2011 Poetry Form Challenge

#05 Septilla, (Spanish Septet)

This seven line form was originally octosyllabic (8 syllables) but now tetrameter or pentameter are equally acceptable. There is a certain amount of flexibility with this form and there is a choice of rhyme schemes with either this one;
a. a. b. c. c. b. a. as shown below
Scars

Behind mantilla's black lace shield
her wounds lay open, near revealed.
Her body, tall and straight, is still-
yet dancing feet move fast in cries
of click-clacked pain in veiled disguise.
All watch in captivated thrill-
swift rhythms heal the scars concealed.

Bullfight

The bull is wary, scrapes his hoof,
distrusts the waving scarlet flags
toreros brandish, taunt and brag,
as picadors come close in proof
of valour- pierce his steaming hide,
he shudders, bolts into collide;
on razor horns dies purblind goof.

Leny Roovers

Recently Jem Farmer came up with a variation to the Septilla which simply consists of increasing meter. The first stanza starts with monometer, the second with dimeter, trimeter, and so on. Here is Jem's idea;
Release This Pain

I want
I need
to feed
I can't
demand
command
my want.

The doubts are strong
and reasons deep
as eyes still weep
to fears I'm wrong
I beg again
release this pain
let me belong.

I hear them start to speak
Their voices hard and curt
The harshest words that hurt
And leave my soul so weak
My need, they call it lust
No choice, it is a must
For it is love I seek

But I am cursed to live in sin
as they declared the way I'm made
so I am shunned, they say depraved
When I turn to see your girlish grin
yet I still stand with pride and smile
that pain is gone, it was worthwhile
And I know that my heart shall win.

Jem Farmer

Peggy Nelson decided to go one further and took Jem's Septilla and added a repeat to it. Each line of the monometer is repeated in the dimeter, trimeter etc;
Rose Leafs

Rose leafs
Take sniffs
Summers
Soft Trends
Moist ends
Wonders
Sweet Gifts
Rose leafs scent soft
Take sniffs most oft'
Summers sunlight
Soft trends of lips
Moist ends each sips
Wonders felt tight
Sweet gift in loft

Rose leafs most colorful
Take sniff be it blissful
Summers present in time
Soft trends to torch feeling
Moist ends express swinging
Wonders gracefully rhyme
Sweet gifts laid in graceful

Rose hidden in row must face death
Take sniff be it gross take fresh breath
In summers heat wavering speech
Soft trends abrupt screeching standstill
Moist ends no longer excites feel
Wonders displaced ending beseech
Sweet Gifts embedded now reach death.

Would you do it for me if you could
Being a man I think that you would

I beg of you please I am helpless
You are needed I am in distress
I only hope that I am not too late;
Take me now!! (To the shops for food)

Dreams Of Love

Why are both lovers drifting apart
Breaking a bond within their heart
When passion was theirs forever;
As misted eyes had proved it so
Oh why did their love have to go
They were once so good together;
Dreams of love right from the start.

They cannot see the damage done
For true love is blind to every one
And love does not ever run smooth;
Partners can sometimes over look
Words were said they both mistook
Only making up shall do to soothe;
As dreams of love again has begun.

-----

I Remember

I recall the days we sat by the ocean
Lovers entranced deep with emotion
Lost in dreams we both had shared
We watched a sunset over the sea
Romantic moments were ours to be
No other vision could be compared
Of perfect love and sweet devotion.

-----

Natures Serenity

When you wander alone thro`country fields
Amidst tall leafy boundaries that shields
The whispering barley against the breeze;
How beautiful this scene of nature can be
And oh of the wonders those eyes can see
A most natural awareness is their to please;
For an inborne calmness of dreams to yield.

Listen to the song of the wild birds praise
An uplifting choral `neath dawns sun rays
A blessing to us all who ventures through;
Far is the sound of automation and planes
Where a City of corrupt environment rains
More pleasing a haven of tranquility anew;
There shall I rest until the end of my days.

-----

Of Spring

For seasons come, and seasons may go,
The summers sun and the winters snow
A breath of Autumns vibrant of shades;
Of orange, browns, and of burnished gold
Tumbles and withers, the leaves of the old.
And with them an autumns memory fades;
Along with the winds that whistle and blow.

