic, a Protest I have found myself, not that I was lost More that I was tangled in the web of life The spider of that life made me pay the cost And just in time I was able to use a knife To cut myself free and get back on my path. Even though its winter I must stand the frost That disdainful breath of Fate and her wrath I have found myself, not that I was lost I have found myself, not that I was lost But I was an alien living in a foreign land An icy world where there was eternal frost Emotionless where everything was planned Smiles were sought and friendship bought And love came only at an exorbitant cost Was it love or simply an expensive thought? I have found myself, not that I was lost I have found myself, not that I was lost Corporations and politicians control on life Again today I thought about all the cost. The cost of oil, of terrorism and the strife Global warming, ozone layers and such. Third the world is burning, another in frost, There is all that flooding not leaving much I have found myself, not that I was lost I cannot isolate myself, that is a crime I must speak out loud, or pay the cost And such is the purpose of this rhyme I have found myself, not that I was lost. back to list |
Dana RoweWas it the blood you had to see? or were you just issuing fear? now you've become the detainee: you've lived your life too cavalier. a firearm you'd commandeered; age eighteen: criminal intent. young life lost, not to reappear. Might have prevented your descent? legions had tried to set you free: civilization's thin veneer; present status they could foresee. childhood's innocence disappeared: reality's escapee's sphere. at school all saw your sad ferment antagonistic mutineer. Might have prevented your descent? your behavior, like a banshee; rage to control and domineer. from education, soon broke free: on the streets, you reengineered; your darkest angers soon cohered, in carrying out your torments on those who chose to disagree. Might have prevented your descent? juggernaut with no steering gear: closeted with all your torment. had something been done across the years, Might have prevented your descent? back to list |
Leny RooversThe mountain that I chose to climb is tall- on clear days I can barely see its peak, the narrow path is treacherous and crawls in twisting curves round crevices and creeks. Beneath my feet loose stones and branches squeak, each foothold is precariously tried as slowly I will master the technique to overcome this hardship, stay upright. This vibrant rock is living, it enthrals; the sights along the road distract- I’m weak, each vista is seductive and it stalls the steady progress upwards that I seek. The summit is still far, the chance unique to break new ground and trust my guide, to follow in his footsteps and be meek- to overcome this hardship, stay upright. The gully is constricting with high walls, as light has been cut off, the pass looks bleak; the crowns of trees a ceiling for this hall where high amidst the leaves a falcon shrieks. I raise my head and see her wings in streak, the fast flight downward to the prey she eyed; it breaks my thrall and I at last can speak to overcome this hardship, stay upright. Restraining bonds shrugged off, I dare to peek, new energy bursts free with every stride; the words I cried from eyes have leaked to overcome this hardship, stay upright.

Carly Svamvour(An Acrostic Ballade) Silent is night 'neath star-spackled heavens In tandem, earth reels with the galaxy. Daughters of the north hearth shiver; husbands engage strong sons at cuts of fallen trees. Roaring fires render winter's cruelty essentially helpless. In plaintiff call, a lone wolf howls its song, 'cross the snowy limbo of dreams, like life in a glass ball. Sleep comes easy out there in the woodlands, 'neath eiderdown and old pine; big cities of the world seem nothing more than craven waxwork, destined to poison minds - dis-ease for the lonely heart - tempest for the naive adolescents who yearn for bright lights, all lingering at the edge of a lazy limbo of dreams, like life in a glass ball. Pander me not with the palaverin' on all of the latest amenities enshrined in the suburbs, the exurbs and tenpenny bullfeather bureaucracies. I would, if given my druthers or leave, choose to be right out there under the all absorbing awe, this star-tangled hazy limbo of dreams, like life in a glass ball. Hearken the call to the northland, take ease on a down-feathered bed. As the snow falls, we shall turn, in tune with the galaxy's limbo of dreams, like life in a glass ball. -----

Nicola WynterRomes tree has called her home to it, While Empires crop will less than sate, Her taste is for the apples wit The one and only, best to wait For, for only this can we sit Down to dine, for love's sublime match Can be found under moons glow lit, A golden moment to there catch. Impossible sweet Crispin pit Spit upon loves ground none too late To grow eternal fruits, so writ. For all the kinds and ways we relate Such variety man creates, Heaven on earth where we're bewitched And there we may then conjugate A golden moment to there catch. For apple blossoms just one whit Is all it takes to integrate Soul mates star stones so tightly knit, Such a shining moment awaits Them in their eternity gate Which passing through brings no mismatch, Just another sign that waits A golden moment to there catch. When time has gone, no blooms do quit, For sun forever bless their patch Of evermore rich dreams a bit, A golden moment to there catch. ----- Restless Thoughts No one knows where the ravens stay or go Though going off to find them is a ride Through misty forests and dry flat plateau, The seek to find a morsel as they glide Shaking off the dew consulting their guides, Always stopping by the rose bowered cave To get honey before the bear derides, Their gentle feathers and shining beaks rave! They are as many as the stars that show The sailor which way he ought to abide, As dark as midnight without a moon glow As yellow as the daffodil that bides In the faery glens of yesterdays trow, And so we believe the tales of yores brave Young religious finding new faith to grow, Their gentle feathers and shining beaks rave! The ravens carry on from dawn to flow Into evening of elemental tides Lapping at edges of colorful echos From another time and place we cried Those torrents of shock as memories pried Out the notes in a sequential conclave Reminding us never to forget why Their gentle feathers and shining beaks rave. Sometimes restless ideas gather their brides Up in gossamer and jewels they gave To the grooms from the valley of bolides, Where gentle feathers and shining beaks rave. ![]() back to list |
