2011 Poetry Form Challenge
#11 Keats Sonnets
A very interesting variation to the English Sonnet form is the Keats Sonnet. The main difference
is that Keats used four tercets rather than three quatrains. There is no meter specified and different
types of feet other than Iambic are permitted, ie: Trochee, Spondee and Pyrrhic.
The rhyme scheme is
The Witch of black magic, they think she's a fool
Wearing her black beads, and magical chimes
While chanting in her robe, and practicing voodoo
Inside of a circle, are candles and toodstools
Chanting and chanting, voodoo rhymes
You will fall in love, because of puppet and pins
Mixing her potions, with a dash of bamboo
Mixing into your tea, as she stands there and drools
Turning you into a zombie, in a matter of time
Dancing and playing, the tomboula drum too
She will put you in a trance, and will have you spin
You will be stalking the cemetery, in the dark of the night
While under black magic, you will smile and grin
Because you know it is better, then a vampires bite

- Through the Years
I’m sitting quietly letting my mind
wander willy-nilly where’er it will
down mem’ry lane, to events long past, dead.
I’m amazed at the emotions I find
alive.. . I believed they were fading; still
here they are as vivid as yesterday.
Some warm my heart, others make me see red,
some beautiful and others not so kind;
I feast on them until I’ve had my fill,
and then like little lambs they’re gently led
back to their corners where no doubt they’ll stay
until I let them come to light again.
Life gives joy but it can take joy away,
In much the same way that it doles out pain.
Standing Before Him
I’ll stand in awe of You forever Lord
It matters not to me what the world says;
My aim to be the best that I can be,
To please You and accept Your Holy Word...
Not just now but for my remaining days;
But I cannot succeed without Your aid
And so I implore that you assist me.
Some people think my goal is quite absurd
But I’ll continue to offer You praise,
Fully aware that I’m at Your mercy,
And that without You I’m lost and afraid.
You are My Comforter, My Strength, My Guide,
You keep me focused in Life’s great charade;
I trust that You’ll be ever at my side

In solitude of mountains aerie
He listens to the astral beings
In search of his other lives before
Another time whose roots became the tree
The life he now must be realizing
Is one that brings his Karma forward
For forwards it must march with new leaves
New chapters drawn on each page and tree
Where bark bears the marks of everything
That came and everything that does weave
Tapestries into the unknown word
No one ever spoke nor laughed about
Cycles complete yet never finished
An endless inspiration he spouts.
Key of Naught
This darkness, oh my soul, oh my soul
Comes in like the tides on ebon sands
That cover my feet and hands with fear
This fear, oh my soul, has no goal
But to hypnotise for no sure stand
It wobbles my feet and shivers my heart
Tears love and light apart with it's sear
This midnight scourge scrambles and trolls
Leaves scraps of seaweed dried and bland
Strewn in my hair like deaths crown veneer'd
Till he comes along that plucks thorns out
This trembling palm to sooth emtpy thoughts
This universes hollow won't depart
Yet sing depressions keys of naught.

Sing to me again, my unseen friend,
Who tugs at all my senses, begging
A poem for every past transgression.
Words fly forth from soul to pen,
Pages filled with love or pain, sending
Notes in reams to a hidden tempter.
Teasing forth intense emotions,
Fiery feasts consumed in rapture, sent
Secrets threaded into stories spilling.
Seasons change; but heat of my obsession
Thawed not in winter's icy grip, but lures
Another purging ritual be told.
Pensive hours spent, find such simple treasures
In a muse who warms a heart once cold.
The saw marks visible, rough-hewn woods rise
up the walls to support the eaves,
formed by the now-silent mill in Preston.
Small the yard is, barely more in size
than the house itself, but the leaves
from a nearby plum tree fall in the back.
Formerly, they say it was a grange, undone
by fire and resurrected from demise
into a house. Hence, the oddities, one believes.
The wood-stove for heat, I scoffed at, not one
to suffer cold in quiet, but I found no lack
of warmth in this winter's chill. A pile
of wood out back is gathered and I stack
yet another log onto the fire, and smile.
