2010 Poetry Theme Challenges

#03 Ballroom Blitz

Already we are rushing towards Valentine's day so in the spirit of romance this challenge falls back on an old love affair between music and poetry. I thought we could all take to the dance floor. Whether it be a sensual tango, an elegant waltz, a jitterbug or rap. The challenge - capture the essence of dance in your words.

Who Do Mambo

Mon Dieu, said the Hindoo, I don't want to stop drinking. Who do?
But sometimes you have to put down your glass so you
can pick it up for another round. At the University Ladies' Tea
with the pill-popping dean's wife and Marxist shrews,
you don't want to talk to them or anyone else. Who do?
But like Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady you say
How do you do, call on Andrew Marvell and George Herbert
to rescue you, but you draw the short straw,
and there's Julie Andrews in The Sound if Music with her igloo
smile and Christmas sweater. You are the Sioux
in this cavalry charge, and you need some firewater pronto,
gin and lighter fluid or a gun, but that's so American,
and who would you shoot but yourself, so you try to spin some voodoo
around this vampire soirée. Where are the chicken bones
and bat fangs when you need them, Miss Nancy Drew?
Face facts, you don't have a clue. Let me preview
my upcoming bout of spinal meningitis for you,
or shall I invoke Bob Dylan, mathematician and Hebrew
troubadour, for I am tangled up in glue or something like it, goo
or ooze. If I were a cow, I'd be bigger than I am, say moo
and pray to Shiva, but as it is, I am a fourth-rate kangaroo
praying for rescue in a bottle, my mind a zoo,
a giraffe popping out my left ear, a zebra out my right. Whew,
that hurt, but so much does these days. Much Ado
About Nothing, that's my play, Beatrice and crew. Let's review.
Everything I adore is either forbidden to me or taboo,
which is pretty much the same thing. O Alice, I grew
an inch with that one, or was it my nose? Hey, Pinocchio, you
want me to chop you for firewood? Who do? Wait, I have a few
things to say about hue. I'm orange but, carissimo, you
are as blue as you were the day Picasso, or was it Braque, drew
you in Montmartre in the Bateau Lavoir, and now that my shoe
is wedged in my mouth again and my underpants askew,
I'll take this opportunity to bid you an affectionate adieu.
Parting is such sweet sorrow that I would pitch some woo
with you till next Wednesday; O Shiva, the queue
to your divine brain is teeming with supplicants, so in lieu
of the old one-two, I'll sign off. Something nasty just blew
in from Kazakhstan, and my electric bill's twenty years overdue.
Mirror, mirror on the wall-Oh, God, not you.

Carnival Fever

Its carnival in Trinidad
The people are ‘getting on bad,’
Time for pan, calypso and brass,
Man, woman and child ‘playing ‘mas’
Party hearty, time to be glad...
It’s carnival in Trinidad.

It’s carnival in Trinidad,
And it seems everyone’s a tad
Crazy; it’s just a passing phase
That will last only a few days,
It’s not that we have all gone mad…
It’s carnival in Trinidad.

It’s carnival in Trinidad,
It’s no time to be feeling sad,
The whole island is on fire,
With folks wearing chic attire,
Whilst some are outrageously clad;
It’s carnival in Trinidad.

It’s carnival in Trinidad,
Before I forget let me add
It’s a show that’s beyond compare,
You’d understand if you were here,
I can guarantee that it’s ‘rad’!
It’s carnival in Trinidad.

The Dance Goes On

I

I think about how much he loved to dance,
And truth be told he did it very well,
And that is why we never missed the chance
To take the floor, if even for a spell;
And we would have a ball, ‘twas clear to tell.
Those memories are precious, dear to me,
And though he is long gone they’ll always dwell
Within my heart: and I am sure that he
Is dancing still to music heavenly…
I swear at times I hear the melody.

II

‘Please dance with me,’ he’d said when we first met,
And I accepted, so we took the floor.
I believed that we would have just one set
But it soon became clear there would be more,
And so we danced until our feet were sore.
Fate’s music does not always match our song
Sometimes it interrupts with its own score,
And we have no choice but to go along.
I did not hear that final note that bore
Him away, but it cut me to the core.

III

I knew my life would never be the same,
For everything changed on that fateful day
And even as I ranted, raged and blamed
Anyone, for somebody had to pay,
The world continued on its merry way;
The sun still shone as it was wont to do,
The stars still came out every night to play,
And that old moon still emerged right on queue.
There are times when life serves us a rough game,
And if we miss a step we end up lame.

