2008 Form Challenges
#1 Kyrielle

This was once a very popular French form and dates from the Middle Ages. It is written in quatrains (four lines of poetry) which includes a Refrain B, (A repeat line, phrase, or word), and as is normal with French poetry it is syllabic (in this case eight syllables, English - "Tetrameter") to make up a quatrain rhyming thus:
a. a. b. B..... c. c. b. B... etc
each quatrain finishing with the same line, phrase or word (Refrain). Here is a very enjoyable example by John Payne:
A Little Pain

A little pain, a little pleasure.
A little heaping up of treasure,
Then no more gazing upon the sun.
All things must end that have begun.

Where is the time for hope or doubt?
A puff of the wind and life is out:
A turn of the wheel and the rest is won.
All things must end that have begun.

Golden mornings and purple night,
Life that fails with the failing light:
Death is the only deathless one.
All things must end that have begun.

John Payne

In the example above, it will be noticed that a rhyme pattern was established where couplets were used.
As an alternative however, a rhyme may be used using alternate line rhyme and so would end up with a pattern of:
a. b. a. B...... c. b. c. B.
Constructing this poem the poet has quite a choice, and another alternative is for the second OR third line not rhyme at all, then it ends up with:
a. X. a. B.....or.... a. b. X. B.

Amphibian a Go Go

Iím an action amphibian,
Can go as fast as any man,
Hells Angels have nothing on me,
I ride the highways wild and free.

You ought to see me do a stunt,
Please forgive me if I am blunt,
I do an excellent wheelie;
I ride the highways wild and free.

Sometimes I wear leather and chains,
Other times I donít take the pains,
No laws against my nudity,
I ride the highways wild and free.

I am well known both near and far,
In my own right I am a star,
Just ask anyone about ďOui,Ē
I ride the highways wild and free.

Fiona the Frog

Iím Fiona a modern frog
I have my own website and blog,
My pretty smile, Iíd like to share,
Canít help it that Iím gorgeous dear!

Iím not on any ego trip,
But when I watch myself I flip,
And then I smile from ear to earÖ
Canít help it that Iím gorgeous dear!

And though some dare to call me fat,
A matter of opinion that;
My beau says Iím perfect, so there!
Canít help it that Iím gorgeous dear!

I take this opportunity
To send greetings to you from me,
Ribbit to all my friends out there,
Canít help it that Iím gorgeous dear!

Sad News

This year had started very well,
Good things were in store I could tell
And then I got the news today,
An old Ďnetí friend has passed away.

Weíd met on line at Poems Place,
I never saw him face to face,
But it really hurts me to say,
An old Ďnetí friend has passed away.

A pro at cowboy poetry
A favírite with everybody,
Rest in peace Rod is what I pray:
An old Ďnetí friend has passed away.

In Winter's Garden

In winter I waltz with my rake
It leads me and I let it take
Control of my emotions
As I succumb to its potion

We glide across the sleeping ground
Twirling and circling all around
We dare to make a commotion
As I succumb to its potion

There's magical music we hear
It only plays this time of year
For gardeners with devotion
As I succumb to its potion

Souls Ease

At Peace

Another day is done at last,
each day now seems to go so fast...
For now, my dues have all been paid,
at peace, I watch the sunset fade.

Contented with my earthly lot,
I settle in my favoured spot
and watch the light play in the glade,
at peace, I. Watch the sunset fade.

in hues of red and gold, it flows
across the shrubs, the tall dog-rose,
illuminates each leaf and blade;
at peace, I watch. The sunset fade.

deprives the world of warmth and light,
and yet the scene is etched so bright
within my mind, it is displayed...
At peace, I watch the sunset fade.

-----

Moonlight Seranade

I gaze across the silent Earth,
watching the moment of rebirth.
A woman walks into the glade,
I hear the moonlight serenade.

Her skin is silvered by the light;
beneath, her passions will ignite.
Upon the ground sheís now arrayed;
I hear the moonlight serenade.

She gives herself up readily
to Luna, shining steadily,
and as her form begins to fade
I hear the moonlight serenade.

-----

Spring Enduring

So slow and subtle, yet never still,
almost as cold as the death it cheats,
bound to a purpose, an iron will,
beneath the ground, a proud heart still beats.

Hidden so deep from the winter cold,
waiting with patience Ďtil chill retreats.
Sentience born when the world was old,
beneath the ground, a proud heart still beats.

Strength found in beauty, and all thatís good,
never dismayed by its dark defeats,
vigour that lives on in stone and wood,
beneath the ground, a proud heart still beats.

Earth holdís its breath as the sleeper wakes,
heralds of green so restrained, discreet,
marking the birth of the Spring, that waits
beneath the ground, a proud heart still beats.

The Storyteller

You touch me with the tales you tell
of love and lovers matched so well.
I feel their strength; they keep me warm,
with silken words you clothe my form.