In trying to write a sonnet
My thoughts, not focused yet, seem somewhat askew,
like fleeting wisps of potentials there, yet
not swirling to a pointed thing, one thought.
An idea occurs; the wisps begin a retinue,
like moths around a flame. They pirouette
and start a dance to score that has a form.
In awe, it seems I watch, as words are caught
and held together, tentatively at first, a few
did fall in place, tumble in my ear, then set.
An image takes shape. So funny, it is wrought
and teased from whirling wisps within a storm,
to stop and shine so brightly, for a time.
That restless energy, with freedom as its norm,
did a dance across my page, in tiny steps of rhyme.
I remembered that place.
A poem, a vehicle, so bright,
swept me back there again.
The waking moments, a joy, to lace
my vision with Love's sight.
The eyes that laid things bare.
Keenest was the parting pain,
each flow with ebb, to retrace
now my first steps into flight.
Words, links in a growing chain
of remembering that place there,
here, where Love's touch is felt.
All of eternity is Love's share,
and remembering Her place, I melt.
What can I seek?
So, what am I to do,
when a vault, close and hidden,
is opened to vision within its dark chamber,
breath sucked in, and eyes behold - desolation? No hue
of warmth or comfort, no welcome to be bidden
from winter's storm into warm reverie.
So, where do I go, when search yields but a harbinger
of cold fire? No floors, no rungs to cling to,
former hand-holds crumbled into dust and ridden
by phantoms, ghosts of the past, that now only linger
to haunt me. No vision of perfection did I see
when into that dark chamber I did peek.
So, now, what can I be?
So, now, what can I seek?

No Need to Weep
As clouds descend on sounds of nightbirds' cries,
The weight of sorrow falls and comes to rest.
Thick blankets billow, blotting out the stars
And smother dreams in darkness’s disguise.
An aching heart still flutters in its breast,
So weak, yet holding promises to keep.
It quivers, finding places without scars,
For strength to see the gift in burdened skies.
Faint music sifts between the layers depressed,
A wafting serenade sent from afar,
Now straining through the clouds to one who sleeps.
Melodious awakening, Clair de Lune.
In shadows of the dark, no need to weep.
Above night’s eiderdown, there shines the moon.
No Words of Love
I cannot speak with words of love this night
I heard your laughter echo through my mind
It mixed with hers; a hollow ridicule
I wonder if she sees your eyes as bright
Or has she spied the frozen one so blind
It matters not who now lives in your spell
A potent one belying one so cruel
Who hid behind his fears and lived in spite
And I the one that fate chose you to find
I trusted you with all my heart, a fool
As innocence was drained before I fell
A shattered soul who since has raised her head
To see inside your empty lonely shell
I have survived; my love for you is dead.
No Words of Love II
I have survived; my love for you is dead.
For dead is what it always was, I find,
As I look back and read again each page.
The script I spoke, was born inside your head,
My words were used to feed your empty mind,
Such comic acts with tragic overtones.
Too many plays at once were on our stage,
With back drops of illusion painted red.
Facades like masks betrayed the truth behind
The curtains as they fell each night enraged,
A final act that hid all the unknowns.
Reviews are in, this long-run show is done.
Illuminated playbill stands alone.
Now Freedom’s Flight, sweet solo, has begun
back to list
And Love Began
What is this feeling that tugs at my heart
That renders me helpless so deep inside
A repose so restless throughout the night
That happens the while we are so far apart:
And to crave for his touch I feel gratified
For soft are his kisses that brush my skin
I know then that this future shall be bright
These passions within shall be but an art;
No dream nor illusion of love is satisfied
In reality we lovers shall dance to excite
Let no man quote these pleasures as a sin
For the joys of passion shall e- er be a part ;
From now and thereafter since earth did spin
Lovers to the end as were from the start.
Once I saw you standing in the mist of time
A shadow of strength deep within my eyes
For it was then I felt the sun upon my face
To awaken tender words of love sublime;
Thy sonnet of love echoed from the skies
And I knew then thy spirit again was found
Cherishing always the love of thy embrace
Experiencing warmth within natures clime;
And notes of sweet content in lovers sighs
For touches that linger gently shall retrace
Loving hearts shall always become bound
For they in another time hath loved before;
Within echos from the past shalt resound
To treasure this gift of love forever more.
