#17 Pushkin Sonnet

This form was described as a "mettlesome creature" and A.D.P Briggs in his introduction to Evgeny Onegin states that Pushkin invented a sonnet form which can go either way becoming Italian or English at the flick of a switch in mid stanza.

The Octave rhymes - a. b.a. b.....c.c. d.d.....

(Note) The first quatrain uses an alternating rhyme, and the second one, two couplets.

The sestet is where the change occurs and also expands the form. The original Pushkin sestet was either two tercets e.f.f.... e.g.g. and here you can see the Italian influence,
Sonnet #8

Although I wonder if it is worthwhile,
Because it may take up a lot of time,
A poem that is written in this style,
Becomes a sonnet with a Pushkin rhyme.
Can muses be aroused to help me out?
Can words be found that hold poetic clout?
Determined as I am to see this through,
Decisions that I make, may bother you.
Especially using words that fit between,
For finding starting letters limits me,
From using other words, to some degree.
Exactly how this ends will soon be seen,
Good lord, you say, you really do go on,
Go to bed, your fourteen lines are done.

Gloria Carpenter

alternatively the same rhyme is used, this time as an envelope quatrain with a couplet, e.f.f. e.....g.g. subtly different but you can see the English influence.
Piper at the Gates of Dawn

From the dawn of time he has played for us
The music has reached our minds and hearts
Telling his tales of wars won and joyous loves,
Most times of defeat and how lovers part.
But listen to him best at the break of dawn
Hear his spirits rise each time he greets the morn
See the angels gather round to hear him play
As the new sun rises from the sea at start of day.
See the angels fly, full of this heavenly sound
The piper moves on forever bound to seek
A place to rest, and stay, if only for a week
There is no peace, this place cannot be found.
So he moves on seeking with each fresh morn
And you can see the piper at the gates of dawn.

Ryter Roethicle

Which ever side you chose it really makes no difference as by presenting it in the correct sonnet form of 14 lines, neither argument is apparant. Perhaps this form can be considered as a truly neutral form and can follow the free syllable arguement, or the Iambic pentameter, whatever suits at the time.

Open Secret

Revelations made in parliament
Have caused chaos in our twin island state;
A veil of quasi-secrecy was rent
And we were told by our PM with great
Emotion, how it had been discovered
That phone lines were being tapped. This hovered
In that grand chamber like some dismal cloud,
As members reacted and spoke aloud.
The former PM then rose to his feet,
But was ordered unceremoniously
By the House Speaker, who impatiently
Asked him to hold his peace, to take his seat.
The ex PM complied, his features set,
One thing's for sure, this isn't over yet.

Diana the Huntress

Diana the huntress, Goddess of the moon
Nymph of woodland, where myths had strewn
Who hunted the forest with maidens fair
Drew bows and sent their arrows there;
Amidst brown bears and wild black boar
Thro` purity of virgins that shed not a tear
For they spared the life of the sacred deer
Within medieval times of Roman folklore;
A two sided Goddess half good half bad
Her changeable nature, she could not control
Arrogant and revengeful to a mortal soul
Yet forgiving, loving, towards happy and sad,
Huntress of beasts Goddess of the moon
Nymph of woodland, where myths had strewn.

Fear

My secret fear is a fear of drowning
Never in my youth was I taught to swim
I edge away from the sea shore frowning
With my chances of survival looking slim;
Oh why am I so afraid of the deep ocean
Why must I suffer this dreaded emotion
When the sea is peaceful and looking calm
And salts of the ocean then, a healing balm;
I pluck up every bit of courage that I dare
But my fearful mind knocks me back down
I am almost certainly destined to drown
In the depth of the ocean gasping for air
Why me, to subject to this fear and strife
Have I once drowned in a previous life ?

-----

Forgot to Remember

I nearly always forget to remember
Where I put things by that I have lost
My forgetful minds like a fading ember
Of those whose past memories exhaust;
I bought some nice shoes the other day
`Twas the shoes, not box, that I threw away
They cost me a fortune, it was a great sin
The refuse collector had emptied the bin;
If only my forgetful mind would behave
I climb upstairs to change all the beds
Forgot I was there and had slept instead
Sprayed the kitchen but flies I did save;
`Twas I who curled up with a tummy upset
How I wish I remembered not to forget.