On journeys to the farthest stars
my mind explores, there are no bars
to hold me back, I'll ride the storm,
with silken words. You clothe my form

so delicate, the ones you use
the perfect one you always choose,
unlike my mind, in helpless swarm
with silken words, you clothe my form.

And so my mind will feed on yours,
I'll follow you where eagle soars!
Adventures always are the norm,
with silken words, you clothe my form.

My eyes are heavy, time to sleep,
yet I will never cry or weep,
for even dreams you can transform!
With silken words, you clothe my form.

Beautiful Woman

When I walk my fat thighs jiggle
and my bum, oh my!, does wiggle;
it does not matter Iím not slim,
I am a beautiful woman.

Sometimes a lady, circumspect,
insist on treatment with respect;
for even when my hairís undone,
I am a beautiful woman.

A load of smarts, Iím funny too;
I can hammer though prefer to screw;
can hold my own against any man,
I am a beautiful woman.

My eyes, theyíll glow with raw desire,
my body burn with passionís fire,
hot and sexy when Iíve a whim,
I am a beautiful woman.

Thankful for these gifts received,
care about those with less than me,
generous, loving, do what I can,
I am a beautiful woman.

My soul has been described as old,
within my breast beats heart of gold,
I am secure with who I am,
I am a beautiful woman.

Days Pass By

I fear to laugh and so to weep
The scars I wear are old and deep
Live on I must, at least to try
I do my best as days pass by.

Fate treats me ill, she is not kind
Promised me once then changed her mind
Warm heart turns cold as questions why
I do my best as days pass by.

We loved, he left then came once more
Impatient, wait for rap on door
That will not come for all I cry
I do my best as days pass by.

News here at last I hoped might come
But words aren't right, seems Fate has won
Her victor's spoils I can't deny
I did my best as days passed by.

Too weary for another test
I swallow sleep's eternal rest
My love my love my love I sigh
Into death's mist and days pass by.

Know Not What To Do

Into dreams, unbidden, you come;
Stars shine bright; a sliver, the moon.
Across the miles two become one-
Oh, love, I know not what to do.

Alone was my way, all my life;
Never knew love 'til I found you.
Now I see me as loving Wife-
Oh, love, I know not what to do.

Am I reading between the lines?
Oh God I'd feel like such a Fool.
Yet we're so much alike, one mind-
Oh, love, I know not what to do.

Had nothing to give, nor knew how;
Lived my life with nary a clue.
I see the truth, obvious now-
Oh, love, I know not what to do.

Icy shroud has begun to melt;
Cupid's arrow has pierced me through.
The pain orgasmically heartfelt-
Oh, love, I know not what to do.

Never felt such wonder before;
My fragile heart is pure and true.
Insatiable now, I want more-
Oh, God, I know not what to do.

Desirous Dreams

Go to sleep in the arms of night
Close your eyes drift away tonight
Obtaining dreams you desire
in love and life you admire

Sleep well cover up from the cold
And relax to a deep sleep hold
whispers of cold winds inspire
in love and life you admire

Loving thoughts bring satisfied dreams
a new you seen with self-esteem
Fluffy soft clouds to retire
in love and life you admire

alone in darkness of the room
Where all dreams perceive futures groom
dreams drift by in dreams required
in love and life you admire

The chills have left and warmth sets in
As the sunshine glows deep within
Sporadic calms you've acquired
in love and life you admire.

Happiness

We realized we want happiness
Like a lighting bolt it hit hard
Realized how vital, we confess
this puzzling word we now need

weve drifted away and found stress
A part of life planted with speed
A puzzle piece thats been missing
this puzzling word we now need

We search everywhere for progress
In faces, on land, in the skies
Why have we not possessed
this puzzling word we now need

A gemstone of life to express
Easy to say we did concede
Lets step into happier times
this puzzling word we now need

-----

Special Bard Part I

Someone special entered the door
He entered into my hearts shore
A unique friend who felt my strife
A Bard has touched my puzzled life

A one of a kind special friend
To help mend puzzles of loose ends
A friend of comfort through lifeís rife
A Bard has touched my puzzled life

A Bard who puts smiles galore
When pieces of puzzles were sore
A special friend who lights my life
A Bard has touched my puzzled life

Part II

Yes, my Bard has felt my sadness
Heís been there for me when needed
At trying times of loneliness
Easing crying with laughterís seed

Heís lent an ear in bitterness
Heís been there to celebrate deeds
Through the good creeds, through the badness
Easing crying with laughterís seed

Youíre the missing piece of progress
my Bard, a special caring breed
I value what youíve done for us
Easing crying with laughterís seed

Together Love Grows

A beautiful relaxing flow
Of soft warm whispered expressions
Our love fills each pathway we go
Lighting ways of our procession

Warmth seeps in our hearts desires
interlocking expectations
A peaceful place we admire
Lighting ways of our procession

In sunshine, in moonlight we grow
A strong relationship that glows
Through life we create destinations
Lighting ways of our procession