Dreams Of Love
Oh my love I cannot stop dreaming of thee
My whole being lies awake yearning thy touch
That my eyes shalt ne`er surrender to sleep
Within thy arms thou art such comfort to me
That I know in my heart I love thee so much;
Come to me now my love within my dream
That we may feel where passion runs deep
It shalt be then these tensions shall be free
To feel both our needs are the same as such;
For this love thro` time was forever to keep
Through passing of time shall reign supreme
Prophesies of an entity forever should be;
All that we dreamed of our love to redeem
To remain both together thro`all eternity.
What jewels they had in bygone dayes
What worth there charms once to thee
Amidst the green meadows blowing wild
Grew precious gems aglow with praise;
An abundance of daisies growing free
For busy little fingers to pluck therein
Spurns imagination of a mindful child
Weaving her creation of skill displays
A faerie princess she planned to be;
With a crown of daisies so beguiled
Enchanted dreams from deep within
Simply with nature when a child plays
Her sweet memories shall then begin;
To remain inwards then and always.
I hath been truly loved and been forsaken
And thus my heart has now broken in two
Why has this love we had come to end
Could it be we were both mistaken;
We seemed so close when true love grew
Why then are spirits now lost in flight
Have we not hope hearts shall amend
Come now my love I am truly shaken;
For deep was our love and surely true;
Much more together than a mere friend
How can you take our sorrow so light
Times we parted were all but a few;
Shant we surrender when lovers fight
You know in your heart I still love you.
So softly thy whisper sweet words of love
A warmth from thy arms doth hold me dear
This togetherness doth calm my senses much
And I praise in awe of thy affection hereof;
Oh how I doth change when thy hold me near
Dark shadows of the past hath faded and gone
When I feel the gentleness of thy loving touch
Thy touch that caresses and nurtures thereof;
This blessing of love shalt forever be sincere
With heart and soul I shalt treasure thee such
To emerge from the dark to a brand new dawn
Bathed in this calmness from the spirits above;
Thus glorified love from scriptures once drawn
So soft were the plumes of a white turtle dove.
John Keats Finale
Within his words her lips she had pressed
So many rhymes composed of their dreams
Of love from a heart that was then ailing
So deep was the love they both possessed;
Such is the irony of a fate that schemes
Of an illness that he could never endure
With this outlook of his death prevailing
No wonder his torment was so stressed
For both had planned unto high extremes;
But his condition was then speedily failing
Failing to take his life in a desperate lure
Composed a sonnet of love his final quest;
His lover was as always precious and pure
Within his life he had once been blessed.
John Keats Revisited
Remembered in a maze of timeless song
Finely composed from a master of his art
He wrote with passion of his undying love
For within his young heart she did belong,
Too soon shalt thy presence of love depart
What sadness and grief as death prevailed
But thy spirits arose to the heavens above
He who was weak, shall no more be strong,
Oh how his love of life, was then torn apart
Thy name was taken from thy cask thereof
His followers insisted that this was wrong,
Young English Poet on his tomb stone hailed
This final request was bequeathed lifelong
No more no less thy modesty had entailed.
Doth thine eyes tell me all I want to know
When thy glance at me the way thy do
Is this love thou speak of or be it lust
For within thine eyes these feelings show;
So deep shalt the passions of love be true
For I hath shared affections only with thou
And with this love thou hath earned a trust
To be as one whilst these moments doth glow;
When time passes`tis love which shines thro
This passion ignored wouldst be most unjust
For love in the future groweth stronger now
Within thine eyes sayeth how much thy care;
Whilst a cherished love shalt we both endow
Together once more our love we shalt share.