-----

Heart of an Angel

On a broken down bridge they walk upon
With rapids and waterfalls raging below
They see no danger when they skip along
No fear or anxiety were they ever to know;
Whatever they do wherever they may be
The sense of danger they just cannot see
They seem contented and happy to play
Yet danger is never much distance away;
To explore in their World is all they crave
But an angels heart with her guiding hand
Who loves and protects and will understand
Shall be there in spirit their souls to save;
Two children exploring the wild country wide
With the heart of an angel close by their side.

-----

Lady to Knight

'Twas that you that came to my bed last night
I did waken to whispers of sweetest love
Within wildest dreams received with delight
I feared to awaken from dreams thereof;
'Were you really my knight in shining armour
Who came to my bed with noise and clamour,
With a bower of sweet roses still on the tree
And thorns of scorn constantly pricking me;
I doth ne-er forsake thee for thus I may vow
Come now dear knight upon thy rampant steed
Who hath ridden hard to reach thy great need
If 'tis love thou so desire come hitherto now;
Come stay now dear knight thy whispers I keep
Sweet dreams shalt return when e`re I sleep'.

-----

Loves Awakening

Oh youth sweetest youth wherefore art thy now
She who skipped merrily within golden fields
Devoid of deep furrowed lines upon thy brow
Cherishing this youth 'fore harsh winter yields,
Oh joyous days beneath a warm summer sky
Whence dreams of her lover embraces nigh;
Upon rippling waters his image she admires
Awakens her senses, for `tis she he inspires
Thy tender words with soft caresses sublime,
That doth melt an unsuspected young heart
For this courtship dance is a treasure of art
Which guideth thy dream towards love divine;
Oh joyous days beneath warm summer skies
A gentle breeze blows when softly she sighs.

-----

Medusa (Variant)

In ancient Greece their dwelt a lady fair
Who adorned beautiful locks of golden hair
Her great beauty then, spread thro` the land
But she ne-er obtained a gold wedded band;
King Neptune had charmed her chastity away
Within the great temple of Athena they lay
Athena angered how her temple was used
For chastity she believed had been abused;
She cast on Medusa this most wicked spell
Of demons and snakes within her tresses
In her envious plight for wanton caresses
But not a body would e`er survive to tell;
If admirers should glance at her face alone
Her curse would forever turn them to stone.

-----

Oceans of Love (Variant)

Oh come gently ye breeze from the ocean
Touching softly with waves of warm devotion
I feel the pulse of passion from the deep,
Where strong flowing currents ne-er sleep,
Oh come thee now lost spirits of the night
Feel again the warmth of thy lovers arm
To adore, cherish, keep thee, from harm,
Once more the sun shalt e-er shine bright
To awaken thus sincere hearts emotion
For I see in thine eyes sweet love divine
That promises true that you shalt be mine
Shalt thou not return from dark into light,
When the tidal surf flows in from the sea
Oh come thee my love return then to me.

-----

Pillow of Dreams

Oh how I dream of warm summer nights
When warmth of my love reigns supreme
Of sweet scented musk by candle lights
Upon a sensual pillow of sweet dreams;
I dream of my lover, who appears to me
Only he shall charm these passions free
For I see his smile and I hear him speak
I completely relax for defenses are weak;
My wild emotions are trapped in my mind
I wonder if maybe would he feel the same
To meet half way in the heat of this flame
And maybe within his heart he could find;
That love and lust shall be all what it seems
When he shares with me my pillow of dreams.

-----

Secret Doorway

Oh secret doorway whither do thy lead
Within a mystical forest clearing deep
Upon an oak grown from an acorn seed
Are there now faeries within fast asleep;
Not to awaken until bright morning dawn
To bathe in the dew and dance thereon
Or fly with birds over forest and field
Sharing a feast of wild berries to yield;
Of young elvin, druids and wizards inside
Casting spells of magical healing potions
Herbal salves, and wild elderberry lotions
Bearing all the goodness forests provide;
Oh secret door is it here where thy lead
The powers of herbs is thy secret indeed.