Then shall I embrace the dawn of Spring
And awaken to joy that love may bring
Entices images deep within my heart;
Which blossoms forth a freshness anew
Glistening with droplets of morning dew
No artistic flair can create this fine art;
Nor capture the song the cuckoo sings,

A time to be borne, to love and to cherish
Exalt in all things that grow and flourish
Rejoice in this beauty throughout the land;
Of shoots that awaken and bloom so fair
To nourish the earth which was once bare
Seek the great wisdom and understand;
That scripts of nature shall never perish.

-----

Only Love

Wisdom come help me, I have failed
In knowledge I have never prevailed
Scholarship Nil: achieved no masters;
My very muse disappears from view
I have forgotten what I once knew
A memory with too many disasters;
From a brain that is forever curtailed.

I can cook, clean, and I can but sew
I dont need brains for this I do know
And I am not quite as dumb as I look;
For when its time to sleep in my bed
I can make love to my lover instead
For this I need no knowledge book;
Within whose arms my instincts grow.

-----

Over Heated

In heat of the moment I trembled and partook
The fire deep within me gave way and overtook
Passion and desires of those great fiery flames;
Arising with ardour, in a spasmatical overflow
No man can control the emotions of a volcano
For most mortals probably perish with shame;
But when the Volcano blew the earth then shook.

-----

Paradise Lost

What was once where ponies did graze
Now the start of a developement maze
Those meadows have gone now forever;
Bricks and mortar were then built to last
And that meadow shall now be the past.
Why should beauty of nature they sever;
Do they have to start yet another phase.

Where cool streams of water once run thro'
Why would they now want to spoil this view
And run a pipeline underneath the ground;
To build a long motorway over the stream
And rob the proud villagers of their dream
Protests ignored the plans were all sound;
Goodbye to the old for something new.

Houses are needed the developers say
The country is old and has had it`s day
While the land beneath is now in need
You shall be moved to a high rise flat
That they said would take care of that
They, self riteously obsessed with greed
While the aged shall be out of their way.

-----

Reborn To Nature

When my time on this earth shall be past
And the images of my dreams are cast,
Unto the wilderness my remains shall be
Scattered to the wind from a hilltop high
There shall be no tears or no sad eye ;
I shall be honoured and so must thee
To rest with my guardian angel at last.

Look for me not in cold ranks of death
Listen to the breeze and hear my breath,
Whispering willows shall be my voice
My songs shall be the call of the wild
My touch shall be gentle soft and mild;
You shall find me then only by choice
With my guardian angels upon the heath.

Look for me not upon the wide ocean
Mermaid, shells or ancient crustacean,
I shall not dance to the surf of the tide
Nor shalt I bathe with fish in the sea
My spirit may fly with the winds so free;
Shades of a rainbow shall arch beside
Then I shall be borne again with elation.

Rocking Horse and Tiddly Winks

In days gone by when I was young
Games we played were often sung
We sang as we skipped with a rope;
And bounced a ball against the wall
To catch it again with a rhythmic call
Games were simple we had to cope;
Never bored not a tantrum was flung.

I often remember the rocking horse
The one we sang to Banbury Cross
Many a time he would creak and groan;
A disreguarded relic without a frame
Forsaken was he for another game
Now he creaks there all on his own;
Spirit now gone filled with remorse.

Then cameTiddly winks that was fun
This was a game that had to be won
Something all the family could play;
But Oh if only they all could agree
Whose turn it was supposed to be
In the end they were thrown away;
Never to be enjoyed by anyone.

Where are all the toys of the past
That were then constructed to last
Is it just that children have changed;
Have they found a brand new suitor
When inventors produced a computer
Has it now left their minds deranged;
Are they now growing up too fast?

-----

There Shall Be Light

Darkness looms on the moors this night
They shall see no day and no more light
Voices whisper through a craggy peak;
Lay silent within an earthened tomb
Returned to mother of natures womb
Only a Raven shall call from his beak;
As his spirit shrouds the sky in flight.

But out of darkness came skies of blue
Morning had broken the dawn was new
Long lost spirits returns from the loam;
The earth was nourished like time past
A Raven returns to his keeper at last
Spectres on the moors no longer roam;
And life on this earth was borne anew.