Salve Virgo Virginium
Hail to the virgin of virgins I pray,
Blessed be to thee,for pure covenant
Thy hath ne`er tasted the fruits of love
For temptations thy hath turned away,
Holy rightiousness, chastity thy incant
Thou hath sworn the oath of pure dedication
To the great Mother of Virgins from above
She hath the power and the glory this day;
Wanton desires, in her chant implant
Shalt ne`er be a part of her wrath thereof
No thoughts in her mind of fornication;
She must remain in her future to be
Complete and chaste with pure motivation
Thy virgin of virgins ordained fantasy.
Sonnets Of Love
This treasure I should hold unto my heart
A volume of sonnets from thee to me
Composed of love from thy depths within
For thy priceless gift I shalt ne-er depart
Oh how tender thy sweet words canst be;
How joyous this feeling of love implant
My heart doth flutter so deeply therein
How canst I not treasure this work of art
Within thine eyes shalt be love that I see;
Why did I say they would think love a sin
Thy words of affection canst only enchant
Love with no ending was ours from the start
The seeds of passion shalt ever transplant;
From thy sonnets of love I shall never part.
Spirits Of Passion
When love groweth strong every passing day
Heavenly stars seem brighter than before
A gentle touch depicts thrills down the spine
Provocative and teasing of lovers at play
Passionate longing enhanced by much more;
How they long to be enclosed upon this night
To become one they may share a love divine
Whispering kisses affectionately display
Significance of lovers willing to explore;
Enhancing that moment when limbs entwine
Divine spirits of yore returned to re-unite
From their darkened tomb, bed of the past
Rekindling desires once more to re-ignite
Ordained for eternity a new dawning cast.
What does she dream of so high in the tree
Perched on the boughs on top of her world
So deeply within herself completely alone
Perusing the leaves of a book on her knee;
Lost in her haven of contentment unfurled
A far cry away from the maddening crowd
What does she dream of there on her own
Up high in her fort where all she does see;
Through ancient boughs of buds uncurled
A vacated nest where a song bird had flown
Her endless haven of tranquility she vowed
Was the only place she had yearned to be;
Within these wishes of pleasure unbowed
She dreams peacefully within her fantasy.

As golden rays defer to purple sky
And vibrant hues of amber blend to pink
Reminding me of nights I spent with you.
Yet still I sit and wonder how, and why
The seas mutate to mellifluous ink?
So can my dreams end so love can begin
Reflecting moonlight in silver white dew,
As I recall your last silent goodbye,
That left me here with only thoughts to think,
No words to say, and nothing left to do,
But feel the pain within empty chagrin.
I ask if the sun will see tomorrow,
Releasing the darkness that I am in
So my heart may know no more this sorrow.
Because - (Experimental)
I’ll be your armoured knight who holds your hand
And wipes a lonely tear to comfort you
Because you’re my lady, I will be there.
I’ll take your hand and dance across the sand
And show you love with everything I do
I’ll show you beauty by the lunar light
Because you’re my lady, I will be there.
I’m by your side wherever you should stand
Our destiny to find in yonder blue
Because you’re my lady, I will be there,
To hold your heart throughout the darkest night
I’ll be there through thick and thin, all the while
To bare your pain and all that brings you fright
So in the morning sun I see your smile.
Delicious scents of cocoa tease the nose
While baking a cake for candles to crown
A tender greeting for a birthday treat
As brightly wrapped parcels gently repose
All chosen with care so my love is shown
Today it is her I shall celebrate.
My passion baked into morsels, sweet
My love declared with a scented, red rose
And breakfast in bed needs no dressing gown.
It is her love that made my life complete
From that first tender kiss on our first date
I’ve welcomed the warmth she placed in my heart;
Now love’s wants and needs can anticipate
As from her side I can never depart.
Following John Winston
It’s window shopping for second hand shirts,
And short date bargains dictating the meals
as composing-words barely meet the rent.
A lipstick smile conceals the hidden hurts
As no one can ever know how she feels
Through unwelcoming streets she walks back home
Her mind still churning stories to invent,
Another dark thinking to love converts
Ignoring the fights and the drug den deals
The modern life invades without consent
Yet love walks where’er she chooses to roam
In dirty back streets or by golden pond
As fingers through her chestnut tendrils comb
So the poet has learned to see beyond.
Here in silence there is no single voice;
No sound but trees that whisper to the ground
And touch the soul with spiritual embrace.