Come Dance With Me

Underneath the moon and starlight together,
Gather me in your arms that we may dance,
Lets cherish this night of passion forever
Come now draw me closer to your heart,
Dancing to the rhythm in hypnotic trance
Whisper, endearing words of deep affection
A soft gentle melody enticing romance
Nearness for us is a mutual selection,
A warm embrace with love and protection
This dance entwined, now in blissful perfection.

Dance To The Four Winds

Let the winds gust forth and blow on their land
Bring forth the rains to cleanse blood of old
From ancestors, of their great Cherokee band
That they may soon rise proudly from the fold
And nurture back the corn, to a land of gold
Respecting mother nature for this chance.
Embracing with arms toward the bitter cold
With pride and dedication in their trance
To the rhythm of the great drum they chant
And dance to the four winds giving thanks.

Better Tomorrows

Desire ignited on the dance floor
Encouraged by sweet tasting wine
Shyly sampled by longing lips
Testing the word on my tongue
Identity revealed in love's game
No longer accepting denial
Yet secrecy had to prevail

Fear beyond hope of revival
Outwardly love hid behind smiles
Uttering expected answers on cue
Normality became surreal torment
Duelling with blades of insanity.

Soul Spirits

With naught but air beneath our feet
We dance as one, just you and I,
Across the Moonlit, starry sky
As in our hearts, soul spirits meet.
In clouds that carry dancing feet
I hold you close to kiss your face
And speak the words of love with grace
As in our hearts, soul spirits meet.
But with the sun the stars retreat
And dreams now fade to bring the day
Yet love still shines in words we say
As in our hearts, soul spirits meet.
There's naught but air beneath our feet
As in our hearts, soul spirits meet.

Dancing to loves tune (Sonnet)

Dancing to loves tune, spin and turn
The fever of love causes you to burn
Inside your heartbeat skips and pounds
Your eternal love forever resounds
And whilst apart your innards churn.
Your lover's steps you quickly learn
Bodies touching as you nightly yearn
The sensuous tempo of loving sounds
Each night to loves dancing we return
Souls locked in a heavenly sojourn
Earthly bodies lie on silken grounds
In a ballroom fit for loving rounds
There is no contest, no points to earn
We all win when dancing to loves tune.

Dancing to loves tune (Pantoum)

Dancing to loves tune, I spin and turn
Inside my heartbeat skips and pounds
The fever of love causes me to burn
My eternal love for you resounds

Inside my heartbeat skips and pounds
And whilst apart my innards churn.
My eternal love for you resounds
My lover's steps I quickly learn

And whilst apart my innards churn.
The sensuous tempo of loving sounds
My lover's steps I quickly learn
In a ballroom made for loving rounds

The sensuous tempo of loving sounds
Each night to loves dancing we return
In a ballroom made for loving rounds
Souls locked in a heavenly sojourn

Each night to loves dancing we return
The fever of love causes me to burn
Souls locked in a heavenly sojourn
Dancing to loves tune, I spin and turn

Dancing to loves tune (Huitain)

Dancing to loves tune, you spin and turn
Inside your heart thuds, and skips and pounds
Loves eternal dance will forever resound
Whilst the fever of love causes you to burn
And when apart your innards twist and churn.
The sensuous tempo that loving always makes
As your lover's steps with pleasure you learn
Bodies touch knowing there are no mistakes.

Dancing to loves tune (Saraband)

Dancing to loves tune, spin and turn
The fever of love causes you to burn,
But whilst apart your innards churn.

Inside your heartbeat skips and pounds
And your lover's steps you quickly learn
Bodies blending on your nightly sojourn
With the sensuous tempo of loving sounds

Your eternal love forever resounds
Each night to loves dancing we return
In a ballroom fitted for loving rounds.

Earthly bodies lie on silken grounds
There are no rules in love, no bounds
There is no contest, no points to earn,
Love gives all to which you yearn.

Dancing to loves tune (Stave Stanza)

Dancing to loves tune, spin and turn
The fever of love causes you to burn
Inside your heart skips and pounds
Your eternal love forever resounds
Be it cloudy sun or brightest moon
We all win dancing to loves tune.