-----

Where Angels Tread

I walked in a dream where only Angels tread
And travelled thro` eternity asleep in bed
Towards skies of darkness I venture through;
Watched the path behind me fast disappear
With shooting stars and planets drawing near
But within this dream I saw a heavenly view;
Such beauty to see then filled me with dread.

Should I ever return to the World I was born
Such distance apart my sleep had been torn
Could it be here that I shall no longer possess;
The existance that I had when safe In my bed
Or could it only have been weird dreams instead
Should I again return to my world with success;
And enjoy once more a most beautiful dawn.

Marble Vase

The night lay open to the stars
the moon the clouds also mars
I lay upon the cool green grass
and painted pictures in my mind
of you and I our hearts combined
and if our time shall come to pass

Lady in Black

Behind a black lace veil she waits-

hours pass, her heart fills with fright

she smiles, for she loves her soul mate

Discarded Debris

Discarded, I stand amid debris
Alone, unable to call for help
No one to hear a silent yelp
I gaze, helpless, at laughing sea
The sand is grazing limbs exposed
Elemental curses imposed
Can you not see, can you hear me?

Each wave that brings closer my end
In vibrant blue destruction waits
I'm used, abused, at death's own gates
And metal casings rust and bend.
I die alone on sunlit beach
Beyond saving hands final reach
With nothing left to give, no friend

-----

No Mistook

My never-ending dreams reveal
That destiny still lies beyond
The horizon; a sacred bond
My mind cannot, dare not conceal
No matter how far I must walk
Or if no ears will hear me talk
To find my fate there is no deal.

Without a map or guiding book
I seek the light to make my way
And find the good in ev'ry day
My quest the time to take a look
For Nature's beauty fills my dream
In her meadows and babbling stream
My dream surrounds me, no mistook.

Decorum

She hides her face behind her fan.
As every well bred lady should.
She’s just pretending to be good.
She has already picked her man.
But her duennas fearsome eye
is guaranteed to terrify
Any young man and she can.

More or Less

We cannot conquer poverty
For poverty is relative
We aren’t all gifted equally
Some may try and achieve success
But others value money less
They don’t depend on property
in their efforts to impress.

Scar Tissue

The scars I bear cannot be seen
They still remain although unseen.
You broke my heart deliberately
To you I was only a toy.
You were aware you would destroy.
The heart I gave you foolishly.

Sneak Attack

I envied other peoples wealth
and undervalued my good health.
Striving always for success.
Until the day I realised
Good health may go unrecognised
until it’s overcome by stealth.

Affections we stumbled upon

Reached many days
Peaceful, zealous
And Splendorous
Dreams of growths phase

Bright colorful gardens
Roses smell by the score
Trees shed candy on floor
Seeing bears and chickens
Superlative delights
Surrounding dreamy flights
To place in life’s gardens

Speeding through dreams of adventure
Growing fonder of music notes
Singing in harmony song floats
Riding wildest horse in future
Fishing round for more dreamy fun
Time to hung out in the bright sun
See you in the next adventure

Hell on Earth

The time is now to set things straight
Governments giving us our fate
kids kill, government sets them free
guns out of control what dismay
We see more destruction today
Look and see or is it to late?
Unresolved problems we must wait

No prayers in school caused by person
Have you heard the Rap Crap today
kill and be killed, songs they portray
Kids chanting evil watch them run
Now we’re without parental right
Can't order kids to stop their fight
Killing, they say their having fun

No stepping outside frights to see
When the hell will our country be
Freeing parents to peace of mind
Give parents back their rights, right now!
Each day more dispute they allow
Utters displayed more you will find
Will peace come soon setting us free?

Bring us back peace on earth for all
The weak have ruined life’s far too long
Get someone incredible strong
hold tight, more destruction will fall
Take parental rights back in hands
Open eyes, see wild demands
Do it right now, do not stall!

Do you like what Satan has planned?
What’s to come; worse quicker demand
Best get down on your knees and pray
Sitting there with stressed out feeling?
More uneasy thoughts keep reeling?
More people are woken each day
Waste of breath, guess we shall be damned!