Here in silence a heart can sing, rejoice
In beauty that shines from natural ground
And echoes love we share with Mother Earth,
In ev’ry flower eyes can glimpse her grace.
Here in silence a prayer can make its choice,
A soul that lost its way at last is found
Because I saw the beauty in her face,
Here in silence the moment of rebirth,
My heart began to beat, I came alive.
It’s in her love I feel both joy and mirth
And know there is nothing I’ll not survive!
Immer In Meinem Herzen
Those sensual aromas caress the air
As you, my love, swayed to the ancient drum
The story of rhythm, of you and me
Intrigued by romance and my maiden fair
Essence of taste like Caribbean rum
This truth exposed I could no longer hide
And you became my sweetest destiny.
Yet now my heart can only feel despair
With ravaged senses yearning to be numb.
Oh love once released me to set me free
Where deepest longings were safe to confide
In her grace love’s emotions I had seen
As fate dictated I should be denied
All but memories of my dancing queen!

Replant the plots, that weigh the wasted ground,
their story has been told, and etched in blood
for all God's generations to behold.
The austere bone-white chronicles have browned
from ages of remorse. A sprouting bud,
too long confined, supplants the forests vast.
The phantom trees, still dance upon the wold,
their roots long ago forged in iron and drowned
into the sea. She crests the fostered flood
and glides towards horizons gilt with gold.
An argonaut swell, rippling from the past,
foreshadows the ends of her loveliness.
Askance, she tacks the wake, a mermaid cast
a-prowl, the crooked path to happiness.

Magicians of the air
In swirl of cloak and tilt of hat magicians of the air
hauntingly lay down at the feet of heaven’s door
substantial evidence of well embedded dreams.
Palms up an open plea for gratuities deemed fair,
sideways leans a symbol of needing so much more,
and magic waits and listens for the beating of a heart.
Harmoniously in tune beats pound the halls of sleep
and the instrument of love ensnared with a prayer
welcomes in a world not ever known before.
Soul weeps amidst the dream; who dares her boundaries
and heals the wound restraining emotion of the past
so deftly and invasively to overthrow the mind?
Unbeknown magic dreams kick-start heart to last
and time the only factor in awakening love’s light!

I Miss You Baby
I miss you baby
Your tight fitting jeans
Black magical wear
I miss you baby
all times true love means
A trance we both spun
Miss your bodies hair
I miss you baby
Movements of love leans
Sickness robbed love fair
May days brought brief sun
My heart song of love
Can Sir dance has won
Mate with you above
Most Wanted Monster
Silence presides above and below
Silence of peaceful comfort divine
Silence to remanence a casual flame
Silence consuming silent waters flow
Silence entertaining pleasures so fine
Silence for loving illusions I concede
Silence to endeavor without blame
Silence comes softly, ever so slow
Silence has erupted my written line
Silence drifts helping others be tame
Silence no more; music suits my need
Silence was immensely to long for me
Silence! I need no more this day to feed
Silence I plead; after crash, bang of reality
What a Doll
Inhaled the sweet breath of a gentle breeze
A Smell to excite my senses to inhale more
The sent I know to well to follow till found
Hidden in our forest cabin to play and tease
His fragrance lingered closer as I opened door
Going to find him soon, most likely on bear rug
Silence as I took off the blind fold; no sound
His scent now covered by firewood on leaves
An unusual smell accompanied; what’s in store?
My mind and heart raced with a leap and bound
Before my eyes, laid a women on our rug snug
She was pretty, I knew then I lost my boyfriend
I stepped closer, seen his toy doll was on our rug
Teasing; he tossed doll, we hugged till nights end

Butterflies count not months, but moments in time.
Each time we kiss my heart stops for a moment
That is time enough for them but little time for me
With each kiss, a wondrous feeling, so sublime
Lips soft as powdered wings wake up senses sentient
Like wings unfolding, open now, ready for souls to meet.
Words whispered softly in truth "I love thee"
Stroking each others souls in ways Lepidoptrine
Deep sounding truths not just now but ever meant.