-----

Shades of Autumn

How lovely are those shades of Autumns scene
The artists ladened brush hath now revealed
Beauty through the seasons hath ever been
Thro` tranquil paths enfringing autumns field;
The ever changing leaves unto vibrant hues
Autumns shadows of reds and brown diffuse
Floating from dancing boughs as they flow
Whilst breaths of autumn winds gently blow;
Protective leaves descend on forest loam
`Fore morning dew doth kiss with frosted lips
When the touch of icy fingers cruelly grips
Glistening magic spreads on woodland home;
Hiding autumn shades `neath winters snow
Until once again in Spring a tree shalt grow.

-----

Some Day

Could I e-er forget this love so divine
When I now dream constantly of thy touch
Supping the sweet red sap from a vine
Oh how we had loved each other so much;
Tho` this parting doth bring sweet sorrow
Knowing there shalt always be tomorrow
Maketh this our passion groweth stronger
Days and months shall appear to be longer;
But patience then embraces a lovers heart
As the dew drops kiss the autumn ground
Then once again this love shalt be found
`Til winters ice and snow drifts them apart;
But lovers remain haunting thro`the night
Loving each other softly when time is right.

-----

Sonnet of Love (Variant)

I bequeath to thee this sonnet of love
For thou art my love I cherish thereof
The brightest shining stars high in the skies
Are shining for thee deep within mine eyes;
My love is for thee and so precious to me
Oh if only my lover thee were to be mine
The pulse of our hearts shalt beat in rhyme
Fantasies of honour doth show true and free;
How sweet are thy whispers within mine ear
When thou speaketh of thy affection so true
Oh my sweet love `tis why I so love thee too
And why when your sorrow`d I shed a tear;
For thou art my love I cherish thereof
I bequeath to thee this sonnet of love.

-----

Snowflake

When autumns leaves doth no longer blow
So pretty when autumns solstice lingers
While heavy clouds now promising snow
Cold is the frost which nips the fingers;
A perfect snowflake drifts from the sky
Shadings of white this winters butterfly
Mystical shapes that glisten as they fall
A fairyland enchantment sent to enthral;
And wonderland transformed once more
Gracing this seasons enchanted weather
Tiny crystals of snow that cling together
Covers deep the woodlands earthly floor;
Mother nature paints her wintry scene
As aged shadows shade her eyes serene.

-----

Tread Softly

Walk thou silently unto this dark night
Lest thy awaken the sleeping dead
Quench thy tallow`s flamed light
`Fore the flicker of flames spread;
Tread softly for thy art ne-er alone
Upon deepened earth and limestone
Where as this his epitaph was writ
Upon a tombstone of marbled grit;
Lay crumbling in this ancient cask
His thread bare shroud slowly rotten
A corpse who was never forgotten
No longer adorns his deathly mask;
His death now turns an ancient page
A fenced off relic of bygone age.

Wisteria Moon

To float on a lake in a green leafy boat
Under beams of a mystical new moon
On rippling waters sweet petals float
Shaded banks where wisterias bloom;
This heavenly scent filled the night air
Adrift on the lake a kiss they did share
Magical moments with mystical charms
Warmly enclosed in each others arms;
Deeply enchanted in love and in play
Mystical starlight doth shine in their eyes
An everlasting fantasy which never dies,
And this fantasy is never so far away;
Under the beams of a mystical moon
Upon shady banks where wisterias bloom.

Forever Free

Her eyes reflect the beginning and end
in charcoal pools that reach deep in the soul
it is on her mercy I now depend
for life is done; I go to her parole.
Her touch may send a shiver down my spine
her whisper leads me to her realms divine
in wings of darkest black I take my shade
as in her love through death I'll be remade.
Upon my knees as I begin to cry,
it is her voice that stills my raging mind
and her embrace that I long to find
as in my fear I ask her how and why.
I know now that she will never leave me
but in her love I am forever free.

The Devil in Me

I wish the hard years were behind me now,
For a long time I have abandoned dreams,
To plan and look ahead I will not allow
I have forsaken love, and romantic schemes.
And counted my many scars and wounds
Til finally gaving in to the bottles siren sounds.
With nights staring at bottles on a barroom wall
Days a sober blur trying to deafen the spirit call
Each time I succumb I am less and less a man
The devil inside hides but still fulfils my needs
And I sink further down as on my soul he feeds.
Somehow I need to grasp some kind of plan.
Something that will help rather than destroy me
I know I need a dream that only I can see.