Broken Wing

I found a bird with a broken wing
Each morning I had heard her sing
Then I heard her song no more
She was lying broken on the floor

Her lovely song silenced by pain
Would she ever sing again
Anchored by pain, dying to soar
I found her broken on the floor

I loved and cared and again she flew
And as she soars her song is new
To greater heights now sheíll soar
No longer broken on the floor

-----

Cycles

We travel through our lives
Each day we leave our mark or brand
Like truck wheels on the virgin plains
Or footprints in the fresh beach sand

The wind will always raise the grass
Each new tide will refresh the strand
Then we will come with another pass
Or footprints in the fresh beach sand

The fields we have planted today
Will ripen slowly and expand
Each harvest simply man at play
Like footprints in the fresh beach sand

So the seasons wax and wane
Then once more we become the land
So the cycle begins again
Like footprints in the fresh beach sand

-----

Dichotomy

Because of fate we must live apart
Seizing each moment of each day
Knowing now what is in my heart
Fate has said it must be this way.

Tempering souls whilst separate
With other souls we stop and play
Because of fate we must live apart
Fate has said it must be this way.

Drawing strength, learning the art
Treating life as if we are in a play
Or what is on the muses chart
Fate has said it must be this way.

-----

Evensong

The beach sand has such memories
Not just the days activities,
But lovers walking by moonlight
You and I on this starry night.

Holding hands as we tread the sand
And talk of things as yet unplanned
Where feelings grow without the light
You and I on this starry night.

Stop and savour the evening breeze
Love words echoed from nearby trees
As slowly restrained passions ignite
You and I on this starry night.

Night birds echoes the lovers cries
Night wind echoes with its sighs
Lovers lie entwined in delight
You and I on this starry night.

-----

Heart of Stone

Every night I cut out my heart
Making promises to you alone.
In the morning its full again
Bouncing back from your heart of stone.

What can I say, what can I do?
I though you knew, I thought Id shown
My beliefs, how I had been hurt
Bouncing back from your heart of stone.

Am I a fool to carry on?
Laughing!! Common sense must have flown
Out the door on meeting you, then
Bouncing back from your heart of stone.

But no, stupidity is not rare
And like love a capricious bone,
That any dog will toss and catch
Bouncing back from your heart of stone.

-----

Just Below

Sit on the beach with me tonight
On the warm sands neath starry skies
And I will kiss thee in moonlight
Just below where Capricorn lies.

The stars will smile, but what is new
What they see tonight is no surprise
For this has always been their view
Just below where Capricorn lies.

Young loves, old loves have made it so.
Love does not recognise ages prize
It exists where they choose to go
Just below where Capricorn lies.

But you and I have met again
And love to us is no surprise
Perhaps sounding an old refrain
Just below where Capricorn lies.

-----

Just One Look

Would that smile invite a single kiss
Even more with just one single touch?
Nay much moreís offered with all this
One single glance betrays so much.

The dimpled cheeks, the flashing eyes
The reddened face and sudden clutch,
That now coy look could not disguise
One single glance betrays so much.

Former barriers have been torn down
Now with passion you like to brush
And fashions now a flimsy gown
One single glance betrays so much.

-----

A Sailors Death

And only the sea shall know them
The ocean depth will be their grave
The wind will tug the wet shrouds hem
Like farewell flags, the waters wave.

There is no church with bells to ring
No flowers cover the hallowed site
Nor choir with caring hymns to sing
Like farewell flags, the waters wave.

Neptune has claimed them all
And to his bosom they are gone
Till Armageddon makes the final call
Then welcome flags, the waters wave.

-----

Sands of Time

Gone are the care-free days of youth
Gone are the days when word was proof.
Once gentle age, no more sublime
Washed away by sands of time.

You not Fate chose where to go
Angels only advised, yes or no.
Watching the roads you chose to climb
Washed away by sands of time.

Some are born with a silver spoon
Others perish before its noon
Each life another pantomime
Washed away by sands of time.

-----

Sweet Thunder

Oh such sweet thunder as we kiss
My heart pounding, loudly thumping
Our lips meet in heavenly bliss
My heart beating, wildly beating.

So closely pressing against me
Feeling your heart madly pulsing
We are overcome with the heat
My heart beating, wildly beating.

Oh the thunder as we unite
Madly beating, bodies thrusting
Breath gasping locked in loves old rite
My heart beating, wildly beating.

Such sweet thunder, still united
Vowing love, just lightly stroking
From passion we have descended
My heart beating, wildly beating.

Clarity

I was never much of a sage,
But know so well at this my age
As through my memories I drift,
Clarity of thought is a gift.

Though through troubled waters I swam,
Itís good to know I wasÖI am
Just knowing this is quite a lift
Clarity of thought is a gift.

Steeped in the knowledge my life is
Not mine at allÖfor it is His,
As through remembrances I sift
Clarity of thought is a gift.