And as the butterfly hovers above you look at me
I feel the flutter of wings, a feeling so complete
These brief moments in time, her complete life span
What is eternity to us simply an ordained feat
The love of a woman and the love of her man.
What is your desire my lady
Do you wish the moon and the stars?
They’re already in your smile and eyes.
But you know they are yours already,
To see one does not have to look far
No further than here, see my loving bow
Let’s wander together in heavenly skies,
To grant your wishes I’m always ready
I promise, this is my eternal vow.
I promise you my love will ne’r demise
You need say no words to me now,
For all things we will accomplish.
Take your cello; I am your bow,
And play me, as you wish.
I must write these words whilst they are alive
I need to frame the smile you make in my mind
That passes without so much as conversation.
For those words would no longer survive
They would escape and be impossible to find
In the sanity and sobriety of what is today.
Curve of lips and brows fill my collection
That is impossible to never want revive
Yet to verbalise, words are difficult to find.
So in haste I bid all distractions, "Begone!"
In your eyes is a place, I remember yesterday,
A sacred place, in which I would often relive.
I will allow not anything to get in my way
Your indulgence and my absence please forgive.
My green thoughts are not about saving the world
Rather, usually about enjoying a plant or tree
Just thoughts that my mind paints in my head.
Nor do I believe everything that I am told
I’m no longer gullible like I was at one and three, (13)
I know now the politics of religion and life.
As a teen I believed all was good that was said
But found out life’s faults as mine unfurled
And most people presented things as they see.
Now as in the past a lot of people have bled
In ways far more subtle than the assassins knife
I know religion’s still used to control man
Realising media is the weapon that causes strife
And that evil will use it whenever it can.
Now finally, the time has come to part.
It was so short a time, yet it seems so long
We have grown to know each other so well.
The time spent together, took so long to start
And yet we grew close, was that so wrong
Who must we answer to, except you and I?
Insanity arrived and broke the spell
And it keeps us divided and apart
Stranger, we believe that we belong.
What the future holds no one can tell
And I for one dare not venture to try
Fate’s gift is ruining the best plans of man
Whilst we poor mortals struggle by
Forever trying to do the best we can.
I saw the sun consumed by gentle waves,
Deeper and deeper it sank into the sea
Till only brilliant golden shafts remain.
What the day has had the night never saves
Devouring, rather than let anything go free
At times left in darkness, with naught at all.
What lack of care, does she consider us insane,
And so complacent, getting all she craves,
Showing man her power with all her victories?
Telling him that he is inferior in the main,
That his power against her is very small
And like every power should show respect.
Because some men show no respect at all
What else but distain can we expect?
Let Me Dance
Let me dance within thy soul, calling out thy name,
Kisspering words that make thee feel thou art mine
And get lost within, finally blending with thy soul.
Each day I hope and pray for thee to feel the same
Quench thy thirst on me and make me thine
I will be thy pillow, thy blanket, and thy bed.
Apart two halves, but together we become whole
Moving in thee, until thou cries out aflame
Where at last, our bodies and souls combine.
Thou hast shown willing and given me thy all
For that I will give thee all that has been said
And will write thy name amongst the stars,
So, in future times our love will shine ahead
And, more certain still, eternity will be ours.
My wings have covered the tapestried earth
Seing the shot blue silk of the sea, reborn
Flying high, flying where birds cannot fly.
So high! So high! seeing the sun give birth
As I’m soaring under Cancer and Capricorn
Over the tamed and conquered mountains.
My wings pattern the silent and sunlit sky
Where cloud pennants came forth from birth
The world below opening greeting the dawn
My wings passed the golden morn on high
Over where I now rule as its sovereign
And my wings whisper and sing in flight
Come end of day I can see moonlight begin
So I descend now towards the night.
Your perky words what do they suggest
Am I to wait here with this question?
Or act on it, and perhaps regret later?
To forward with my wish that you digest
The truth, you have become my one obsession
Am I too forward and thus driven you away?
Must I admit that my desire is greater?
I’m not prepared, unready to take the test
To face the entire world, make my confession
Do not leave me, do not become bitter!