Lost In The Blues

Nothing seems to be the same
Days and nights seem to be just another game
Blue notes seem to enter each room
Can't seem to catch up with my favorite dream
What seemed to be real, has evaporated like steam
What happened to my baby, seems he's out of tune
Lost in the blues, seems like I'm the one to blame

-----

Westerly Waves

The Westerly waves crushed sea shells
Pieces of life drown in the swells
No longer to play crushed and torn
Gone, are cruel days from past at last
No thoughts of loving you, it's past
You left me scattered once scorned
I leave you shattered sea shells

Feeling colors of dark sea blue
From the shore, I wander once more
Empty hearted waves crashes on shore
Sea shells, coral reefs in each wave new
Freely I go to rid the past
Tossing, spinning gasping can't last
Memories gone, by the deep blue

Do Not Run

Don't run through life so fast that you forget
not only where you've been,
but also where you are going.
Author Unknown

Do not run so fast my friend
Life is short and too soon will end
Enjoy the scenery, and enjoy the day
Breathe in, walk slowly for a while.
Stop, look around remember each mile
Do not worry what's around each bend.

Do not forget where you have been
And never forget what you have seen
In later life you can sit and then recall
Philosophise and make it all a treat
Life is short, but it can be so sweet.
And also add your dreams to it all
Remembering you created each dream.

Do not ignore where you are going
You'll feel each rock that you are towing
Its best to travel light going a long way
As you join into the corporate race
And forget in your maddened pace
That there once was a thing called play
And life is to improve your knowing

Experience Found

Sometimes a wanderer may see many things,
And just as often many lessons learn.
Experience found as homeward he turns
In apprehension, to the past he clings.
Words spoken, promises made, he returns,
Casting his lot with chance, fear still burns.
Yet hope still lingers and once again he rings,

Her smile speaks more than words could say,
There is no doubt about his desire to stay,
And her eyes speak volumes of her intent.
They wine and dine, then share their thoughts
And find that time has damaged nought
Till finally Fate gives her willing consent,
And smiles, and waves and walks away.

-----

Fireside Memories

In the firelights flicker I see your face
A face that no longer looks at me
The sparkling eyes I no longer see
That looked at me with each embrace.
I remember times in days long past
And loving that was unsurpassed
For those memories can't be erased.

-----

Global Warming

Dark skies evoke a sense of melancholy
Where no life has been allowed to play or folly
Where are colours, the reds and browns of Autumn?
Instead it is the overall scene of flooded brown
O'er saturated land that wears a different gown
Some greens previously had been unable to come
Now all are welcome, but you need bring a brolly.

With all this water for once we're free from flame
Nature in her desire to grow has made her claim
Man is incidental and in the way, and for that
She's reclaiming her rights where e'r she can.
Some set by nature in her heat, and some by man.
Balance must be sought, not political combat,
But who causes that, do you want a name?

Had we but world and time
Had we but world and time
This coyness, Lady, were no crime
We would sit down and think which way
To walk and pass our long love's day...
Andrew Marvell..."To His Coy Mistress"

Had we but world and time
As now I love you, and shall a thousand years
I have done before, the parting leaving tears.
Had we but world and time
It shall be so again, but let them be of joy
Each parting leaving us less as natures' toy,
Had we but world and time

This coyness, Lady, were no crime
In life's springtime we will meet again
My passion driving like a man insane.
This coyness, Lady, were no crime
And you my dear so shy and oh so coy
In my heart I knew it was no ploy
This coyness, Lady, were no crime.

We would sit down and think which way
Summer is a time of light and life
Sometimes of conflict and also strife
We would sit down and think which way.
But love and patience conquers all
As one will help should the other fall
We would sit down and think which way.

To walk and pass our long love's day...
In autumn there is much more peace
And love now takes on a sense of ease.
To walk and pass our long love's day...
Familiar traits, knowing by just a touch
Or a single glance that means so much
To walk and pass our long love's day...

-----

Hearts Winter

As the frigid winter wind chills the main
So you froze my soul with your denial.
No Antarctic blast equals that refusal
And your indifference drives me insane.
That fierce love which burned so bright
Would shame the noonday sun light
Has brought darkness and inward rain.

Bitter tears flow into the cracks created
Freezing there within, as is wont to do.
Then like great boulders, rend in two,
The crumbling parts no longer mated.
How many times, if repaired, could we trust
Before finally the pieces become as dust
And what was love be never reinstated.