And whilst apart your innards churn.
Your lovers steps you quickly learn
Bodies touching with nightly rounds
The sensuous tempo of loving sounds
That lasts forever and ends too soon
We all win dancing to loves tune.

Each night to loves dancing we return
Souls locked in a heavenly sojourn
Earthly bodies lie on silken grounds
In a ballroom fit for loving rounds
There is no contest, no points to earn
We all win dancing to loves tune.

Dancing to loves tune (Envelope Quintet)

Dancing to loves tune, spin and turn
Inside your heartbeat skips and pounds
There is no contest, no points to earn
Your eternal love forever resounds
And the fever of love causes you to burn.

Then whilst apart your innards churn.
For bodies touching in nightly rounds
For any music that brings your love back
To a sensuous tempo of loving sounds
With your lovers steps so quickly learnt.

Each night to loves dancing we return
Earthly bodies lie on silken grounds
We all win when dancing to loves tune.
In a ballroom fit for loving rounds
With souls locked in a heavenly sojourn.

Early Dawn

In the early dawn of our love
you taught my heart to dance
and with blessings from above
I am praised with your glance.
To ordinary mortals this is romance
but I simply call this love heaven
I am wounded with Cupid’s lance
in feeling it I am raised above men
only seeking now ways to enhance
our love and continue this trance.

-----

Lady and Knight

Who were we, when we danced last night,
Dancing and romancing well unto dawns light
It was not the first time, nor will it be the last
It will be our future, as it has been our past
You are my Queen, my lady, I am your knight
Who were we, when we danced last night?

Totentanz

Come all ye spirits the church bells toll
Thirteen times now the bell has rung
Awaken all ye rotting dead
Ye're all dancing to what Deaths sung.

In the pale light of the Hallows moon
See as over the graves he stands
One lightning flash and thunder roll
Death takes his fiddle in his skeletal hands.

The bow scrapes o'er the suffering strings
No need for tuning to be right.
For life and balance only rule the day
Death and cacophony rule the night.

So the dancers are called to dance
And crawl out of their rotting graves
And beasts that always shun the light
Emerge from stinking caves.

The fiddler starts his hellish dirge
Echoing through the pits of hell
And some of Satan's creatures join in
Dancing to a tune they know so well.

The wailing of those tortured souls
Joins with the screaming of the un-dead
Werewolves victims join in now
Screaming as when dragged from bed.

The clacking of the bashing bones
As the skeletons wildly dance
The percussion section softened
As we see rotted corpses prance.

The vampires flamenco aloof
See o'er yonder where they are stood
Watching Dracula arms held aloft
As he stamps in a puddle of blood

The frenzy of the fiddler increases
Dancers crazily matching his tone.
For as every creature of night knows
That day can never be their home.

Then we hear it loud, a cockerel
Calling above the raucous din
And the creatures of evil curse it
For it banishes creatures of sin.

With light the creatures have vanished
Gone back to their hole or their pit
Slithering down the septic highways
Crawling to where only evil can fit.

We hear it still, high in the air
Death the fiddler fiddling away.
Knowing his work will be starting
At the end of another day.

Yesterdays Dreams

As I watch a leaf whilst sat under a tree
The wind is causing it to dance with glee
Pirouetting in the air like a ballet dancer
Possessed by the wind who’s a necromancer
Imagination given reign to an un-mystery
As I watch a leaf whilst sat under a tree.

As I watch a leaf whilst sat under a tree
Yesterdays dreams seem to blow from me
Tomorrows like the leaf are still up in the air
And yet now I’m free, no longer do I care
No longer do I worry about uncertainty
As I watch a leaf whilst sat under a tree.

Revelry

Come nimble friend and lend your hand
and free your rhythmic feet
we'll scuddle scoot on dampened sand
serge forward then retreat.
The moon sings sweetly o'er the spray
to spin the dull to dazzlin' gray
the moon sings sweet
the moon sings sweet
come take my hand, I'll lead the way.

Come nimble friend we'll trip the waves
and call the wind to cry
we'll howl our passion loud like knaves
and swing the stars to fly.
On moonbeam wings we'll shoot the blue
in midnight azure through and through
on moonbeam wings
on moonbeam wings
and dance our way to grand debut.

Come nimble friend to call me flame
and set this world ablaze
we'll steam the sea to mist and blame
our tango in the haze.
Enchanted moon our queen tonight
reflecting harmony's delight
enchanted moon
enchanted moon
transcending time in rhythmic rite.