My intent is such that you would bid me stay
And in staying seek an answer to our dreams.
But reality has hit me with the break of day,
And walk away to concentrate on lesser things.
Silent creatures, in stealth they sniff the wind,
So soon tonight a victim comes into range
As slumbers ended, emerging from their place.
Chameleons of death, searching for who has sinned
Moving, see how easy their colours change,
Shadows, feeding on souls, more than mortal death.
There will be others tonight caught without grace,
In fact anyone these creatures are able to find
To soon these hapless victims had best be braced.
Tonight its man not beast that will be chased
Fear is the scent, and blood tasted on the breath
And running man is no match for slavering beast,
One more is sacrificed to the evil God Seth
This time man provides creature with the feast.
Spring is when Nature comes alive
The air is clear and all life is new
Blossoms bloom on bush and tree
With worker bees rushing from the hive
On their daily task to help life renew
And for this task each plant gives in return
A drop of honey to this busy bee
Just rewards for helping to survive
Knowing for every task a fee is due
Never holding back Nature pays the fee
Nor is there any need for concern
This is the simple way that all life knows
Every year this way new life returns
Begins to procreate and so life grows.
Walk with me
Walk with me; let me share my life with you.
Learn with me; show me your inner beauty,
I’m called by daydreams that speak your name
Whilst you’re an endless mystery giving no clue.
Let me care for you, it would be an easy duty
A smile on your face is a thousand smiles on my soul.
I do not fear what you can learn, there is no blame
I am your light in darkness, knowing that I am true
Your safe landing should you fall, holding you to me.
In the night we will whisper and play loves games
I will not keep you from sleep, you make me whole
Our love song is music, soothing, soft to the ears,
Quenching thirst, sating hunger as our desires call
And you will shed only the happiest of tears.
Yesterday and Tomorrow
Should I roll away time from my mind
And make love to you as we did then
It will easily roll away the centuries.
Shall I play and tempt you till you find
Memories return to those other times when
We played and touched so many times before.
It will easily roll away the centuries
To events and fruits of so many kinds
Awakening your mind and mine ye ken!
It will easily roll away the centuries
When first your voice invited me explore,
To sip the wine and taste the fruits of love.
Now across the centuries I want you more
Sharing the bounties we know so much of.

Birds, (Tailed Sonnet)
My garden is a treat for hungry birds,
with peanut garlands decorating trees
and empty flower pots offering seed.
Blue-jays and blackbirds flee winter’s blizzards,
jackdaws and gulls screech, fighting for cheese.
By wren and robin, spills of war are doffed-
"waste not, want not" was the word, they’d agreed.
A pair of magpies drops by, they have heard
there’s a feast on the menu- fat cookies.
On top of the shed I put bread to feed
skinny sparrows but the crows fight them off.
Hugging a chimney, the heron keeps warm,
searching for fishponds he utters a cough.
Against silver skies, a swan’s graceful form.
Still hidden from this scene,
a cat crawls near, eyes glean
the gentle pair of doves-
in brutal jumps ends love.
Precautions make us overconfident-
in surprise actions precious life is spent.

Midnight, a night of full moon;
sulphur clouds, orange and yellow,
swathe the dirty city of steel,
plume from smokestacks each afternoon.
The moon’s phosphorescence, through the window,
washes over a crowning head;
harsh glints of light reveal
forceps dealing a painful turn
to the head grasped in its spoon-like hollow;
the child is pulled forth with relentless zeal.
They hold her up, her bruised head
unbowed, battered but unbeaten,
her eyes meet mine, no word is said,
but I am, in that moment, love smitten.

Through the Years
A floating collage of memories made
winter’s grey disburse and embraced my heart
with yesterday’s seconds I’ve shared with you
moments, fragile as silence’s blank shades
invisibly connected from the start
each one revisited like an old book
as I turn each page the past becomes new
no yellow pages this love does not fade
it remains untouched by time like great art
nothing can ever erase what is true
these flashbacks fill voids like spring rains fill brooks
buried treasures I’ve opened to the light
flood my senses with joy with just one look
like the first time we met on a spring night
