2011 Poetry Form Challenge#03 Brisbane Sonnet |
|
The Brisbane Sonnet consists of two sestets and a couplet. The original sestet was based on the
Hymnal Octave form which has a rhyme scheme of a.b.c.b.a.b.c.b. Two of the b lines are removed and leave a
rhyme scheme of a.b.c.a.b.c. by adding another similar sestet d.e.f.d.e.f. and a couplet, g.g., this sonnet
form was born. The Hymnal used an alternating meter Iambic Tetrameter followed by Iambic Trimeter. As the Australian dialect has its own natural meter which is a mixture of Iambic and Anapest the meter was set as just any Pentameter. This sonnet form was created during a working visit to Brisbane during the floods after talking with some of the flood victims. In the example below the 14 lines have been maintained and the stanza colours changed to give a better idea of the rhyme scheme.

Jem FarmerIn visions that by starlight's gleam revealed I dreamt I felt my love's own tender kiss As it's my slumber yearnings took me there This desire that refuses to be concealed Each night it stretches o'er my heart's abyss To fill the hunger my love and I share. And in those hours we should be at our rest On my breast droops her pale flower-like cheek The scent of hair intoxicates my mind Empowered, my lips seek to meet her test We know our love can ne'er be mild nor meek As in heated dreams it is ours to find. I lift my voice to make a humbled plea As lost tears dissolve into destiny ----- Different Sunset In dreams, I see a different sunset And in the dusk, I see you softly smile Before I feel the touch of moistened lip Reminding me should I dare to forget Love is real as long as I dream awhile And let my pious inhibitions slip. In dreams I am with you every day Each night I fall asleep inside your arms And yet each morning I find you are gone If only dreams would permit you to stay And feed my love with your impassioned charms So we two once again could be as one. Not just for the night, as I lie asleep But through the day so I no longer weep ![]() ----- The Divine Image In gardens of beauty walks moonlight I feel her presence on a gentle breeze As I surrender to her sacred will In pathways darkened by the mortal night In supplication I fall to my knees And slowly lift my face upward until I feel her loving beam of silver reflect Inside me; her majesty on my breath As I learn the wisdom within her ways Beneath her lunar light I shall respect The mystery of life as found within death My new found voice at last chanting her praise Ancient Mother once more I hear your call To the lunar lady I give my all. ![]() ----- Gift of Joy All that is good, it's said, shines in virtue and loving patience waits in tender care in gentle thoughts that watch a seedling grow. One tiny seed we planted, me and you, when first we met too shy to talk and share could beauty be born from the things we know? As it so slowly grew in springtide sun its leafy shoots revealed a hidden need and newborn buds reached up towards the sky. The story called friendship had just begun just like the buds that stretched from planted seed a loving tale we found in you and I. The tender sweet blossom that calls us friend a gift of joy bound by love without end. ----- Imbolic Dream Because the sun shines, I feel the warmth of hope Through cold and biting winds, I see the signs And know the sleeping Earth returns to life. I stare past trails left by icicle ropes On to the horizon where Spring reclines In waiting for an end to Winter's strife. And when I gaze into my crystal ball I see my silver Lady dancing there A spark within the Winter's darkest hour And in her love once more I'm standing tall I know there is no reason to despair As life returns from death within her pow'r. Oh Lady hear my prayer once more tonight And grant me peace within your holy light. ![]() ----- Through the Eyes of a Witch A silent blade of grass is watching me My eyes are gazing in the lily pond While thoughts are pondering inside my mind The divine truth is all I need to see Not much to ask the crystal or a wand As all around her beauty I shall find. A Maiden's heart, it shines in purest white She lifts her face upward to feel the sun Towards the hazy winter sun, she turns The Hunter smiling rays of morning light Their story of love once more has begun As from winter's sleep life on Earth returns. My eyes are closing to this distant place And I feel divinity kiss my face ![]() ----- Without You Without you I am incomplete; alone A mere shadow of the whole that we are Without you to lift my heart it cannot beat In fear of breaking never to be one For love has taken its hold from afar Without you I am alone, incomplete. My eyes see only hazy reflections No shape nor form, just like in early light The world waits to be gently awoken My mind lingers in this introspection Waiting for whispered senses to ignite And fuel my fire in your words; unspoken. Without you, I am incomplete today Yet, still I love you in every way. ![]() back to list |