-----

Meeting in my bar

This is the place where I once felt so free
Instead it's become a miserable prison to me
Trapped with memories, captured in life
A stranger is talking, who used to be a friend,
Silently, I wish and pray for this meeting to end
The pain slices through me, just like a knife
Why can't things be like they used to be?

The eyes that once smiled and endeared me
Are heartless now and show no mercy
I finish my Guinness, for once not enjoyed
And always tactile, you take my hand
But now I wonder what evil you've planned
That feeling of love has become a void
I no longer want to be like they used to be.

Through all our life, all you caused was pain
But now I'm not a victim of your campaign
I pay the barmaid and then bid her farewell.
Typically in your conceit you cannot see
How the sight of you now disgusts me
And you, why don't you just go to hell,
I'd be stupid to take you back again?

-----

Naked

We are naked on a beach somewhere
Naked except for the clothes we wear
Naked because our souls are now free.
We have declared our love before the moon
A love woven tonight on her lunar loom.
Never before have we felt this esprit,
Never before was there ought to compare.

-----

Nocturne

Listen to the music our hearts are making
Dance with me as ocean waves are breaking
And the birds cry loudly to us overhead.
As we love on a dark sand beach at night
With bright stars and smiling moon for light
What more could lovers wish for their bed?
Listen to the music our hearts are making.

-----

Paparazzi

A Tarantella upon the written word,
Treadings once woven become a snare
Creating in some a desire to lay bare
Biased paragons of truth speak the absurd
Catching the unwary in their vacant stare
Hammering non essentials til they swear
That black is white and always was preferred.

Now games are crueller than realised in youth
The innocent having to search for proof
Media portrays the predator as the prey.
Pursuit of lies, and none events occur
Thus non justice cause the blameless suffer
And read ignorance what the press portray
Because the media bred all that is uncouth.

-----

Para aprender amar

Our bodies and minds conditioned by life
Must show no emotion and be stoic in strife.
To learn to love, you must first learn to cry
For too long now, my heart has been asleep
But slowly through joy, I'm learning to weep
Offer your heart before love says goodbye
Cut out the past with the sharpest knife.

I have looked in your eyes and I see your tears
You have held it inside you for all these years
Now these tears cause your heart to open again.
At last it has become the time for you to cry
As anger and frustration from inside you die
Not tears or sobs of a heart wrenched in pain
But one of being held close removing all fears.

-----

Remembering

Tiny pictures of our laughter dancing
Fragment my memory in the fire's light
Engraved into my mind the rhythm of your sight
The end of evening and the end of wondering
Your heart spoke to me in a whispered moment
When loves doors opened and released a torrent
Now is the time for passion and loves building

Starting as a whisper builds to bodies speaking
The night is left to learning the Braille of love
Until the final moments with cries to one above
Entering that world that is most appealing
We are now wrapped within that heaven
In sheets of love through time we have woven
And fireside flickers serve for remembering.

Tres Profesores (Three Teachers)

There are three teachers in my humanity
The first bade me question everything I saw
And ask who said that is the "status quo"?
Who agrees that is how things should be?
The second simply said to me, "Just go,
Travel, only then can your spirit grow",
And he was right in travelling I was free.

So, I travelled to many a foreign land,
And saw the wonders there was to show.
I travelled, and questioned wanting to grow,
But some truths from questions hid in the sand,
And not seeing them, I blindly moved on.
When I returned later they had all gone
My spirit self grew, but still it was bland.

For years I lived questioning every day,
Travelling and learning as was my way.
At night I'd dream but in the morn forgot,
Considering them to be naught but foolish
In the morning they turned into a cold dish.
Like a fly at which I would casually swat,
No-one told me to hear what dreams say.

Dreams too long ignored find the means,
And sandy questions bursting at the seams
Can find someway over the highest wall
In time realised through logic I'd lost the plot
Ignoring my dreams I had cast off the lot
And like they say pride creates many a fall
Like a bursting dam creates raging streams.

Then I heard what had been a subtle call,
Truth had called me in a voice so small
"Attainment will make you what you want to be".
I knew she was my teacher this time
"Follow your dreams and you'll be fine".
There are three teachers in my humanity
Helping me on my starwards climb.

-----

Truant

Not seeing you was like missing my heartbeat
Time's gone, I am left with a feeling of dismay
And an empty night and a far more lonely day.
A laggard, with slumped shoulders and dragging feet
Would feel happier than I do at this moment
If I could rid myself of this terrible torment
And once again feel human and complete.