-----

Dolorosa

If it is sorrow and pain you crave
I once had a bottle full of tears
Each time you said goodbye, I'd save,
A tear, until I had a sea of salty spheres.
But each dead heart drop that fell for you
Multiplied, and colonized, and grew
It had a life within of such intensity
And created a surf upon a tideless sea.
I took the bottle to the beach to pour
The life born of my sorrow in the bay.
I sat and watched and prayed that one day
The life in my tears will swim to you on shore.
Worlds of life survive where none appears
My life and love exists within a world of tears.

-----

Fond Memories (Variation)

Is it so long since we shared so much
Time rushes by yet there has not been a day
When I haven't missed you and your touch
And wanted to be with you in every way.
Music united us each and every night
Yet also was very much part of our living day
From the waking light and afternoons play
Till that final moment turned out the light.
Now there is no music because it causes pain
How I wish we could be lovers again
But too much has been said and pain digs deep
But tell me who you dream of when you sleep
Too much has been said to ease your pride
But what do you really feel deep inside?

-----

Masculinity Discovered

The night is dark and the sky is clear
As the springs night coldness settles in.
I drink a glass of wine and shed a tear
For now I have learned about emotion.
It took too long for lessons to be learned
As from signs of weakness away I turned.
Then I found my years of behaving male
Was simply keeping my mind in jail.
Now I allow my feelings to overwhelm me
As the music I'm playing is sad, and slow
I'm playing Albinoni's concerto for oboe
Tonight I shall keep my own company.
I know now that I am not a lesser man
For showing my emotions free when I can.

-----

New Found Love

Dawn's twilight mood is failing fast
Soon the morning sun will light the sky.
The avian choir will start to sing at last
Waking them up from where they lie.
Two lovers wake with sleep filled eyes
Still smiling from last nights revelries.
The day will be spent apart as is the norm
But come the night there will be a storm.
This is the time for experiment and play
Where two once strangers learn to be one
And an eternity together has begun
For newfound love was ever this way.
The morning sun smiles as lovers leave
Knowing they'll be back again this eve.

-----

Pictures in the Fire

Pictures in the fire on a winter's night
What do you see, what are your dreams?
Of woodland walks or soft flown streams
Of halcyon days and warm eve's night.
The fire grows steady, with a settled flame
Like middle life, which is just the same
And pictures change, with seasoned thought
Images, memories that experience has bought.
The fire settles now to a more reddish glow
Colours like blue and yellow are left behind
And a softer, more mellow image we find.
For memory changes the pictures we know
Like photo albums turned brown with age
The fire now reaches its final stage.

Politically Incorrect

Tha might be wundrin why I talk like this
When all't time I swear that I'm Australian
And not one skerrick of England do I miss
Or homesick and want to go back there again.
I'll tell thee this and I'll only tell tha once
I'm an Aussie and not some Pommy ponce.
I'm a working class lad an alus have been
And I was used by her and then forgotten.
In England there are still three classes
But Australia it's a vastly different place
They take you in and help regardless of race
And snotty types aren't told to kiss my asses.
This may seem to Yanks to be quite a farce
Instead we say to snotts go and kiss my arse.

-----

Question of Existence

I can only spend my life with you.
Gladly as souls we have Eternity,
And together what is a better view
Time when spent apart is purgatory.
Each night watching the setting sun
I know later you'll see the same one
I wish we could see it together
Even more that it would be forever.
The time will come when it is so
And the days then will fly so fast
We'd wish them slow to make them last.
But days like that, would we wish to know?
But in the end we will finally meet
And hand in hand walk down Heavens street

-----

Seasons Reflections

Shadows lengthen as the evening draws near
And nights icy fingers begin to search our souls
As shadows over sunlit roofs begin to crawl
Winters biting chill remains the force to fear.
Once again the garb of winter we must assume
Belying daytimes promise of a balmy night.
Lower temperatures slapping who dare presume
Winter will relinquish her hold without a fight.
But Winter also realises it is time for her to rest,
Her nightly freezing sojourns have lost their zest.
More temperate nights have become the norm,
With avians sounding out to greet the morn.
Around us, Flora begins her yearly fashion show
And for a while the plainest shrub will glow.