Reason A PoteetKneeling at my pew in contemplation bewildered by the news again today. My heart in prayer cries out for those who sculpt their new normal based on fragmentation - new normal formed from broken clumps of clay. The angst and hunger cause us all to gulp with indigestion, some tasty rumors - the tough fare which the media serves us with nuance and troublesome intentions. News which preys on answer-starved consumers. What's missing is the element of trust and truth which rallies comprehension. We all share the loss, we all share one God. New normal requires prayer without façade. back to list |
Ryter RoethicleSomewhere in time two lovers kissed Fate looked down and began to smile. She is not heartless and never cruel But recognised that true love exists. And so time stood still for just a while Seeing that this was indeed a jewel. Somewhere in time the lovers wished Separate upon the fullness of the moon They wished that they could be united Thus creating a mood of supreme bliss And even more that it would be soon. So fate stated they would not be parted. The moon and stars all witnessed this As somewhere in time two lovers kissed. ----- The Twenty-Four Styles of Poetry |
Bill TopperI see thee and a twinkle in thy eye A curl of lip as it hides a gentle smile Nervous touches as your fingers graze mine I long to hold you, hear my fervent sigh You are my dream alive to linger awhile It is on your heavenly charms I wish to dine Be my love and forever hold me tight What we have found is forever and a day You light up my love with all the things you do Always in my eye you are true beauty's sight It's by your side the place I want to stay You know my darling, how I do love you Our lives entwined to halves to make a whole Beyond eternity shall be out one true goal ----- Look Around You Far in the west I watch the red sunset Above the desert of long white washed sand A crimson of beauty alone in the sky A place where the earth reached the sky and they met Laced away from the orb waned a purplish band Surrounding my heart I heard myself sigh The visions of nature that are often displayed Yet many times we don't look we're too busy to see Wrapped in our daily seeking of self pleasure To see what surrounds us is often delayed So stop, smell the roses, it's really quite free And you'll find at your footsteps a bountiful treasure Take time to see enjoy a world so fine Grab hold of the beauty and let your eyes dine ----- The Masters I often hear or read the term, "thoughts by the masters," never spend time to think about it, of no import. Many so called masters come to my mind; some of word and thought and some spell casters, some of whom there is no true retort, some of whom even put my thinking in a bind. What makes a man or woman then a master? What have they done to shape the course of life? What have they done to rise in our esteem? Are they heroes of some past disaster? Have they found a way to end all of mankind’s strife? Or are they just thoughts afloat on a dark beam? I may enter meditation seeking as I wonder, Why the masters entered my brain to plunder back to list |
Nia WynneThe pure bright colors of a wild beasts heart Are tempered by the brush strokes cortex, Civilized a dull neutral brown palette As is impasto of love uncharted On the canvas of two immortal vortex, Where souls collide and conflict round atte Center of the sun as dances will do. Now the trust in fate carries little weight While atlas holds up our blue marble world We are wont to wait, not to exchew Matters of desire but build the state Of our fire, not as andirons curl'd About the branches of our universe But as worlds hurl'd together, inverse. ----- Near in Heart Confession is good for the soul they say So I must say, dear, you have my heart so Bound that it flies like a bird in heaven Whose only tie to the ground is the way You speak my name so tender and so slow It makes my pulse that flutters a given. Disclosure comes none too soon for true love So let me tell the world this blossoms fate That it may not fall before we embrace. Let this admission release loves good dove, Dear, for all my hearts desires are your gate To open, your sea to swim in with grace. Now let me fly into your arms again And let this bluebird sing a new sweet strain. ![]() back to list |