-----

Understand

A warm blue sky puts man to shame
That grey haze o'er the city he's to blame,
As his smoking chimneys pollute the air.
To much to do, claiming too little time,
Or nothing to do so turns to crime,
And buys the drugs of "I don't care"
Then ecstasy takes on another name.

The lack of discipline and responsibility
Was the age that removed common sense
All we learned previous became a pretence.
Impractical people rule a committee
Of academics without experience
And usually in most cases no sense
And no understanding of what should be.

-----

Unjust Thoughts

Dark skies evoke a sense of melancholy
Where no life has been allowed to play or folly
Where are colours, the reds and browns of Autumn?
Instead it is the overall scene of flooded brown
O'er saturated land that wears a different gown
Some greens previously had been unable to come
Now all are welcome, but you need bring a brolly.

With all this water for once we're free from flame
Nature in her desire to grow has made her claim
And reclaiming her rights where ever she can.
Man's incidental, in the way, and pays the bill
Where Nature fights against Mammon's will
Some set by nature in her heat, and some by man.
But who causes it really, do you want a name?

-----

Victim of Deceit

Have you ever walked an empty street,
After the night has conquered the day?
Feeling each step, took you a special way,
Knowing that you could not retreat,
Did you question what led you astray?
Was there an author of a greater play,
In which you were the victim of deceit?

-----

Yan Yean Dreaming

There is a place where no one ever goes
It's peaceful and calm and there's no woes
It has lakes and pools of crystal clear water
Rivers with fish of diverse shapes and colours
Serene, picturesque just made for paramours
Where no harm can happen or person alter
It's in my dreams when I'm in sweet repose.

-----

You Raise Me Up

How vivid are the colours of your heart,
I know the truth and what you would impart
What we do not know we can learn together.
Do you wish to spend eternity with me
And together discover what love can be?
It's not too late we have found each other
Let our two souls finally make one part.

Allegro Assai

Her satin skin warms to his hold
as vigour mounts in bolder strokes
of bow on trembling strings, invokes
her song to open and unfold.
Arpeggios rise up, resound,
exultant climbing- peaks astound.
Descending blends in moves untold.

-----

Andante

He rests his cheek against her skin,
feels her vibrations move within;
while fingers travel, touching snares,
strong strokes of bow invite her song-
cadence of rhythm- dance prolonged.
In deep embrace both souls are bared,
as on her belly rests his chin.

-----

Rondo

Between her body and his chin
air trembles with the highest note-
he licks the moisture from her throat
as heat condensed on cooling skin.
On gentle winds their music dies
in rhythm with her fading cries;
a dulcet flow runs deep within.

Robin & Grackle

The robin chased the black-tailed grackle west,
Sparrow looked on preening, her mood quite amused
Watching the larger two flutter, for who'd
Guess they were fighting, not dancing in jest
To see which would find the window sill first,
As grasses they carry to build or burst,
A nest for the egglets, soon to be blessed.

-----

Snow Queen

Winters Queen is Mab, they say
She's all white, a cat eyed Fae,
Finger tips that scintillate
Blue green shimmering spate
Like her breath when the wind gales,
The feline voice cries then wails
Sobbing snowflakes blown away.

How vivid are the colours of your heart,
I know the truth and what you would impart
What we do not know we can learn together.
Do you wish to spend eternity with me
And together discover what love can be?
It's not too late we have found each other
Let our two souls finally make one part.

How many colors does one see?
Not knowing all the colors of any one
together we'll grow, answering questions having fun
Eternity a life forever; loving ways for you and me
Finding each other; was like an sensuously stimulating touch
So rare, so fine, a once in a life time rush
Two souls first and foremost, join together unconditionally free

Occhi Desideranti

I have looked on thee with longing eyes
Wishing my body was joined with thine,
Having won thee, thou would become mine.
I would not waste such a divine prize
Rather I would worship such a treasury.
My reward an eternity of pleasuring thee,
And even more and all that it implies.

Our eyes have spoken lovingly
Spoken clearly in perfect unison
Our love never shows comparison
We value moments of loving entirely
Moving far from where love was unkind
Two lovers playing, romancing sublimed
Our love now shows enthusiastically.