-----

Spring Rituals

It is the time for birds of every kind,
Hearken to them now as they rejoice.
Adapting to problems created by mankind,
Mating rituals begin, they make their choice.
Tis now the cyclist had best beware,
And his urban journeys taken with care.
For it is the time of black and white attack,
With winged strikes, when tur-ned back.
The Magpie is just one within the crowd.
Some birds are thieves and in building the nest,
Take what they desire and disregard the rest,
And on completion boast their crimes out loud.
No shame or morals hold back the feathered fiend
For when Nature rules, the means justify the end.

-----

Storm

Like any sailor caught at sea
In raging storm and mountain wave
Like a sea anchor thrown out by me
I face the storm with love you gave.
The storm rages and tries its best
Once again putting me to the test
But because of you I am complete
Being more than ready for any feat.
The sails are furled ship battened down
As nature unleashes all her might
Blackened sky hid by sea of white
Even hell throws in its own nightgown
I know in time this storm will die
And in the haven of you again I’ll lie.

-----

Too Much Spring

How can there be too much spring?
It's a time for love, and a time for growth
A time of newness, and hearing birds sing
Also a time when lovers pledge their troth.
But what does love promise in an early age
Youth cannot lay claim to ever being a sage.
Nor can age lay claim to wisdom about love
They should just give thanks to Heaven above
Is there too much love, or too much spring?
When love begins ever, the answer is no
But just like a race there is a time to slow
If you don't you could lose everything.
Then like Tortoise with a slow steady pace
Beat the speedy Hare and win the race.

-----

Truth

Look forth to truth and her naked breast
That has sucked dry, become an empty pap
And starved thus, should find naught to feast,
Then ignorance and blindness the senses sap.
Letting that blindness create its own truth
Building on falsehood like any naive youth
And parched ground soaks in these false tears,
Pushing forth, growth, coming strong with years.
What was truth, has become true no more
Witnesses attest the lies, believing what they say
And yet this truth is only fashioned for the day
Someday soon someone will open another door.
There a suckled child has teat that's full and round
And the tears of truth will fall on fertile ground.

Waiting for a star to fall (Variation)

The cosmos awaits us this starry night
Set in darkest blue and silver bright
And shooting stars streak across the sky
As the heavens call - to you - and I.
In love, bodies meld as was in ages past
And eyes are closed, but not from sleep
As rapture puts us in its mood so deep
Until that final moment, we wish to last.
That final moment is but physical release
It is the deeper feeling of souls we need
Simple togetherness is on what we feed.
Only in this way can there be pure peace
Laying in the night, listening to each call
And waiting for a star to fall.

-----

Welcome Spring

Welcome the precious buds of spring,
The winter wind doth blow no more.
Green is the colour of Natures floor,
We wait now to see what she will bring.
The final days of winter were blessed,
With cold and rain brought from the west,

And thankfully the drought has broke,
Thanks to August wearing her sodden cloak.
The mornings now cold, fresh and bright,
Bring warmer days and clear skies of blue.
Blessed dampened sprinkles in the night,
Hopefully signal the dryness's adieu.
Birds greet morning with freshened sounds,
Just see how everywhere new life abounds.

-----

Winter's Fire

I think of you in the cold winter's rain
Though the wind blows cold against my face
I draw my warmth from memories I retain
Of your sweet lips spreading their hot grace.
When trees are bowing sadly with the wind
And strangers huddle under coats too thin
I then recall passion's flame in your eyes
To feel the fever rising in my skin
I feel your body blaze beneath my hand
As southerly winds blow and spread their ill
I burn for you in theses times of chill
Let winter do the very worst it can
Through coldest nights I lie in flush desire
In dire need of you, my winter's fire.

-----

You

When you're lost from me for a while
I look inside my heart and you are there
Then as I look and I see your smile
I know that you are with me everywhere.
When you're lost from me because of space
And you and I are in a separate place
I close my eyes and look deep within
Then I see your eyes and smile and I grin.
When you're lost from me for a time
Know my heart is open, my body stressed
I am still aware that with you I’m blessed
As together we make that Eternal climb.
You will never ever be lost from me
For wherever is my heart, you will be.
